Five Steps to Dressing Your Naked Resume With the Perfect Cover Letter

Did you wear clothes to your last job interview? Silly question, right? As unthinkable as it would be to arrive nude to an interview, you are essentially committing the same faux pas when you send your resume to a potential employer unaccompanied by a well-written cover letter.

Three Indisputable Truths About Cover Letters

Whether we’re talking about a cover letter or your best interview suit, three indisputable truths apply.

First, like a good interview suit, a cover letter is essential. At some point in your life before you embarked on your career, a wise person advised you to purchase a quality business suit. And you did just that. Somewhere in your closet hangs the black, navy blue, or gray suit you’ve reserved for your interviews. No employer needs to tell a rational candidate that professional dress is expected for the interview. Even in creative industries, it is understood that the candidate should wear a business suit, although more latitude is given for color and style choices than in traditionally conservative fields. Similarly, unless the job announcement indicates otherwise, a potential employer expects that the applicant will provide a cover letter. Although the announcement may not explicitly state that a cover letter is preferred, it is always good practice to include one if for no other reason than to demonstrate how effectively you can communicate your ideas and thoughts in writing.

Second, a cover letter complements your resume. One goal of any interview is to project a confident demeanor and a polished appearance. In preparation for your interview, you’ll have your suit dry cleaned, the hems mended, and any loose buttons secured. You may also starch your shirt or blouse and polish your shoes. To complete your ensemble you’ll carefully select the perfect accessory, perhaps a gold watch, pearl necklace, or leather attache´. Just as the right accent piece can enhance your interview attire, so, too, can a well-written cover letter add to the attractiveness of your resume. When you lay out your wardrobe for your upcoming interview, you would not plan to wear two shirts, two suit jackets, and two pair of pants. Likewise, your cover letter should not merely be a duplication of the information included in your resume. Think of your cover letter as the finishing brushstrokes on a painting masterpiece.

Third, a cover letter is tailored. Your interview suit is tailored to fit you perfectly. The pants are neither too short nor are the jacket sleeves too long. You could lend your suit to a friend, but it wouldn’t look nearly as wonderful on him or her because it has been tailored for you. In like manner, the most effective cover letters don’t read as though they could fit any and every position. Instead, they are individualized to fit the specific position for which the applicant is applying. In other words, if you are submitting your resume for ten different positions, you need to write ten different cover letters. Nothing signals a questionable work ethic more to a potential employer than receiving a generic, cookie cutter cover letter where it appears the applicant did little more than change the date and cut and paste the addressee’s contact information.

The COVER Formula to Writing a Cover Letter

Writing the perfect cover letter doesn’t have to be an ordeal. In fact, it can be as easy as spelling C-O-V-E-R. COVER is an acronym for a five-step paragraph-by-paragraph approach you can use to write an effective cover letter. Over the next few pages, I will show you how you can use the COVER formula and the announcement for the position for which you are applying as a handy guide to craft the perfect complement to your resume.

To illustrate how this works, we’ll use an actual job announcement that was recently posted on a popular online job site. The entry level position was for a human resources assistant at an Atlanta consulting company that, for purposes of this article, we’ll refer to as ABC Consulting. Assume you’ve read the job announcement and wish to apply for the position. Your resume is ready. Now, let’s write the cover letter!

Step One: Cultivate a CONNECTION in the first paragraph. The C in the COVER formula stands for connection. Step one in creating the perfect cover letter is to establish a connection in the first paragraph. When you are introduced to someone, you engage in conversation to get to know the person better and discover what the two of you have in common. The same principle holds true when cultivating an authentic connection with a potential employer.

To build a connection with an employer, you need to conduct what I call intelligence. Intelligence is conducted on three distinct levels: (1) the company or organization at which you would be working; (2) the specific department or division in which you would be working; and (3) the individual(s) for whom you would be working. Doing your homework on a prospective employer serves a dual purpose. First, educating yourself about a company will help you better assess if the company’s mission, values, and culture are compatible with your own goals and working style. Second, if you decide there is a good fit, the person reading your cover letter or sitting across the desk from you during the interview will be impressed that you took the initiatve to investigate the company for which you aspire to work. I suggest creating a file (as simple as a manila folder) for each company you research where you can organize your notes, store your printouts, and save your correspondence. This way all your vital information will be in one place for quick reference and easy retrieval later.

Let’s return to the sample job announcement posted by ABC Consulting. Here is the basic job description for the position:

“ABC Consulting located in downtown Atlanta, GA is currently seeking a professional, bright, savvy, and hard working Human Resource Assistant for our corporate office. If you are a bright individual who is seeking to work in the HR field in a great entry-level position and likes to work in a fast-paced environment, this could be the experience for you!!”

The first crucial piece of information in the job description we are given is the name of the hiring company. Armed with that information, your initial step is to visit the official corporate website. Pay particular attention to those pages detailing the company’s philosophy, culture, core values, vision, and mission statement. While there, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with the company’s history and the names of its officers or executive board members. I also suggest that you visit the media page to read recent press releases. This is an excellent resource to learn about any community service initiatives with which the company may be involved. After you review the company’s website, head over to its Twitter or Facebook pages to continue your research. Thanks to the fluid nature of social networking, you can find the most current news events there. The final front of research on the company level can be conducted using internet search engines such as Google and Bing.

The second level of intelligence you’ll need to conduct is on the department level. While on the corporate website, look for a link for the department where you would be working. There you may find a personnel directory, an explanation of newly instituted programs, links to online newsletters, and other valuable information.

The third level of intelligence is on the individual level. If the job announcement lists the name of the person to whom you would report, or if you can find this information out, check to see whether the person’s biographical details are included on the company’s official website. You’ll also want to check whether the person maintains a profile on social networking outlets such as LinkedIn and Facebook. Bear in mind that your ultimate goal is to discover what things you have in common with your potential boss. For example, you may be alumni of the same college, belong to the same professional group or club, or share a unique hobby or interest.

After you have completed and compiled your research, give some thought about how you can incorporate one aspect of what you learned into the first paragraph of your cover letter to cultivate a connection.

For instance, suppose that your research revealed that ABC Consulting’s employees helped construct a Habitat for Humanity house last month. If you are a regular volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, you can make a connection with the company by explaining your personal commitment to working with Habitat on previous projects and expressing the enthusiasm with which you look forward to working with the company on its future projects.

If you conducted research on the human resources department and learned that it would be launching a software program for the first time next month and you have used that program successfully in a previous position, you can use this commonality as a basis for a connection:

“Please accept this cover letter and the enclosed resume in application for the Human Resources Assistant position with your company. I had an opportunity to visit your official website. I understand from reading the December 2009 newsletter that the human resources department plans to transition from its current software system to the PeopleSoft system in March. In my previous position, I helped train 10 people in my department on how to use PeopleSoft.”

Through your research on the individual level, you may have learned that person for whom you would be working graduated from your alma mater’s arch rival. If you were composing a cover letter to that person, your first paragraph might include the following connection:

“I read in your online biography that you are actively involved in the University of Alabama’s Alumni Association – Atlanta Chapter. I can assure you that this Florida Gator harbors no ill feelings about last year’s SEC Championship Game.”

Cultivating a connection is all about beginning to form a relationship. People want to work with other people they like and with whom they share similar interests and values. It follows that if you can cultivate an authentic connection in your cover letter and you have the requisite skills the employer is seeking, there’s a much greater likelihood you’ll be called in for an interview.

Step Two: Give a brief OVERVIEW of who you are in the second paragraph. The O in the COVER formula stands for overview. While your resume gives great insight into what you have done, it is equally important to devote a few sentences in your cover letter to describe who you are. Ideally the connection you made in the first paragraph was enough to encourage the person reading your cover letter to read further. Now you must seize the moment to heighten that connection in your second paragraph.

One way to do this is to elaborate on your personal brand statement, if you included one on your resume. In my article entitled Is It Time to Rethink Your Resume’s M.O.?, I wrote about the importance of including a powerful brand statement on your resume. An effective brand statement weaves your key strengths into tangible benefits you can provide a prospective employer. You can use the overview section of your cover letter to explain some aspect of your brand statement in more depth. Another option is to explain why you chose to pursue a particular career path. Perhaps you are passionate about promoting green issues, advocating for children with special needs, or writing advertising copy. Infuse the enthusiasm you have for pursuing your professional passion into your cover letter to show a potential employer you will bring that same degree of dedication to the position.

Step Three: VOICE your interest in the position in the second paragraph. The V in the COVER formula stands for voice. In the first two or three sentences of the second paragraph, you told the person reading your cover letter more about who you are. In the next few sentences, you want to connect who you are with why you are interested in the position. Consider what prompted you to respond to the job announcement or explain how you felt when you learned about the job opening. Incorporate some of the intelligence you conducted under Step One to list two or three strong reasons why you want to work for this particular employer.

Returning to the ABC Consulting job announcement, here’s an example of how our cover letter looks so far, including the second paragraph:

“Please accept this cover letter and enclosed resume in application for the Human Resources Assistant position with your company. I had an opportunity to visit your official website. I understand from reading the December 2009 newsletter that the human resources department plans to transition from its current software system to the PeopleSoft system in March. In my previous position, I helped train 10 people in my department on how to use PeopleSoft.

Up until five years ago, I ran a small internet-based business from my home. A chance encounter at a friend’s dinner party changed my career path forever. It was there where a mutual friend introduced me to Jane Doe, then-Chair of the Board for the Society for Human Resource Management – Atlanta. Our conversation ignited a longstanding desire to work in the human resources field. I was excited to learn of this opening with ABC Consulting because of its ongoing partnership with local area charities including the Atlanta Community Food Bank, where I have been a volunteer for the past ten years. I was also impressed to read on your corporate blog that ABC Consulting has been named one of the Best Places to Work in Atlanta for a third consecutive year.”

Step Four: Include specific EXAMPLES of your experience and skills in the third and fourth paragraphs. The E in the COVER formula stands for examples. In the previous two paragraphs, you cultivated a connection with your potential employer and explained why you wanted to work for the company. Over the next two paragraphs, you need to make your sales pitch, explaining the concrete value you can provide the employer. The cues provided in the job announcement are the blueprint for your sales pitch. Most job announcements include a description of the position’s duties, essential functions, required and preferred education, work experience, skills, and abilities, or any combination of these. This is where we’ll start.

To understand how to approach your sales pitch, let’s return to our hypothetical Human Resources Assistant position at ABC Consulting. The expanded job description appears below:

“HR Assistant performs a wide range of personnel duties within the procedural framework set forth by the Human Resource Department. Assists in the hiring and termination process, the company’s recruiting and orientation programs. Compiles, keeps and maintains all aspects of the company’s personnel records. Supervisory reports on disability, and date and reason for termination. Compiles various HR Reports. Oversees HR recognition programs, files employment records, searches employee files and furnishes information to authorized persons as requested. Oversees Payroll function adhering to payroll guidelines, acts as liaison between HR department, its managers and PEO as necessary.”

Additionally, the announcement listed 19 essential functions. I’ve listed the first five below:

1. Conduct New Hire Orientation; explain company personnel policies, benefits, and procedures to employees or job applicants.2. Examine employee files regularly to respond to state and federal compliance requirements on behalf of company. Responds to managerial and state inquiries providing information for personnel actions. 3. Answer questions regarding examinations, eligibility, salaries, benefits, and other pertinent information. 4. Process, verify, and maintain documentation relating to personnel activities such as staffing, recruitment, training, unemployment claims and appeals working with outside vendor by supplying information timely. Upkeep of company job descriptions, assists in comp studies as requested. Maintain performance evaluations and classifications. 5. Gather personnel records from other departments or employees.

Job duties and functions are generally listed in order of importance. In applying for a position, endeavor to address the first three duties and functions in your cover letter. If your experience doesn’t match the top three, descend the list chronologically until you identify three. Using the keywords and phrases in the job announcement, provide quantifiable and specific examples of your work experiences. For instance, in applying for the Human Resources Assistant position, you might detail in this paragraph your experience conducting new employee orientation, maintaining personnel records, and answering employees’ HR-related questions. Here’s an example of how the third paragraph in your cover letter to ABC Consulting might read:

“In my present role at XYZ Company, I am intimately involved in every phase of our employees’ life cycle. I assist in the hiring process, including coordinating career fairs, creating job advertisements, screening resumes, and preparing offer letters. I conduct a two-day orientation and on boarding program to familiarize new hires with company benefits, policies, and procedures. I also maintain accurate payroll and personnel records for the 125 employees in our office. During a typical day, I interface with employees, all management levels, and outside agencies, as authorized, to answer personnel questions and furnish requested information.”

The ABC Consulting job announcement also listed numerous preferred skills and attributes a candidate should possess. These included active listening, speaking, time management, critical thinking, writing, and proficiency with Microsoft Office products and HRIS software. In paragraph four of your cover letter, you would describe particular instances when you used two or three of these preferred skills. More importantly, though, you should be able to articulate how you will use these skills to make a valuable contribution to your potential employer. Here’s an example of how the fourth paragraph in your cover letter might read:

“If extended an offer to join your company, I am prepared to make an immediate contribution in three ways. First, I have used the PeopleSoft software program for two years and have a high degree of proficiency. As ABC Consulting will be transitioning to this software in March, I can assist in training your employees on the system. Second, because I am comfortable speaking in front of any size group, I will be able to represent your company effectively in offsite recruiting events and succinctly convey information during new hire orientation. Last, my current position involves working on several projects at one time and generating reports under strict time deadlines. These tasks have enabled me to sharpen the kind of time management and prioritization skills that will be an asset to your company.”

Step Five: REQUEST an interview in the fifth paragraph. The R in the COVER formula stands for request. In the previous paragraphs, you made your sales pitch by giving specific examples of your relevant work experience and skills. In the final paragraph of your cover letter, it’s time to close the sale by requesting an interview. First, you’ll want to state how and when you will follow up with the person to whom you are writing to arrange an interview. Second, provide your own contact information in case the addressee is so impressed by your resume and cover letter he or she wants to call you first to arrange an interview. Last, by all means, you should thank the person who read your cover letter for his/her time and consideration. Here’s an example of how the final paragraph in your cover letter to ABC Consulting might read:

“I look forward to speaking with you in greater detail about how I can benefit ABC Consulting. I will follow up with you by phone in a few days to arrange an interview. Or, you can reach me at (555) 555-5555. Thank you for your time and consideration.”

Now, let’s see how each of the elements in the COVER formula come together…

How to Increase Your Fishkeeping Fun

Are you really getting the full amount of enjoyment out of your fish?, Or are you hindered by small worries and anxieties?

Do you sometimes worry about spending too much time with your fish? I often hear people say that even though they enjoy their hobbies, the caregiving tasks involved get in the way of the fun.

In this month’s article we will explore how we can increase our happiness by taking a different approach to those common things that are very important if we want to keep our fish in top condition.

Make a plan

When you find time to spend with your hobby do you go through a kind of mental conflict wondering what to do?… and by the time you decide to make a decision, half of your time is already gone.

WELL…you are not alone, many aquarists have the same problem. BUT … it is possible to overcome this problem, to double your enjoyment of fish keeping. HOW? Well, certainly not by adding more tanks or spending more time on your hobbies… the answer lies in a change of mind, a change of approach.

Have you ever noticed that some people always seem to be on top of their work?, their fish rooms and tanks are always clean? always seem to have a lot of time to enjoy their hobby? Yet others never have a moment to live, they always seem to have so much to do and yet nothing seems to get done. The most important ingredient in our formula for increased fishing pleasure is planning.

Most of us lead busy lives, holding a full-time job, and taking care of family obligations etc. Without a plan it is very easy to put off our fish keeping activities until one day when life is less busy. Unfortunately, many times life doesn’t stay busy and our maintenance activities grow until our tank(s) get dirty and our fish begin to suffer.

This is when the pressure starts to build.

Involve the family

This can be even more difficult when your partner does not share your love and passion for entertainment. It is natural that they will have more important things in your time than you and if harmony is to be maintained then some sort of agreement must be reached. Having a plan that includes both family needs and your recreational needs goes a long way in ensuring that everyone’s needs are met. The biggest obstacle to overcome in any hobby is distraction. It is very tempting when we have time to spend with our fish to spend that time on unimportant things or even praising our fish.

Now don’t get me wrong… I’m not suggesting we don’t take the time to admire our fish, after all that’s the reason we started keeping fish in the first place. What I am suggesting is that there are good times to sit and love our fish. We can benefit from time spent on vacation with the family, for example.

What I am saying is that in those precious moments where we can devote some time to maintenance, we should focus on maintenance activities only. The most important ingredient in making the most of our precious time is one of mental focus and organization. Thinking clearly about your fish is the key to getting the most out of it. No matter what your hobby or interest is, there can be no joy in it if it causes anxiety and depression. Your entertainment will only be fun if it brings you satisfaction and relaxation.

Be reasonable

Ask yourself… is your thinking clear about keeping fish? Maybe when you have time one evening get a pencil and paper and write a few notes along these lines. Have you ever thought about how much time and money you can afford to spend on your hobbies? Think about it and write it down. You might think, for example, …I can work 2 evenings a week, 3 hours each evening and 5 hours every Saturday. ……I can spend £10 a month or £20 a month. Be as specific as you can even though changes may need to be made at any given week. The key is to have a clear idea of ​​the time and financial commitment. These will be different for every aquarist, of course. The important thing is that they are commitments that you feel comfortable with.

One of the common traps most of us fall into is letting our entertainment get out of hand. We get involved in keeping fish, perhaps by visiting a garden center, pet store or through a friend and setting up a tank in the living room. Soon the bug takes hold and we bring in another tank, then another and before we know it, we find we can’t cope with water changes and glass cleaning etc. !

One of the temporary measures we may need to consider is to close one or more tanks, perhaps as a temporary measure until we are better organized.

Next…

The next step is to set a specific goal for yourself and your fish keeping. This doesn’t have to be immediate but it should be clear.

“Keeping and breeding all kinds of fish” is probably the dream of many farmers but there is no clear goal. When setting your specific goal, save your time and money. The great thing about keeping fish is the wide range of goals you can pursue. If you are a fish breeder for example, you can specialize in one fish and set a breeding program goal. If you are not a breeder but enjoy collecting you can try collecting all species within a breed. Whatever your passion is, make sure you narrow it down to a specific goal, one that works for your time and financial goals. It can be “Collect as many species of Dwarf Cichlids as possible”, “Develop a species of albino Discus” or set up a tank housing only species from a certain geographical area – a Madagascar tank for example.

After you have made a decision… think about your first step in achieving this goal. This is your short-term goal, something that will be achieved in the near future.”Find a good source of young cichlids and buy one pair” or “Keep adult discus alive for x months”.

Think about it but write it down and remember your previous decisions at all times.

Ok, Next step…

With your new goal in mind, go and check your setup. Ask yourself – “does everything in my current setup contribute to my short-term goal?” The answer will definitely be NO. There will be problems and endings of fish and equipment that have nothing to do with your purpose. NOW comes the hard part….Everything that does not contribute to your goal must be sold or sold and the proceeds put toward your goal. When you achieve this you may find that you have multiplied your tank space without buying a single tank!!….

Make a list of priorities

Most aquarists have routine tasks that they do over and over again. Daily activities. Yet we spend a lot of time deciding what to do, often every day. I’m sure many of you can relate to the situation;

You come home from work, take care of the priorities quickly, sit down to dinner, finish at 7.00 pm. Maybe now you have 2 hours to spend with your fish. So now you’re in the process of deciding what to do tonight. We can lose 15 precious minutes every time we pause to decide what to do next.

How can we overcome this? As we noted above most aquarists have regular jobs and a few special ones. Keeping our short-term goals in mind, write each task on a separate piece of card.

For example a fish farmer may list the following 7 items:

Feed the fish

Expand the settings

Cut the small fish and put them in the big tank

Clean the filters

Establish new breeding pairs

Look for disease; handle any object seen

Look at the water; change if necessary

This is not an exhaustive list, of course, you will end up with a longer one but 7 things will serve as our example of how to set priorities.

Now look at the list and rearrange things like this: Any disease can spread quickly and if left untreated can wipe out your entire tank – it only takes a minute.

Make a demonstration of unusual behavior … hanging on corners … stuck wings … tearing etc

So No.1 on our list is:-1. Look for disease

Check out the rest of the list. What should you do next? Feed the fish? Well…maybe…but can you put food in the tank that covers us??

No, so it is better to check the water and if there are clouds, change the water.

So No2 on our list is:-2. Check the water – change if necessary

You may ask, can you change the water before cleaning/changing the filters? Yes, I would. It is important to remove dissolved solids and debris (bacteria) from the suspension that can create harmful nitrites before changing the filter media where the debris is partially dissolved. It is important to change the filter media as time permits but not before the water has changed in my opinion.

We mentioned feeding the fish above and this is very important and only things 1 and 2 above should come before it.

So our No.3 is:-3. Feed the fish

Followed by:-4. Clean the filters

Now the last three.

-Cull young

– Place new pairs

– Expand settings

Having completed this task we now have an important list to work on.

To set that up, whenever we get a few minutes to spend with our fish we start at the top of the list and work our way up.

Look for disease; handle any need

Look at the water; change if necessary

Feed the fish

Clean the filters

Cut the small fish and put them in the big tank

Establish new breeding pairs

Expand the settings

We have eliminated the delays caused by having to decide what to do each time. In the 15 minutes we could have wasted trying to decide what to do we could be halfway through our list. The priority list will be different for each aquarist but the principle will be the same.

Finally….make a habit of keeping a diary of all your fishing activities. This will provide valuable information about the frequency of operations and when things like water changes are needed. Time has a tendency to go by so quickly that several weeks can pass since our last water change but without having a reference point, and often, it seems like last week.

Make your plan, work for it and replace worry with happiness.

The Reason We Don’t Remember Names

How many times have you walked up to someone and said, hi I remember your name but I just don’t remember your face. I venture to say probably never. In fact you probably say just the opposite; I remember your face but not your name. The reason we remember someone’s face but not their name is because when we look at their face we are taking 52,000 pictures per second of their face, and their name is abstract. So when you meet someone for the first time and they tell you their name and you tell them your name psychologist tell us that our mind is searching so fast for the next thing to say to them or them to us. In reality you never lock the name in, or should I say into your mind. Yes you do take 52,000 pictures of their face per second, but the name just floats right over the top of your head. Now I have to tell you in 19 years of training executives, professionals, students and every day people I have heard the above statement thousands of times. I myself use to have the worst memory in the world for names and many other things. Being a psychologist and mnemonics trainer in the public and corporate world I have strived to show students in public and corporate programs, how to improve this highly sought after skill of name retention.

In this article I hope to give you some insight and hope for your future. The kind of hope I was able to get 19 years ago after attending a formalized mnemonics workshop. You see today Mnemonics training is becoming more of a formalized study. Clinical studies have now been conducted to show that you can increase your brain power by training the working memory. Specifically I mean the working memory of your mind. Yes fluid intelligence is not an innate or immutable trait of the mind that can’t be improved upon.

In fact a study completed in 2008 in the University Of Michigan Department Of Psychology and published in the New York Times on April 29, 2008 showed findings presented at PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) how fluid intelligence can be improved by memory training. I won’t bore you with the technical aspects of how that study worked, but it proves what I and other mnemonic trainers at MTI have been promoting and teaching in public and corporate workshops throughout the U.S since 1990. We have conducted workshops in corporate America at some of the top fortune 500 corporations throughout the U.S… Training companies like Texas Instruments, teaching the Six Sigma, Xerox in Rochester New York, their 6 step decision wheel, and AT&T their mission statement, (so they could win the Malcolm Baldridge Award in training0. Companies, like Johnson and Johnson, Eastman Kodak, Bausch & Lomb, and many more now use these techniques. I don’t tell this to boast, although we are proud of the work that we have done. I tell this in an effort to gain your interest and attention because of some of the many promises being made out there today without the proper substance or training.

Having spent my earlier professional life working in the Oil and Gas Industry with a company named Arco Oil and Gas, now BP, I held the position of Director of Training and Development in the operations an engineering division in Dallas, Texas. I had been in Houston, Alaska, Tulsa OK., and finally in the headquarters in Dallas. I directed development and implementation of many different types of training programs. My department coordinated college recruiting and placed engineers, technologist, and management trainees on staff in one year training programs with placement upon completion.

The reason I tell you this is If I would have had the techniques and skills I now teach, while developing those programs, I could have remembered all of my students names. You see I, like you, could remember their faces, but not their names. No not even if I saw them at the mall, restaurant, and theatre or wherever. I ultimately was responsible for 400 plus engineers, managers and supervisors future, but had trouble remembering their name.

That being said, I am now going to tell you how your mind remembers and why you need to train it to be more effective today in every walk of life. First let me say the research being conducted today on the plasticity of the brain is exciting. I sometimes feel like I may have been born to soon. So let me say that you control the power to improve your fluid intelligence and no one else does. Yes your parents may have given you 33% of the ability but that’s probably all. I have found in the past 19 years of teaching formalized mnemonic training skills that you can be as smart as you want to be. Clinical studies now show that by doing things like learning new languages, or new operating systems for your computer, or just the act of, will grow your hippocampus. It’s the very part of the brain now being tagged as the central processing system for our memories. In fact some research says that some of the memory traces you lay down everyday in your mind is actually distributed late at night while you sleep, in stage 3 & 4 of your sleep cycles. So rest and REM sleep is important.

Well enough exciting research findings let me now tell you I sometimes meet several hundred people a week and then don’t see them for the next ninety days. At least not until they show up with their associates or family members to attend a two-day workshop. You guessed right, I remember and call them by their name. They’re impressed, I’m impressed, but I impress myself everyday and believe me I am not easily impressed. The exciting thing is you can do this too! Yes you all have an innate ability lying dormant in your mind you just have to learn how to turn the switch on. The beauty of the program we teach is whether you were raised in the north, south, east or west or even in a foreign country you all can do this. It’s simply a matter of training your working memory. The secret is with proper training we can train our conscious and subconscious mind, or the cognitive ability of our mind to work in alignment. I believe that by doing so we remember more efficiently. The process I will call rapid cognition is used in a mindful based stress reducing environment.

When I said before you don’t remember their name but you do remember their face, it’s because you take pictures of their face. The name is abstract and you don’t see the name. In our workshop we show you by using two simple rules for turning abstracts into pictures you can tie that persons name to their face. You tie it to a facial file that will help you remember their name for the rest of your life. Yes I said a facial file. You see we use a simple acronym of F. P .G. , to remember anything whether it be names, formulas, concepts, theories or foreign languages. F stands for file or a mental location somewhere to store information. P stands for picture, everything is stored in a picture format. G stands for glue it’s the bonding agent that keeps the picture in the file long enough to transfer it from the short term memory to the long term memory.

We teach a two day workshop where we cover all four generations of mnemonic systems. Some are passed down 2500 years ago. The first one being association, the second being the chain of visualization, the third the peg system and the fourth the mental file folder system. Each student is tested at the beginning and all along the way to show their improvement, sometimes a 1000% in the first few hours. I have found in training someone, using the power of positive affirmation along with showing them their results they will ultimately learn quicker. It always makes them more receptive to their teach ability factor of being open minded to progress and change. We know they have the willingness to learn because they take 7 hrs. out of their life to attend a memory workshop and pay good money to be there. So we open their minds to learning new processes that show immediate results. The same results that are less time consuming and as tedious as rote memorization takes. In fact we don’t teach memorization we teach you how to picturize your way through life!

I have been doing this for 19 years, 18 of which I have instructed public and corporate in house workshops. Not once have I had someone ask for their money back and we do offer a money back guarantee! Most of them want to attend an advanced program. I found out why when we opened up in Louisiana back in the ninety’s. They wanted to go to the casinos and remember how the black jack cards fell on the blackjack table. So now we know why they wanted the advanced program!

So when people say I just can’t remember names I just smile and ask them if they have tried this? The thing I am alluding to is the Six Step Process for remembering names we teach in our training. We do a lot more than just name retention; such as how to remember formulas, appointments, numbers, dates, speeches and presentations etc (you can see our workshop outline on our website). Somehow though all of these years I have been told by thousands that name retention is their number one problem. I will tell you the six steps but it takes a two day 7hr. program to get to know how the six steps work in a memory matrix for all of us.

The Six Step Process for remembering names:

Step 1- You have to pick a facial file on that person. (Something unique about them and there are rules)

Step 2- Introduce yourself and ask for their name, the proper spelling and the origin.

Step 3- Using rules for turning names into pictures turn the first name and the last name into a picture.

Step 4- Take the first name and the last name pictures and put them on the persons face.

Step 5- Using the pictures for their name make a chain of visualization story to tie the the pictures together.

Step 6- Always repeat the name to the person or yourself before leaving.

We use the above six steps to teach the attendee’s how to remember names. Obviously there is a lot more information that has been absorbed by the student to refine these skills, at the point of conducting our mock cocktail party. I now want to explain how the brain takes that information and uses it to build a memory trace finally stored in the long term memory. I should say my theory of what takes place when you remember or you don’t remember someone’s name. I believe we all have these picture vocabularies in our mind we carry around with us and periodically we use them to learn. For those of us that are formally trained on how to use our memory retention skills, we use them more often. For those of you out there that lack that training you will have to take my word for it own faith. But the beauty is we all have our very own!

I will start by saying our brain works in pictures! To give you the acid test do not think of an elephant! What happens is in a millisecond is your mind throws up a picture of an elephant, a big gray mass, with big floppy ears and a long trunk, an elephant. Now you don’t spell the letters e l e p h a n t, you could do that if I asked you to, but instead you see a picture of an elephant. You then you tell your mind to not think about it. I will tell you why I believe this to be true. You remember when Apple computer came out? You had a neat little mouse you moved around to grab a file folder (a manila folder) and you pulled it over to a trash can, the trash can swelled up then returned to its normal size. It meant you just deleted that file folder. Now we have Microsoft windows and all of these icons we click on and then go to that program. Our mind works in pictures. Think back when you were in first grade or kindergarten and around the top of the room there was the alphabet. Under the letter A was an apple and under the B was a boy or a bat and C a cat or a cow. Then pretty soon you had enough letters and pictures to build words, then sentences, then paragraphs. Well there is your proof. If you don’t believe me try to see a deer next time someone says there’s an elephant.

I have established in your mind that your mind works in pictures so here is what happens to names and faces. We have a wonderful thing in our mind called selective remembering selective forgetting. The things we like we remember easier than the things we don’t like. Now along with that fact faces and names are remembered easier when we meet someone we have a romantic interest in. It works differently those times right. Well I am sure that’s because we lay down those name memory traces with a lot of emotion and hormones that establishes the long term memory process. So that being said here is what happens to everybody else’s names and faces. While we are taking those 52,000 pictures per second, I told you about earlier; when you hear the name it flies right over the top of our head. Hearing their name briefly our brain says, this is not a person I am romantically involved with and what is it he or she wants from me or what do I need from them? Even to the point of us determining their worth or interest to us.

Now that we have established that at the point of introduction is where we lose the name, let me explain what I personally think is happening. Your brain is receiving information from your eyes and the little lock box of your subconscious (the little box that no one has been able to explain how it got there or how it works) is going through thousands of computations. These computations are checking the way that person looks, smells, moves, and all of the other little idiosyncrasies that our subconscious mind finds important or not important. It then tells us if we are safe or if we should we feel threatened. Then in that split second our biases and prejudices are checked to determine interest levels to make our next calculation for listening or talking. It is in that split second that we can lock in that persons name by using skills learned through mnemonic training. The stress hormone called cortisol produced in your adrenal gland will take over. It will either lay down or choose not to lay down the new memory traces at this moment. I believe if we determine that we are proactively going to remember this person’s name using mnemonic skills we can do so. We however must control that proactive step and here’s how.

We teach, by using mnemonics and mindful based stress reducing activities how you encode, recode and store information for easy retrieval when we need it. In this case being a name and face, it’s the best way to move the memory trace you form from a short term memory to a long term memory state. The electrical and chemical transmission that takes place in this process is where we force our mind to activate the beginning of remembering someone’s name and face. Technically two brain cells of the neuron type make up in your brain are connecting. It’s at the tip of the dendrite spine (DS) that firing of a synapse occurs between the two receptors forcing those two brain cells to form a new memory trace. I believe these newly formed memory traces are reinforced to transfer to a long term memory trace or they are not reinforced and passively decay to oblivion.

We can determine how to place those new memories into long term memory through reinforcement using mnemonic devices. It’s called a queue when mnemonics is used to strengthen that new tangle (memory trace) to lay down new identifiable recoded data. Data that can be recalled by the queue or stimuli we build. I believe now with the functional MRI and other probes we can see this take place in the area of the brain called the hippocampus. Though we may not know specifically now that is what happened at some point I believe research of the future will show how these tangles or memory traces are activated and formed. Then at the moment we see that person again the same things we saw originally are served up in our mind from the memories we laid down with that name, face and queue. The same memory traces we laid down originally using mnemonic tools like the six step process for remembering names. This is called the Encoding Specificity Principle. The principle, which says, “Stimuli can retrieve a memory if the memory or stimuli is stored with a queue. What this does is the queue actually retrieves the memory. The same type of memory we now form subconsciously through our emotion, and other sensory perceptions to lay those memories down. What these queues represent are the mental files we build using pictures to recall the persons name. These files are the mnemonic devices you learn by training the working memory.

The fact that people don’t care how much you know before they first know how much you care, shows It’s kind of hard to show someone you care if you can’t remember their name don’t you agree. That statement made by a famous motivator, is the very reason we should all use these mnemonic techniques to remember more names. Mindful based stress reduction training makes us focus. By forming a habit of paying attention, focusing and using something like these 6 steps you will ensure that you will remember someone’s name. When you focus your attention to that person, their face, then turn the names into pictures and put those pictures on their face, you force memory trace structure. Its the very structure necessary to build the long term memory traces. Then with a queue that helps the mind feed the memory back the encoding, recoding, storage and retrieval system works more efficiently. Using our adjustable unconscious mechanism.

Now as we walk around in our daily life we carry around in our mind our picture vocabulary. The picture vocabularies we build throughout our entire life. Then when we learn how they are built we become better authors and readers of life. The very act of laying down these memory traces make our minds grow and stretch. With the fact that we are living longer it is essential that we learn how to learn more efficiently. This will make sure our latter years are packed with new knowledge that in the long run maintains a healthy brain and focused consciousness.

I have always liked Fyodor Mikhalovich Dostoevsky quotes but the one he made ” It seems, in fact, as though the second half of a man’s life is made up of nothing, but the habits he has accumulated during the first half”, has been a challenge to me to try to make that a statement that some our ancestors may have had to live with but not us!

I have to tell you now that I am dyslexic and being a psychologist I know I meet most of the criteria for A.D.H.D. (I probably should be medicated, but I was to old to best tested.) Actually there were no test readily available in my early years of school but through struggles and God’s grace I survived. My oldest daughter graduated from S.M.U in Dallas four years ago and had a job a year before she graduated. I took her to the workshop when she was eight years old and she was then a high B to a low A student. Using the mnemonic training she graduated a year early and had a job a year before she graduated. My youngest daughter now in her fourth year at North Texas State University had an 18 hour course load last semester and made a 4.0 making the presidents list using these techniques. Now my wife was already naturally smart having attended SMU at the age of 16 and completing with an accounting degree by 19. She at the time was diagnosed with a rapid brain wave so you can imagine what she does with this system.

Now I know you think oh yeah it was in the genes, well maybe some actually today they are finding that 33% of it may be in the genes but it is my opinion that it is in the environment and behavior more so. I flunked a year and struggled through school but if I would have had formalized mnemonic training I probably would have excelled. So I am a firm believer that you are capable of being most anything you want to be and my wife and I have raised our girls that way.

Now to sum up what I have tried to give you in a short but deserving longer explanation is that mnemonics is going to be a way of life somewhere in the near future. I believe it will be a structured process introduced somewhere in elementary education and used to help our youth attain better grades and understanding for the future. I am asked in the workshops many times why isn’t this taught in grade school in fact I have one exact statement in letter form from a Vice President of a major stock brokerage firm. I always answer; it’s like the metric system, who’s going to pay for it? But we are paying for it by not doing it. We do let students attend our public workshops with their parents free of charge between the ages of 10-18. Actually girls can pick this up at 8 years of age where as boys mature about 2 years later and at 10 years of age can handle abstracts. I do feel however the U.S. will eventually conform as it is taking off in leaps and bounds in Asia now. Face it look at how many honor students are in India as well, more than we have in total number of students. So America it is time. So write the president and tell him it’s time to research Mnemonics!

Has Science Created Life?

In 1953, Francis Crick wandered into the Eagle pub in Cambridge, England, and announced: ‘We have found the secret of life!’ What he had actually found, or unravelled, was the spiral structure of the DNA molecule. For that amazing achievement he and his fellow worker, Watson, would later share a Nobel Prize.

The first pure sample of what is now called DNA had been extracted from salmon sperm by Friedrich Miescher back in the days of the American wild west. But it took another sixty years to figure out the molecular structure.

Crick’s claim was trumpeted to the world by a euphoric mass media, already under the spell of Darwinism and no longer able to see straight. I have little doubt, therefore, that most members of the general public have been conned into believing that yes, science does now understand all about DNA and is able to create new life forms. ‘I’s all abaat them jeans and chromophone fings, ain’t it? You know, dinosaurs and monkeys that turned into men. Sor it on the tele’.

The fact is that Crick had not discovered the secret of life and science simply does not know what ‘life’ is.

Equally deserving of a Nobel Prize, had one been available at the time, especially in light of the lack of technological support available, was Wohler’s synthesis of the compound Urea, formula: CO(NH2)2, in the year 1828, starting out with non-organic raw materials such as water and ammonia.

Organic Chemicals

The crucial point was that Urea had previously been obtained only from organic sources, such as human urine, hence the name. Apparently, the yellow colour suggested the promise of extracting gold. A range of other substances were also obtained from organic sources, by boiling ants in water, for example – and were classified as being ‘organic’ because of their origins.

Although these mysterious new chemicals seemed very different to compounds such as water (H2O) and copper sulphate (H2SO4), and defied early attempts at analysis, it was slowly realized that main difference lay in the sheer size and complexity of their molecules, with many containing dozens or hundreds, or as we now know, even millions of atoms linked together in long chains, with other atoms or groups of atoms hooked on the sides.

The simplest organic substance is methane, once called marsh gas, its simple molecule consisting of one carbon atom bonded to four hydrogens, hence the formula CH4.

It was then discovered that a vast series of such ‘hydro-carbons’ existed in nature, a whole family of ‘chain’ molecules. The fuel butane, for example, is a bit more complicated, having a chain of four carbons, and pentane has five, hexane has six, and so on.

Each of the four carbon atoms in Butane, a fossil fuel, can make four bonds, a bit like having four hands. When its carbons link hands with those on either side, to form a chain, that leaves the first and last carbons in the chain with a free hand. The molecule is completed by a single hydrogen joining on each end. So that the formula works out as C4H10. In the same way, Pentane is C5H12, Octane is C8H18, and so on.

Crude oil, a fossilised organic substance, consists of a mixture of hundreds of kinds of hydro-carbon molecules. The shortest exist as gases, the medium length as liquids or oils and the longer chains as greases and waxes. The job of a refinery is to separate those molecules to make them available for various purposes such as petrol, heating oil, grease and waxes – and also as raw materials for the plastics industry, plastics being composed of long chain molecules with a variety of other elements taking the places of some of the hydrogens. In fact, chains can be induced to join sideways on with other chains to form solid networks of mechanically strong plastic called ‘polymers’.

The Carbon Miracle

Because it can make four bonds or links to other atoms,Carbon is an amazing element. Astonishing is the fact that it can exist as graphite, composed of flat sheets that can slide over one another, one of the softest substances – but also in a three dimensional crystal lattice as diamond, one of the hardest substances known.

And more recently, carbon has been obtained in single sheets, one atom thick, called graphene, a material which not only conducts electricity well, but is flexible and transparent and therefore useful in manufacturing computer screens.

How interesting that carbon is atomic number 6, the Biblical number of man – and that it forms the twin spines of the DNA molecule, an essential component of living things.

Incidentally, one of problems faced by early researchers was to work out the structure of the benzene molecule, which analysis showed to have the formula C6H6. But how could such a molecule exist? It seemed to be a hexane molecule, but with eight hydrogens missing.How could that be possible? The puzzle was solved by the chemist Kekule in a dream one night wherein six snakes writhed about – then all of a sudden joined head to tail! Eureka! The Benzene ‘ring’ was discovered. And this time some of the carbons had double bonds with their neighbours. Similar and more complex ring structures are found in DNA ‘bases’, such as Adenine – A. See Google images.

I mention Kekule’s dream, because Francis Crick also had a dream, one in which he saw a spiral staircase – the missing key to the structure of the DNA molecule. One of the keys to creativity is to relax and let the creative mind play.

The Death of Vitalism

Prior to Wohler’s synthesis of urea, it was believed that one reason organic substances were so different was because they had previously been obtained from living things, and must contain an special ingredient, a ‘vital’ spark of life. Hence the ‘vitalist’ theory. Wohler’s work was regarded as a death blow for vitalism because he had started out with non-organic materials.

The point is that the atoms that constitute urea are simply atoms, pieces of inanimate matter – combinations of neutrons, protons and electrons. There is no ‘vital’ spark of ‘life’ in them. Likewise, the urea molecules in a living organism are also simply composed of inanimate matter. The urea is not ‘alive’. Furthermore, the Human Genome Project has shown that all the genes and DNA in the human body are also not ‘alive’.

One consequence of this work has been the realization that it is ‘not all in the genes’. The genes simply do not contain the magic ‘blueprints’ required to construct a living organism or direct the development of any part of it in the womb, from egg to embryo to birth. There is a ‘vital’ part missing that science cannot find.

Vitalism Resurrected

As maverick evolutionist Rupert Sheldrake stresses, to explain these miracles of life, we need to revive the old vitalism theory. As an updated version he proposes that the design and growth of every organism is controlled by an invisible, non-physical ‘morphic field’ which he compares to a magnetic field and the way it draws iron filings into various patterns.

The actions of flocks of birds, bees in a hive and ants in a colony are also thought to be under the direction of morphic fields. No doubt the fields also impart instinct, which is why the young of migratory birds are born knowing how to navigate by the sun. The Bible term for a morphic field would seem to be ‘spirit’, a non-physical component about which science knows nothing (Job 32:8, Ecclesiastes 3:21).

Armed with this information, let us now take a closer look at the BBC’s claim that Dr Craig Venter has ‘created artificial life’.

What Is Life?

In the 1890’s, some time afterdiscovery of cells and singe-celled organisms such as bacteria, a strange new pathogen was found infecting tobacco plants and was named the ‘tobacco mosaic virus’, the word virus simply meaning ‘poison’.

Viruses are too small to be seen with an ordinary microscope because most are smaller than the wavelength of light. However, with the aid of an electron microscope, some 5,000 viruses have been studied in detail, and some very interesting pictures are available on Google images using the search term ‘virus’.

Viruses are considered by some to be a life form, because they carry genetic material, sometimes just a singe circular chromosome. However, they can only replicates inside living cells of other organisms, and lack other key characteristics, such as cell structure. They are therefore described as ‘organisms at the edge of life’.

Not surprisingly, since science has no idea of what life is, we are informed that ‘The origins of viruses in the evolutionary history of life are unclear’. Oh dear.

I suspect that the interest of Craig Venter and others in ‘synthetic life’ must have been triggered by the following basic facts – one, that viruses possess DNA despite not being ‘alive’; two, that they can only reproduce inside cells of living organisms; and three that their DNA is contained in a relatively ‘simple’ single circular chromosome.

Venter’s ambitious plan, therefore, was to read the sequence of the C, A, T and G bases in a virus, then use a computer to somehow assemble an identical genome from scratch. Apparently they actually had four bottles, labelled C, A, T and G which contained zillions of bases, made from non-organic materials, that the machine could call on as and when required. This was a monumental task, which took some years to carry out. Nevertheless, it succeeded. A synthetic chemical genome was assembled.

The second step was to find the simplest possible bacterium, and then ‘infect’ it with the synthetic viral DNA, the man-made genome, and see what happened. Although 99% of their experiments failed, and the wait was sometimes frustratingly long, prompting them to try several other bacteria, persistence paid off, as it had for Thomas Edison a century earlier who created some 8,000 electric light bulbs before he succeeded. The viral DNA replicated and multiplied. A true Eureka moment.

Synthia – a Tailor-made Bacterium

A BBC headline later informed the world that Dr Craig Venter, whose team had catalogued the Human Genome, had now created ‘tailor-made bacteria’ that will ‘create a new industrial revolution’ by making possible the mass-production of a variety of chemicals including drugs and fuels.

The project this time was to strip out the natural chromosome of a bacterium, then replace it, not with viral DNA, but with a modified copy of its own DNA, again synthesised using inorganic materials. Again, it worked. But there was one little problem I.e. how to prove that they really had done what they claimed? The answer was to add a ‘signature’ to the new DNA.

Computer Code

In computers, letters are represented, using ASCII code, by series of 0’s and 1’s, the so called binary notation system. Using the same basic principle Venter et al devised a code whereby sequences of C, A, G and T bases in a strip of DNA could be used to represent the letters of the alphabet and hence words. With the insertion of appropriate ‘stop’ codes, the quotations would be ignored by the host cell and simply replicated along with the rest of the DNA.

Thus, as a demonstration of their expertise, the names of forty project members plus three famous quotations were coded into the DNA sequences of their artificial genome. One quotation read: ‘To live, to err, to fall, to triumph, to recreate life out of life’ – a quotation from the late James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. And so Synthia was born and authenticated.

Ironically, they had not obtained permission to use Joyce’s quote, which caused a legal fuss. And neither had they created ‘life’. Not to detract from the amazing work involved, what Venter had actually done was to develop the first living cell to be controlled entirely by synthetic DNA – a chemically synthesized genome. He had not created a cell.

As Venter explained it: Quote: “We’ve now been able to take our synthetic chromosome and transplant it into a recipient cell – a different organism.

‘As soon as this new software goes into the cell, the cell reads [it] and converts into the species specified in that genetic code.’

The new bacteria replicated over a billion times, producing copies that contained and were controlled by the constructed, synthetic DNA.

‘This is the first time any synthetic DNA has been in complete control of a cell,’

The work was described in a paper entitled Creation of a bacterial cell controlled by a chemically synthesized genome,published in 2010 in the Science journal. I leave the reader to critique the title.

BioBricks

The technology has now moved on rapidly, and the proverbial floodgates have been opened, so that anybody wishing to dabble in ‘synthetic biology’ can now purchase a wide range of so-called ‘BioBricks’, ready-made chunks of DNA to experiment with. Universities are even encouraging students to help do the donkey work by synthesising small chunks of DNA at home that can then be sewn together as part of master projects. Although good may come, the immediate prospect is somewhat sobering. Is another Pandora’s box being prised open?

A New industrial revolution?

Dr Venter and his colleagues hope eventually to design and build new bacteria that will perform useful functions. ‘I think they’re going to potentially create a new industrial revolution,’ he said. ‘If we can really get cells to do the production that we want, they could help wean us off oil and reverse some of the damage to the environment by capturing carbon dioxide.’

Comment:

In light of what was said earlier, what Venter has achieved might be compared to a man changing the CD in a car then having the media claim that he had created a new car. Of course, if the man can make a CD, then given enough time he might be able to build a whole car as well. So we might suppose that, given time, Venter could also build a whole artificial cell as well.

By implication, however, we might compare to Sheldrake’ morphic field to the human driver of a car. Should Venter ever be able to manufacture a ‘car’, it would still just be just a complex assembly of inanimate bits and pieces – and lacking a ‘driver’, to switch it on and operate it.

Significant Problems Encountered in Implementing a New Strategy in a Business

”Strategy is defined as the determination of the basic long-term goals and objectives of the business, and the adoption of courses of action and the allocation of resources necessary to achieve those goals” Chandler(1962)

Creativity is a process and can be considered in less than three stages. These are: strategic analysis; this is the stage where through analysis the expert identifies opportunities for threats, strengths and weaknesses in the environment; The strategy formulation stage, where choices are made and the strategy implementation stage is the stage where the plan is translated into action.

Strategy implementation or strategy implementation is defined as “the translation of strategy into organizational action through organizational planning and design, resource planning and strategic change management”.

Analyzing the statement, it is clear that the implementation of the plan is difficult. Therefore, the successful implementation of the strategy will depend on how the various components of its implementation are successfully integrated and work together.

1st Note: Early solid food.
