Look at these interesting sites and ask yourself, “What different types of content are there?” You need to quickly notice images, photos, video, music, and text to grab and hold your attention. Dig a little deeper and you’ll find articles, ebooks, or RSS feeds.
Have you noticed that many sites are starting to offer interactive content? Users do not create their own interactive content, rather they use the interactive tools on these websites to educate themselves, prepare themselves, answer their specific questions, or simply enjoy themselves. Examples of these interactive tools are online games, online calculators, blogs, maps, journals, polls, and comment boxes. Communication content is best when it is colorful, easy to use and engaging while managing to be useful, helpful and informative.
Website visitors LOVE interesting and high quality content. That is clear from the success of the other areas listed above. What makes high-quality content? Users must have a reason to really like it. That may be because your message is easier to use, better quality, more relevant, more complete, more fun, more unique – more SOMETHING.

Every website is trying to provide information to people – for various reasons to be sure. Savvy website owners know that people want quality information on their sites – not just edited, keyword-laden verbage – and they give it to them.
For many of us, the buzzword of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) conjures up this disturbing image of millions of websites competing for page rank and a keyword, which ultimately leads to web traffic and income of some kind. There are books, articles, and companies dedicated to helping you make your site “search engine friendly”. Everyone seems to have tips on how to win this race. Too much emphasis, however, on the top rankings and the search area has created a large number of unfriendly sites, which makes it tedious and time-consuming to find one or 2 really useful sites. Even the most targeted searches often yield tens of thousands of results. Do these search engine companies really think this is what we want?
How many searches have you done where the top results are sites that are not maintained as evidenced by many broken links, inactive contact forms and the like? Search results are often filled with misleading information that will lead nowhere other than an ad page or directory. (I don’t have anything against the admins, the misleading ads/info keep taking me there. all but impossible to find anything.
So, how do these dead or inactive sites float to the top of search engine results? Good question to be sure and I certainly don’t know the answer. They seem to have found the SEO formula, but I hate playing this game because I know I’m providing my visitors with quality information. But what good is my high-quality site if no one can find it? I believe that these search engines want to show the best and most relevant sites, but until they figure out how to evaluate them properly, we all have to lower our standards to please them. It’s a confirmation problem!
The Future of Content: What will your site need to stay competitive?
It is clear that search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN are working to solve this problem, but there is still a ways to go. Meanwhile, the content will continue to evolve, with new types of content being introduced every day. Some of the most popular sites on the web add interactive content to get and keep people’s interest.
To stay competitive each site will need to do something unique – offer something different, make it look better, make it better organized, make it more fun – something. If you are not creating or modifying your site for a full web 2.0 site, I believe interactive content is a great way to start. Interactive content is easy to add to your site and can give your visitors the tools they need to qualify themselves, answer their specific questions, understand what to expect when using your service and more.
In the future, it will be even more important that your website can quickly establish you or your company as an authority in your field. Interactive tools allow people to experience your authority through location and touch, not just reading your PhD-sounding articles.
Hopefully, you now know more about the types of content you’ve been using and will continue to develop an understanding of how these different types of content can be used for different purposes. We discussed the problem search engines have caused site builders.
