Yoga and Ayurveda – Sisters for Life

I’m sure most of you reading this either go to a yoga class once or twice a week or know someone who does. It’s the new fad, there’s a yoga studio on every corner. But, did you know that Yoga has a sister called Ayurveda. It is not as powerful and in your face as Yoga, Ayurveda, the quiet and reserved sister who has been waiting for her turn to shine and now the time has come.

Ayurveda and Yoga are important parts of an ancient system from India called the Vedas. Ayur or ayus translates from Sanskrit to mean “life”, and Veda is knowledge or science. Truly the ‘Science of Life’, Ayurveda is now emerging as one of the most important forms of holistic medicine in today’s world. Ayurveda, like yoga, is concerned with balance. It offers a unique treatment program, explaining the true health of the mind, body, emotions and spirit and their proper coordination. Ayurvedic practitioners offer lifestyle modifications that include diet, herbal formulas, color and gem therapy, massage, Yoga and meditation. They prescribe certain asanas or postures that help balance energy in the body and mind. The environment we live in, our relationships, the food we eat, our work, the climate we live in, our faith and the way we work with our little creation is very important as this will determine our state of physical, mental and spiritual happiness and contentment. .

Energy and vibration are the foundation of Ayurveda. The universe is made up of breathing forces, cosmic elements that together, make up the entire physical universe. Everything around us, including ourselves, is made of these things; earth, water, fire, air and ether which are constantly changing and evolving. Ayurveda classifies these five elements into three doshas or metabolic types.

Vata is a combination of ether and air and has the same characteristics of these elements: dry, volatile and strange. When fire and water combine it is called Pitta, its main characteristics are hot, quick and decisive. Kapha is a combination of earth and water: strong, slow and methodical. These three doshas are present in all living cells. They affect us not only on a physical level, but also on subtle mental and emotional levels such as harmony, energy and inertia. They influence everything we are and do. The choices we make and have made since the time we were born. In fact they make us what we are, different people.

Each of us has a dosha that is more dominant or stronger than the other two, one secondary and the third, which is less important. This combination of the three doshas is determined in the womb.

Four main factors are responsible for each person’s type of metabolism:

1. Fathers metabolic type.

2. Maternal metabolic rate.

3. State of the uterus.

4. Food and drink taken by the mother before and during pregnancy.

Our metabolism should stay the same, but it doesn’t. Unaware of our own nature, we unknowingly cause disharmony by eating the wrong things, doing the wrong exercise, and even living in the wrong place.

In Ayurveda, nine types of combinations can manifest:

1. Vata

2. Pitta

3. Here

4. Vata-Pitta

5. Pitta-Kapha

6. Vata-Kapha

7. Pitta-Vata

8. Kapha-Pitta

9. Kapha-Vata

Famous people and their metabolic type:

Vata-Pitta – Gwyneth Paltrow, Celine Dion

Pitta-Kapha – Drew Barrymore, Princess Diana, Nick Hucknall

Kapha-Pitta – Oprah Winfrey, Michael Moore

Pitta-Vata – Prince Harry, Tom Cruise

Vata-Kapha – Bono, Lulu

Vata manifests itself as a light body, thin, very tall or very short. Muscles are weak and veins tend to protrude from the skin, which is dry and thin, like wool. Hands and feet tend to get cold and there is intolerance to cold food, weather etc. Digestion is poor and appetite is weak, so nutrients are not absorbed well and constipation is often a problem. Nails and teeth may be abnormal and protruding. Joints are often unstable and joint fractures can occur. The voice is harsh and dry. Vata, when purified, often causes insomnia and confusion. Vata is mobile and produces a need for constant change, vigorous exercise and talk. Vata produces a quick, alert and creative mind. The speed of Vata shows instability from one place to another, changing things and friends often. It causes hidden feelings of insecurity, fear, loneliness and anxiety. Dreams can be scary. Memory is not long, but the ability to multitask is good.
