From Dark Days Into the Light Came a Really Useful Copyeditor’s and Proofreader’s Guide
My love of collecting similar things started as a child, when I collected my parents’ empty 6-packs of cigarettes. Piles of them grew under my bed – luckily my parents weren’t heavy smokers – until I got bored of them and got into milk cartons and bus tickets. I had a strange personality as a child! Fortunately, I seemed to grow out of that, and went to University to study biochemistry and chemistry to PhD level, and eventually moved into a career in science and engineering. Here, I was able to satisfy my passion again, especially when I was freelancing, after I was made redundant one dark day in May, back in 1988, when jobs were plentiful and suddenly scarce.
Going back a bit to my PhD days, the same passion grew, out of frustration, to find the right reference, to dot every ii and cross every it, with authors’ names and addresses, and to make sure that every volume and page number was spot-on. This was of necessity, when, as a student, I was studying feverishly and trying to write my thesis, a dot or a space out of place in a reference could spell disaster! All of this is because I find it very annoying when important information I need to further my research work or write a thesis was not available, or inaccessible, due to an incomplete or poorly typed index.
After that, my obsessive-compulsive disorder was greatly strengthened by joining the West African Examinations Council, copying and proofreading and setting O and A level exam papers. I saw it as a very important job, making sure that every exam question is read thoroughly and that all the information is present and correct.
After that, it was the Biochemical Journal that took me under their wing, where I went around and read a housestyle book, which was not a bad thing, as it was a heavy foot! Additional lists were drawn up with zeal and references were strictly checked, for fear of being punished by citation or worse. (It was hard for new things to take in those days.)
Then came a small intervention at the Institute of Marine Engineers where, although the work carried the need for perfect accuracy and attention to detail, it was not so difficult in terms of style and therefore allowed to do simple things, such as desktop publishing and desktop printing. design. Know that, after being strongly forced at that time, I did not give up easily, and I tried to stamp my style on things, I tell you! I wasn’t about to give up that easily. Fortunately, I stayed there for a long time and it almost cured my illness, which continued with my next job, which was focused on business and accounting, although it was under scientific classification. There isn’t much time or phone calls to make a to-do list there. Then, one day, out of the blue, bam! I was made redundant! That was shocking… I thought I would never raise my head and see the light of day again, until, little by little, I discovered the joy of editing independently at home.
There, I could give full rein to my earnest desire to compile a list of anything that moves, or stand still long enough on paper, and spend hours checking and rechecking those inaccurate pointers to my heart’s content.
After a shaky start, as I experimented with things like drag and drop, I happily settled into copying and proofreading various scientific books and journals, and haven’t looked back. Once I was fully allowed into the world of freelance editing, I found that I had lists coming out of my ears, and the ones I had made were very useful. So I started wondering if anyone else might find them useful.
This list includes:
Biochemical Textbook References
Journal abbreviations
Publisher sites
Biochemical and Equipment Companies
Journal of Biochemical Housestyle
Standard Binomial
Abbreviation
Vocabulary
And so I spread my wings a little and worked on medicine, copying and proving many topics, and compiled the following list:
Come from Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and the British Medical Journal:
Bibliographic references
Abbreviation
Vocabulary
The style of the house
Being a freelance editor myself, I found it made life so much easier that the list was compiled from the actual journal itself, rather than from every field of science or medicine. It cuts things down and saves a lot of time, making things easier and clearer.
It took time and pain to look things up on the Web or in big dusty tomes.
Compiled over a career spanning 20 years, these guides are for copywriters, proofreaders, editors, writers and journalists: and include lists of house style, abbreviations, and terminology, equipment manufacturers, university addresses and book and journal references in common use.
