## I Was An Adsense Dummy – Are you?

The ease with which webmasters can post AdSense code makes AdSense a very attractive way to monetize a site. Google has taken care of coming up with the right code – you just choose a color and other preferences – and paste the code on your pages to make money. Google has improved the system significantly. They have added new features, such as AdLinks, which allow webmasters to monetize previously unaffiliated sites; they added channels to allow monitoring which areas were not pulling their weight. Like many webmasters I made more from AdSense than I did from a day job and eventually quit to live the life of an AdSense UPS team member.

**But, it is time to rethink.**

The problem with people is that they like to take the easy way out. Google appreciates that and doesn’t give you much responsibility for running ads on your site. The general message is that you should trust them to offer the best ads for the good reason that their salary is a percentage of yours in their interest to increase your ad revenue. And, it’s the same thing they have for sellers: Bid higher and trust us to adjust the bid down so you stay above your nearest competitor. Millions trust Google so let’s assume they are trustworthy.

Then they introduce smart pricing. Now this changes things in many ways that webmasters never appreciated before. The theory behind smartpricing is: Google tracks visitors who “convert” to sellers ie purchases, etc. Some publishers send visitors that convert, others send “low quality” visitors. Surely it’s a fair program that rewards those publishers who send quality visitors? And to do that at the expense of those low quality sites with no original content that have visitors clicking AdSense links only to exit the site? In theory, yes. But, let’s back up for a minute.

Previously Google’s income was tied to yours; if you do more Google has done it. Now, Google adjusts your income with the Smartpricing factor to lower it … well, whatever their formula tells them. That is very simple. Are we putting the fox in charge of the henhouse? No, we are not! Remember, Google is a trustworthy company and their motto is to do no wrong. They claim that if you are smartpriced down then they lose money and return the difference to the seller. So why bother with smartpricing?

There are many good reasons but the main one is the mystery. As a publisher you have no translation information: Google does not share this information. After all, some marketers are good at converting traffic into sales, others haven’t learned that a landing page doesn’t work in Internet Explorer and Firefox… But, even in the last type of marketer, **you** he was punished. A marketer who converts well is not rewarded at the expense of a marketer who wastes all the leads you send them. But, that’s not all. Many marketers do not or cannot allow Google to track their conversions. How these events affect smart pricing is unknown but it would not be a stretch to think that there is a formula in another algorithm that tells Google how much to penalize. So, even if your site is a high quality site and your visitors are more likely to convert than visitors from anywhere else **you can end up with the lowest rate because the formula says your traffic is garbage!** Above all, *as you have no knowledge of conversion rates* You can’t even work to improve your income.

**How do you know if your income would triple what it is now if it wasn’t for Smartpricing? You don’t have it.**

This is what every publisher should do regularly: Try the competition. Until now that was not easy as there was no credible competition in Adsense. Now there is. Chitika is one of the many affiliate programs that compete with Google AdSense and previous reports show that it pays well. **but only if you know how to use it**. You can have thousands of pages and get AdSense using the SSI or Frontpage “include” page… or manually install AdSense on multiple sites. Isn’t it a lot of work to change all that to test run a new system? It’s too much work… so don’t do it. Pick a specific page or section, set up an AdSense channel for that section, check the payout for a few days – then try something like Chitika. The best Chitika pages are product pages and the best ads that serve where you choose a keyword / product to be published on your page (yes, you can do that with Chitika). Check out Chitika’s tips here first and then run your own test.

**This could be the most profitable thing you’ve done since signing up for Adsense.**
