Excel Tip – Paste A Name Into An Excel Formula
In this article I have a quick, easy and very useful way to use a list with names that you have already created in your Excel workbook. If you haven’t used lists before in Excel here are three reasons to use them –
- Your formulas will make more sense.
- You can easily edit your formulas.
- You can easily write quick Formulas.
If you want to be able to create a named list in Excel then you can follow one of the two methods described below:
METHOD 1
Use the Formula Bar
First Select a Cell or Group of Cells | Click on the Name Box | Enter a name for your list
(Note there are a few conditions and or restrictions that apply to these names)
1- They can be a maximum of 255 words long
2- they must start with a letter or an underscore _
3- they can include stops
4- they cannot include any spaces or other punctuation marks
METHOD 2
First open a new Excel workbook
-
Go to the Install menu
-
Hit Name
-
To Explain
-
The Define Name dialog box opens for you
-
Enter a list name
-
In the reference box you can adjust the range of cells if you want
-
Click OK
Once you’ve set up a defined range it’s ready to use in any formula you create in your workbook. Start typing your formula, and when you need to use a defined list all you have to do is do the following steps
-
Press the F3 key
-
The Name Manager box will be displayed
-
After this all your named borders will appear
-
Select the name of the range you want included in your formula
-
Click OK
Here’s an example you can work with. I have an array called name value_tax, which contains the tax rate I want to use in my formulas. I also have an ad value of 10,500 in cell A2 of my worksheet. I want to create a new value in cell B2 that is the effective tax amount for the sales price of 10,500, where my sales tax rate is 23%. Let’s proceed to build the formula in cell D2 in my worksheet as follows
=A2*value_tax
Once you are ready to enter the tax rate into your formula simply press F3 and select the specified range from your list.
