Packing For a Day Trip With a Newborn – Top 6 Necessities

When I first went shopping with a newborn, I decided to buy more than I needed. Why? Well, I didn’t pack well and had to buy new clothes for my baby. (Many parents can guess what happened to his first outfit).

Now I’m an experienced mother of two, I look at that experience and smile – I might laugh one day, but for now. With my advice, and foresight and confidence, you will have a successful journey with your newborn. As a semi-pro, here are my top six things to do when traveling with your baby.

1. Wipe the child. Don’t underestimate the use of these lovely disposable fabrics. You can use them for the obvious (diaper care) and many other things: spraying, cleaning the eyes and nose, and dirty car seats or strollers.

2. Clothes, you and the baby. Extra baby clothes are ideal for spit ups or leaky diapers. If you go through a few changes of clothes during the day at home, you may want to bring some change. I find that the undershirt usually needs changing so I always bring a few of those to count for the baby pants. You also need an extra shirt. You may experience spit up or have a spitting event during a diaper change. If you are breastfeeding, you may have a wet shirt front. What always happens to my shirt? While trying to juggle an unfamiliar stroller, a baby, and my lunch, I ended up eating my food. ‘See, spitting is not always guilty.

3. Diapers. I remember thinking, three hours? I’m going to pack four because we usually leave in about an hour. Pack more — pack twice. I recommend two diapers per hour you will be out of the diaper bag. Keep extra diapers in the back of your car for emergencies.

4. Food. Preparation is key. If you’re a bottle-feeder, include your bottles with powdered milk. Giving the lady at the feeding place a bottle and asking for water will take time, especially for a hungry baby. If you are breastfeeding, dress for comfort. A button-up shirt can work for you, or you can opt for a tank top covered with a t-shirt. Some women like nursing caps or gowns, and some don’t. Newborns get hungry quickly, so no matter where the food comes from, preparation and foresight are important.

5. Stroller. A newborn baby is bright, right? Sure, but the diaper bag and whatever else you find on your trip is not. You need both hands sometimes and a stroller helps. You can always take your baby out of the stroller, but if you don’t have one, you won’t have a place to put it down. If you don’t have a stroller, many places have strollers that you can rent for the day. If the stroller is slightly dirty, see provision #1.

6. Small comforts. My first child loved his Tigger toy and my second child loved his green blanket. Babies are in a strange place, and although adults may not always realize it, they do. Small comfort items make the stroller easy to ride. Some babies need pacifiers for soothing. Other comfort items can be a special toy, a stuffed animal, or a warm hat. If you think your child finds comfort in something and can bring it, do so.

Hope these tips guide you on your first day journey with your baby. Remember, in time, you’ll be an expert like me, and you won’t have to buy clothes while you’re at the store to replace your super-dirty newborn.
