Baby Got Gas? A Guide to Baby Indigestion
Have you ever heard about not eating baby food? Do you know what that is? Well think about heartburn and indigestion and how it can make you feel. The intense pressure in your chest and stomach is enough to make you feel like you’re having a heart attack. Now imagine that feeling in a 2-week-old baby. OH YEAH!!! I can tell you that whatever you hear is 100% amplified by your child. In addition to the intense pain the child feels, he has no way of telling you how he feels. They can’t say “mom my stomach hurts”.
What causes child labor?
Well, for adults there are many reasons, but, for babies, I think we can safely control the consumption of alcohol, smoking and eating spicy food! • Bad-smelling stools and diarrhea in severe cases
Now it is very important that we understand one thing; and that intolerance is not a cause or a disease in itself. It’s just a sign. So what we need to do is to find the root cause of the child’s obesity. So note that the main reasons for not eating baby food are:
• Spoiled food
• Food allergies
• Eating disorders
Malnutrition and Child Abuse
Spoiled food is not good for adults as it can lead to all kinds of stomach problems and this is no different for our children. So, if you feed your baby formula – make sure the best before date has not expired. In addition, you should be extra careful when cleaning all bottles and equipment that touch the baby’s formula. Make sure the water you give the baby or use to mix the powder is safe and boiled.
Another thing to avoid at all costs is reheating bottles. Mothers, if you are guilty of this habit, please stop it IMMEDIATELY. If the child has not eaten it all, throw it away. Also if you are pumping breast milk, make sure you ONLY use sterile containers to store it. Refrigerate and use the milk within a few days or store in the freezer for longer shelf life. Just following these simple tips can greatly reduce a child’s indigestion.

At first it can be confusing trying to distinguish between an allergy and a food sensitivity. So how can you tell the difference and how do you deal with a child’s indigestion?
Food allergies and sensitivities and indigestion in a child – Formula
First we must understand that allergies can cause severe reactions such as hives and severe rashes, vomiting, swelling of soft tissues such as ears and lips, or life-threatening and anaphylactic shock reactions. Emotion; however, they are mild and cause indigestion, discomfort, constipation and skin rashes. You know those foods that ‘don’t agree’ with you.
It is very common for babies to be allergic to cow protein. Take comfort in the fact that most will grow by one year of age, but that first year can be tricky. For those mothers who breastfeed formula, you should switch to a soy-based or infant formula with cow protein.
Oh there is one word of warning; and that is, it is common for babies with beef protein sensitivity to also have soy protein sensitivity. However, make sure there are formulas that do not contain soy or cow’s milk.
Food allergies and sensitivities and indigestion in a child – Breastfeeding
If you are breastfeeding, remove all milk from your diet. This is because the food you eat is transferred to your baby through your milk. So your breast milk may contain cow’s milk proteins from the milk you eat. So, I mean cut out ALL dairy if you want to reduce your baby’s intake. Start reading food labels!!
Trust me, I know this hurts, I’ve done it myself before. You’ll get headaches and feel like you’re lost for a few days as your body detoxifies and processes milk through your system. Basically, you will go through a little withdrawal. Cheese as a drug…who knew?
The Fix – substitute cow’s milk instead of goat’s milk as this is usually well tolerated. After breastfeeding my kids for 6 months, I switched them both to goat milk and guess what?? They still love it. It’s available at most grocery stores and can be frozen if you want to stock up!
So how can you give your baby relief from Baby Indigestion?
You can use gripe water for ‘instant’ relief of baby indigestion. You can find this at any drug store, and many health food stores have an alternative with all natural ingredients. I have tried other pills on the market – most manufacturers call indigestion Colic so look for products that say Colic Relief or something like that. The label “Colic” is a misnomer because colic in babies has nothing to do with vomiting but that discussion is for another newsletter!
In addition, you can give your child a stomach massage and baby enemas to reduce vomiting. Remember that none of these “quick-help” methods target the cause of indigestion; they just carry the symptoms.
The long-term solution to this problem is to look for food sensitivities and allergies that may be causing the indigestion in the first place.
How can this be done?
By analyzing a stool sample from your baby, your doctor will be able to determine if there is undigested cow protein present and if your baby is sensitive to milk.
