## Hindu Vedas – Vedangas And The Great Sages Associated With Vedas – Part II

The Vedas are inexhaustible and one cannot master them completely.

The great sage Bharadwaja began to study the Vedas. He finished theone purusha ayus (meaning the total length of one’s life which is one hundred years). Still, he still has a lot to learn. He prayed to another purusha ayus Indra. Indra agreed. Another hundred years passed. But Bharadwaja found that he still needed to learn more. He prayed again and Indra gave him another 100 years. Thus 300 years passed. After 300 years Indra appeared and Bharadwaja was proud that he had finished the Vedas completely. Indra created three huge mountains in front of him. He took earth from each mountain and said to the sage, “Oh, Bharadwaja, what you have learned so far is equal to these three hands of earth only and whatever Vedas you have yet to learn is equal to these three great mountains.” Thus the Vedas are endless.

Sage Vaisampayana, a disciple of Ved Vyas compiled the twenty-seven branches of the Yajur Veda.

Sukarna was the son of Sumanthu and the grandson of the sage Jaimini; they studied one branch of the Sama Veda. Sumanthu divided the Sama Veda samhitha into thousands of branches. Kaysaly, Hiranyanabha, Pauspincha are his disciples. Hiranyabha had 500 of his disciples. Another disciple Kruthi has read twenty-four Samhithas of the Sama Veda.

Maharishi Maunchakesh formulated Nakhyatra, Veda kalpa, Samhitha kalpa, Agnirakshya kalpa and Santi kalpa. These five bikalpas are the essentials of the Atharva Veda Samhitha.
