Worried About Business? Keep Calm and Keep Marketing!

After the election there is an expectation that economic conditions will improve, but what I hear from many of you is not the case; and some are very worried in the lead up to the Christmas and holiday season.

When I thought of a good solution to this problem, I found this series of Keep Calm and Keep Calm and Posters Generator that I wrote especially for the time when your mood is low, to help your confidence and provide the right action to take.

Part 1 – Tips to improve sales:

  1. Develop 30-day marketing goals each month. Break down how many sales you need each month to meet your income goals. Determine how many meetings, phone calls, emails and blog posts you need to have, do, send or write to generate targeted marketing.
  2. Do the first day-to-day, sales-creating tasks. Focus each day, first thing in the morning, on the actions at hand “selling” or it will definitely lead to sales. Phase 2 – Simple Marketing Tactics:

  • First of all don’t be tempted to stop selling! This is not the time to cut back on marketing. The key to building customer awareness is to take consistent, regular action. Make sure to keep track of your sales activities for at least six months so you can track your rate of return.
  • Keep selling your products or service. Little and often is better than one big, expensive campaign. The more you grow in the knowledge of potential customers, the more they will feel that there is something that attracts them to you. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard it from my clients – it should have been! They didn’t know it was my marketing ploy.
  • Identify your best product or service in terms of revenue, then focus your marketing and sales efforts on this alone. Add as many low-cost marketing options as you have time, such as Twitter and Facebook Pages to spread valuable information about how to solve customer problems or bring them joy. Update your LinkedIn profile regularly with updates about your business and any valuable content such as blog posts.
  • Find out how you are different from your best customer and focus on making this better. Define what your unique selling point is and promote it consistently. Being different and finding that difference is easy in a service-based business because YOU are different. Gaining differentiation in the product market means supplementing or extending your products with value-added services, such as lay-by’s, special delivery, or special customer service – there are a thousand different options. The secret is to understand what you need to do to make your service or product such an important part of someone’s life that they are never tempted by your direct competitor’s offers.
  • What makes your marketing message unique is your story, your purpose, and your values. What makes your message compelling is that it’s the middle customer – you’re talking to “hot button” customers that your service or product serves as a necessary part of their life or business. It needs to fit into emotional metaphors: looking good, feeling happy, succeeding, rewarding yourself – refer to Maslow’s Hierarchy of the highest needs.

Part 3 – Tips for Improving Cash and Price Management:

  • Focus on cash management – reducing costs and tracking cash flow carefully. It is very important that you understand your monthly financial situation. Decide where you can cut costs, and make sure every week that you understand your income. As you cut costs using this formula, for every $2 you cut in business expenses, invest $1 in your marketing investment.
  • Start collecting in the last 30 days. You want your money now. Once a customer is past 30 days, get on the phone and track who is paying for renewal accounts. Make sure you are ready with payment methods so you can get paid quickly.
  • Focus on Price – time to raise your prices? If you raise your prices by 1% that will give you an 11% increase in income. In comparison, you would need to increase sales volume by 1% to generate a 5% increase in revenue.
  • It’s important to add value, when raising prices! Adding value continuously to your products and services is a way to get repeat customers and new business through referrals. The secret of pricing is information: When the right customer sees your product or service in the right context – price will not be the main factor in their buying decision.

Part 4 – Tips to Control Your Mind:

Here are three simple ways to think about business that can dramatically change your mindset and the potential of your business:

  • Stop trying to be perfect if you want to be successful! We strive to show customers that we are flawless to be loved and respected. But you can’t please everyone, and you shouldn’t try. When you accept who you really are and decide to be real, instead of perfect; you open yourself up to real customer relationships, real happiness, and tangible success.
  • Control Your Negative Self-Talk! Apart from our thoughts, nothing is completely under our control. Positive thinking is at the forefront of every great success story. The mind must believe it can do something before it can actually do it. So, be careful of your negative self-talk – instead speak positively and with a positive attitude.
  • Meditation is the key to changing the way you think! Find silence every day to reflect on the good and bad experiences that have come up, and look for habitual patterns that you need to change. Learn from your daily meditation. Work on the right mindset every day because it will be 80% of your success in business.
