Tips For Losing Pregnancy Weight
Diaper bag…look, Wipes….look, stroller…look, baby…look, stretchy belly and buffalo butt??? look. 🙁
If you have kids, unless you have a trainer and a chef, or you have a crazy high metabolism, then chances are you’ve found out how difficult it can be to lose weight after pregnancy. Face it… your body just changes. It looks different, it hangs different, and you probably have fat in places you never knew existed before.
Many women simply accept these changes as part of life. Honestly, when you have a new baby, who wants to focus on recovery? You have this cute little person that you can look at and play with all day. Who wants to take time from their child to exercise???
But does it really have to be? Do you really have to choose one or the other? Do you really have to completely change everything about your life to finally get your body back?
I’m here to tell you that you CAN get both. Believe it or not, it doesn’t take many changes to slowly achieve your weight loss goals. The key is consistency; you can’t lose it overnight. And no matter what anyone says, including your OB, you should start your weight loss goals on your own time schedule, not someone else’s time schedule.
Make sure you get the OK from your doctor before starting any weight loss program; 4-6 weeks after birth is a good rule of thumb.
Here are 7 tips I personally used to lose 50 pounds after my first pregnancy:
1) Drink water like it’s out of style.
Sincerely. Especially if you are breastfeeding. I’ve heard people criticize how important water is if you overhydrate yourself, and while that’s theoretically possible, you’re more likely to become dehydrated. You have to work, HARD, being very hydrated for that to happen. Pregnancy takes a toll on your body, and your body can’t fully recover without enough water. Your body also can’t focus on losing all the pregnancy weight without enough water. It takes water to lose your water weight build-up in your system. So make sure you drink. Try to drink old water as soon as you can get enough of it; It is best not to drink extra calories. Try drinking a tall glass of cold water first thing in the morning when you wake up. I’m not sure if it’s just my imagination or not, but I find that doing that often refreshes your system and gets it ready to burn those calories.
2) Buy a baby and mommy yoga DVD…and use it! 🙂
I know for me, it can be very difficult to carve out a lot of “me” time. And when I have “me” time, the last thing I honestly want to do is exercise. I would rather read a good book or take a bath. This is why I absolutely love mommy and baby Yoga DVDs. You can therefore do your exercise while spending quality time with your newborn. And Baby will love to watch your face and have you down with them. It’s a real win. It’s much better than waiting for the planets to align before running to the gym.
3) Breastfeed if humanly possible.
I’ve been shocked to find out how many doctors have told my friends, “Why are you going through the trouble of breastfeeding, it’s just healthy to feed formula milk, it’s good for your body, and it’s better,” when the facts are. I do not support that at all. I wish doctors would tell women all the facts and let them decide. If they still prefer formula milk then that is their right. But they must have all the facts first.
So, what is breastfeeding? to lose pregnancy weight? So much. Not only does it contain all the natural nutrients for your growing baby, but it takes about 500 extra calories to produce milk in the first place. Also, nursing helps the uterus contract and shrink back to its previous size quickly, reducing how long you look pregnant after giving birth. If that’s not enough motivation, consider this; the only vitamin that is “deficient” in breast milk is Vitamin D, the vitamin of the sun (because many mothers are deficient, not because breast milk does not contain enough). What’s the most important reason to make sure you get out of the stroller and go for a walk in the park to make sure both you and baby get your share of sunshine? The best thing is, since breastfeeding has been shown to boost your child’s immune system, you will spend less time taking care of ear infections and colds, and have more days chasing your children and taking them outside, helping to melt that fat.
As for the formula being more simple? I can’t speak for everyone, but I love that there are no bottles to clean, no nipples to sit with, no formula to mix, no formula to run out of and run to the store, no waste, no. clean, and above all, there is no spitting. Also, once you get the hang of it, you can breastfeed anywhere and no one will be the wiser.
Ok, I think I’ll stop rambling now… 🙂 It really helps keep things moving.
4) Go away!!!
Not enough is said about walking. It really doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Most people will tell you that it takes your butt out of 5 days a week at the bowflex or the gym to get back in shape. That is not true. Believe it or not, your body wants to return to its pre-pregnancy weight. So, just walking is enough to make things go. Be sure to start small. Every little bit helps. Try taking more steps, or parking farther away from the store. You can walk around the perimeter of the grocery store before you start shopping, or walk around your living room while the baby takes a nap. If you need that extra boost, why not carry your little one instead of using the occasional stroller. Just one hour of carrying a 15-pound baby burns 246 calories for a 155-pound woman. This can be easily achieved if you just break down to a few extra minutes throughout the day.
5) Keep taking your prenatals.
Taking your vitamins with help gives your body everything it needs to lose pregnancy weight. With the lack of sleep, and the lack of time that comes with being a new mom, it’s easy to not get all the nutrients you need from your diet. Your body needs to know that it has all the vitamins it needs every day before releasing all the stores that caused your pregnancy. Taking your vitamins every day helps ensure that this is the case. Which vitamins are more beneficial? Vitamin E, Chromium Picolinate, and Vitamin B complex are thought to aid in weight loss; so make sure any maternity product you choose includes these essential vitamins.
6) Eat more fiber and good fats.
It takes fat to burn fat. Try adding more olive oil, nuts, and fish to your diet. Avocados are your friend!!! They are probably the healthiest things you can put in your mouth! Adding more good fats will help you stay full longer, and help burn off all those fat stores you no longer need.
For fiber, try using whole wheat flour instead of white, and eat more asparagus, broccoli, spinach and other green leafy vegetables. Instead of taking stool softeners and lotions, make sure you eat extra fruits as well. No, carbs won’t kill you. 🙂 Fruit is good for you!! Also, try buying ground flax seeds and adding them to your yogurt, cereal, oatmeal, or pancake mix. When you are supported, and you feel bloated, you don’t want to exercise or walk around. So, get your body pumped and get more fiber!
7) Get rid of all the bad things that are being done!!!!
Put down the low-fat margarine, stay away from the low-calorie snack cakes, and ditch the diet coke. Have you ever noticed that most people who eat all that stuff are fat??? It is much better to eat real butter, than to eat a plethora of low calorie margarines that are nothing more than hydrogenated oils. No chemicals. The same thing goes for diet coke. I’ve heard this so-called “health guru” tell a room full of people that he lost weight by drinking diet coke all day. The calories saved by drinking diet coke compared to regular coke can cause you to lose a few pounds if you’re used to drinking a large amount of soda, it’s true. However, the chemicals you ingest do not improve your health one iota. If your goal is to lose weight during pregnancy, then by all means drink diet coke. However, if you’re trying to get lean and healthy, so you can carry around with you a new bundle of joy and live a long, healthy life, do yourself a favor and stop drinking all diet drinks. They are found in water, natural tea, or smoothies made with honey. Your body will thank you later.
It can be very difficult to lose those extra pregnancy pounds. Hopefully these few pointers will help you on your way to your weight loss and fitness goals. Just remember to start small, focus more on getting some form of exercise at least 30 minutes or so a day, not Iron Man training.
