DIY All Natural Dog Shampoo

Once I learned about the health benefits of essential oils, I started changing my world right away. Not only are all the products we use for ourselves and our families full of harmful chemicals, but so are many of the products available for your pet! After all, if something is going to hurt us humans after 10-15 years of continuous use, who cares if it will hurt your dog or not? Most dogs have a lifespan of no more than 10 years or so, right? Well, in my opinion, NO, it is WRONG and there is NO reason to expose our animals to harmful chemical products. Shampoos, skin care products and coats and flea and tick repellants are among the worst. And it’s very easy to make your own natural and safe products that can clean your pet and provide protection from bugs and critters.

My dogs walk between Arizona and Wyoming. Since both climates are dry, skin issues are common. Although fleas are not a real problem, I prefer not to put myself at risk for flea infestations. Ticks, flies and mosquitoes on the other hand can be a problem. Using essential oils in DIY Pet Shampoo protects my boys from these pests. In addition, the use of the right oil in the shampoo can be good for the coat.

The shampoo recipe I use for my dogs is:

3 tbls All Natural Castile Soap

3 tbls Coconut milk

2 tbls of Aloe Vera

6 oz distilled water

1 drop of Peppermint Essential Oil

2 drops of Cedarwood Essential Oil

2 drops of Citronella Essential Oil

2 drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil

2 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil

3 drops of Lavender Essential Oil

Put all this in a clean bottle, shake well before each use. Apply enough to a good lather. If possible leave it on the coat for a few minutes before washing. Do this in small batches as the coconut milk evaporates. You can also leave out the coconut milk. Also take it easy with Peppermint. I know everyone loves the smell but… Peppermint is a deterrent to bugs, spiders especially are repelled by the smell. You don’t want your dog’s scent to be so strong that it bothers him. It is also known to help with constipation. A very strong smell can cause unwanted bowel movements!

If you have trouble washing the shampoo off or it leaves the coat too greasy, use this clear cleansing formula:

1 cup distilled water

3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar

1 down Cedarwood

1 drop Citronella

1 drop of Eucalyptus

1 drop Lavender

1 drop Peppermint

1 drop Rosemary

For really dry or itchy skin problems you can add Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree Oil). Be sure to avoid getting any product in your eyes or ears. If you get this in your eyes, rinse with a suitable vegetable oil such as olive or grapeseed. Do not wash your eyes with water. Water will drive the oil deeper into the tissue causing more discomfort.

Since one way to use essential oils with pets is through topical application, you can add other beneficial oils to your shampoo mix. For example, if you are dealing with emotional problems without diffusing the right oils for your pet’s condition, you can add them to your shampoo. I have one Chihuahua with a collapsing trachea. In it I diffuse Copaiba and an essential oil blend known as RC. He also gets a twice daily oral dose of Copaiba and I add it to his shampoo.

With one of our Chihuahuas who doesn’t like to be alone, I move my sleep diffuser near their pen that we keep them in when we are out of the house for long periods of time (4+ hours). I use a variety of combinations such as the standard combination of Acceptance, Peace and Calm, stress away, even Valor. One oil I use and blends are Frankincense, Grapefruit, Lavender and Ylang Ylang. This seems to keep her stress level down while they are gone which makes coming home less stressful and hectic as well! I also add Stress Away to her shampoo mix as a supplement.

There are many ways essential oils can help you help your pet in a natural and safe way. Change your life, and change your pet’s life, for the better! Remember, the market for flavored oils is huge and includes many oils because everyone wants to bake. Find a company that can detail to the customer the process from seed to seal used to ensure a high quality product. A little goes LONG WAYS. Spend money up front on high quality oils and they will last longer and provide a safer and more enjoyable experience.
