Fuller Lips – How Lip Enhancement Works

Aaaahhhh, full, plump looking, soft lips. Full lips are definitely a sign of “youth” but what happens to our lips when we start growing? The lips become thinner, less attractive and soon, a person may stop wearing lipstick because the upper lip disappears, especially when smiling. When this shrinking process is seen in the mirror, vertical lines usually start to attack the lips making mature women look good in the past.

Women are not the only ones who want soft and full lips. Men with thin and firm lips can show a strong attitude in the boardroom; however, men with full lips look attractive, boyish and young.

Lips are soft tissue and as a man or woman begins to grow, the volume decreases which means the tissue shrinks.

There are many ways to regenerate the soft tissues in the mouth; the old standby – bovine collagen, Zyderm® and Zyplast® are competitive. Restylane®, CosmoDerm® and ComoPlast® (human collagen cadaver), Radiance®, Artecoll® and others have entered the market of “fillers”. These new fillers do not require skin testing for allergic reactions and are all injectable. The procedure time varies from 3-10 minutes and some patients report that these types of injections can be painful. These services can be expensive because they are not permanent fixes and these injections need to be repeated every few months to keep the mouth full. The most common side effect, as with any injection, is redness, bruising and swelling at the injection site lasting less than three weeks.

A widely used permanent oral system is Gortex. Gortex strips (threads of a foam-like material) are inserted into the mouth; the lips become slightly bigger after the procedure is completed but some users complain that their lips feel tight, not soft and supple. Some of these implants cannot be removed if a problem arises because oral tissue grows and surrounds the implant. Possible complications include infection, migration or dislodgement of implants and lip asymmetry is a concern.

Another somewhat permanent solution is fuel injection; the patient’s fat is usually removed from the abdomen or buttocks, washed off and re-injected into the lips. While this may be a safe method, the fat tends to reabsorb quickly, softening the lips.

Recently beyond gloss, lipstick, and other types of topical preparations have been introduced promising, fuller lips with more definition and volume. Many cosmetic companies have jumped on this bandwagon promising users that their special ingredients will produce fuller, luscious lips after a few weeks of use. In fact, there are more than 200 new products that have been introduced to the market in the last two years ranging in price from $6.99 to $40. Instead of stopping traffic jams, some of these products produce burns, mouth sores and empty pockets.

Some cosmetic companies use natural ingredients in their formulas but some formulas can be misleading. No product can deliver the appearance of topical collagen injections. The way these products work is through the use of irritating ingredients such as niacin, cinnamon, caffeine or peppermint; these ingredients can cause temporary swelling with dilation of blood vessels and mild swelling, giving the illusion of fertility. Some preparations require the user to rub the lips vigorously for several minutes and this friction leads to some degree of temporary swelling.

Most women and men want fuller lips because soft lips make them feel sexier and more attractive. Consumers are willing to spend more to have “the look”; but not everyone agrees that the contents will deliver what they promised. Dr. Sam Most, Head of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle asked seven women to use a specific topical whose website says that their product increases the volume of the real mouth and contour by an average of 40.7 percent; Dr. Most said, “In studies that used the product as it was administered for a long time there was no noticeable change in the mouth.”

Is there a real difference in using topical applications that promise full lips, pouty lips or lipstick and liner enough? Perhaps Yoki Ono, a salesperson at a designer boutique on Madison Avenue, quoted in the NY Times, has the answer: “You can find delicious Buffalo wings and eat them.”

Or better yet, save yourself a bundle of money and scrub your lips with a baby toothbrush and petroleum jelly for about a minute, your lips will be plump and soft – guaranteed!
