Greenhouse Roof Styles

There are several greenhouse roof styles available. I am always asked what the difference is. Well, some will give you a little bit more head room, and some may give you a little bit more room to hang plants, but really the basic difference is just the looks.

· Straight eave or gable style – This is basically the same roof style as a traditional or ranch style house. It is a triangle shape if you look at it from the end. There is a simple mathematical formula to calculate the long side of the roof, say if you want to buy a shade cloth. You will need to know the width of the greenhouse and the sidewall height and the peak height. You take the width of half of the greenhouse in inches and square it. You take the peak height and subtract the sidewall height. Take this measurement in inches and square it and add it to the number you had before. You then take the square root of this addition and that is the length of your greenhouse roof on one side. To figure the whole roof, you just multiply by two.

· Curved eave roof – This is just what it sounds like. You may find this in a pipe frame with polyfilm or polycarbonate on it. Or, you may find it in an aluminum frame with glass or polycarbonate. You may need to calculate the size on this to replace polyfilm, polycarbonate or for a shade cloth. The easiest way to do this is to apply a tape measure to the frame and simply measure. There is no simple calculation because some of these just aren’t true half circles.

· Gambrel Shaped – This is also called a barn style roof. It is comprised of multiple angles forming a peak. The best was to calculate size on this is also with a tape measure. These are not all that common and are typically found in a resin (or plastic) frame.

The straight eave styles are available in several different roof pitches. Typically you will see a 5 on 12, 8 on 12 or 12 on 12 pitch. What this tells you is the number of inches that the roof drops in a 12″ distance. A 5 on 12 roof pitch will drop 5″ for every foot that the roof goes out. A 12 on 12 pitch has a 45 degree angle at the peak of the greenhouse.
