Be Selfish With Your Goals
Often people with good intentions set goals that are designed to satisfy others rather than themselves. Even if the goal is set, the results will lead to failure. Why? As the specific content of this article shows, you need to think about your goals and choose the ones that mean something to you.
Through the evening news sections, magazines, talk shows, radio programs and advice from family and friends, we are constantly subjected to a whole range of goals that anyone with half a brain should strive for. If we listened to all the experts, we would all want to be perfectly fit and rich people with at least two college degrees under our belts.
Now I won’t deny that there are great benefits to being healthy, financially or highly educated, but let’s be honest here – one does not need all of the above to live a successful and happy life. There are many overweight people who are happy to avoid the distractions of making careful food choices and exercise and instead focus on earning money or spending time with family. By the same token, there are many physically fit people who see no need to bring in extraordinary levels of income to be happy; they would live with what they need to live.
I firmly believe that we should all constantly strive to improve ourselves, but there is no one blueprint that we all have to follow. What may be important to me (business and management) may not be important to you, and vice versa. For this reason, when deciding what goals you would like to pursue you should always avoid the desires of others and choose goals that are dear to your heart.
This sounds incredibly selfish, but obviously I don’t encourage accepting goals that would hurt others, and ideally in a committed relationship you and your significant other share the same goals. But when push comes to shove, if you choose someone else’s goal over your own, you’ll be doing yourself a disservice.
Take, for example, weight loss. Many wealthy people live happy and successful lives despite their hardships; you don’t have to be fit as a fiddle to have fun. Let’s say one of these overweight people decides one day to finally buckle under the public’s constant harping about the benefits of losing weight and start a diet. What was going to happen?
Chances are very high that a person can adjust their diet and get off to a good start. Almost all of us can lose a few pounds in the first few weeks, especially since most of the initial weight loss is water. But at this point chances are good that the dieter will be unhappy, and this unhappiness will grow over time. Eventually when the body stops losing water weight and switches to fat loss, weight loss will decrease by about a pound or two per week.
Every time the dieter’s spirit and hope in life will be disturbed, and this can also affect other areas in which he was already successful, such as his relationship with his family or his business. Eventually he will give up his diet in disgust, and immediately going back to his old eating habits will not only gain what he lost, he will gain even more! The food you eat has a negative effect on the body’s metabolism, so often a person who stops eating will end up weighing more than he or she did not eat in the first place.
Obviously weight loss is a great goal that can provide a lifetime of benefits, but it’s not for everyone! If you are not passionate about such a goal, you can harm other areas of your life when stress is added and morale and motivation decrease due to lifestyle changes, and then to add insult to injury you can end up heavier than you are. if you didn’t even try to obey the standards of society.
The above example holds true for every purpose under the sun. Many people love the world of business and all its risks and challenges, but others may prefer to avoid the stressful situations and problems that all entrepreneurs face. Maybe they would like to live a middle class life, stay healthy and enjoy hiking or camping trips with a partner on the weekends while those who are business oriented maybe work overtime.
Choose only goals that are compatible with your desires and needs, because choosing a goal that is not compatible with society or family representatives is a guaranteed formula for failure, and can easily do more harm than good.
