Need a Jaundice Home Remedy?

Infant jaundice is a common condition in babies, and in fact about 70% of newborns show some of its symptoms. Most of the treatments for jaundice in babies are simple and can be easily done at home. Only in rare cases is treatment for aggressive jaundice necessary.

Susun Weed in the Childbearing Year has an excellent section on infant jaundice and its treatment. Below I will summarize his best advice.

Infant jaundice is a condition that appears as yellow discoloration of the whites of the baby’s eyes and a yellow rash on the skin from the baby’s head down to the toes.

Jaundice occurs due to the breakdown of extra red blood cells associated with changes in the form of your baby receiving oxygen from the placenta to provide him with his own oxygen. Bilirubin is a byproduct of this breakdown process, and when it is reabsorbed and circulated it yellows the skin and eyes.

WARNING: A bilirubin level of 12 or more that continues to increase after the third day and the baby is dehydrated and lethargic is a sign of pathological jaundice. This is a condition that can be associated with blood group incompatibility or a damaged liver and the help of an experienced doctor is very necessary for the effective treatment of jaundice in babies in this condition. If left untreated this type of infant jaundice can lead to brain damage.

The other two types of infant jaundice, physiologic jaundice and breast milk jaundice require little or no treatment and will disappear in a few weeks on their own. There are simple baby jaundice treatments that you can use to support your baby during this time.

The first is just nursing. Even in the case of breast milk jaundice, your milk helps build up gut bacteria that help bind and flush out broken red blood cells. Also the extra protein in milk protects the brain from damage while the bilirubin level is high.

Sunlight will help break down bilirubin. So another effective treatment for infant jaundice is to undress your baby and, while covering his eyes, bathe him in the morning or afternoon sun for five minutes.

If you are breastfeeding, the mother can drink infusions of one of the many plants as a treatment for infant jaundice. After that, the baby will get the benefits of vegetables through breast milk. Recommended herbs to try are catnip, comfrey leaf, agrimony or dandelion root.

A typical infusion is one ounce of dried herb to one liter of water and the liquor is allowed to steep for at least four hours before being strained and drunk. Dandelion root infusion is bound to be bitter, and Susun Weed recommends adding salt to make the drink tolerable.

Cheladonium 3x is the recommended homeopathic treatment for infant jaundice. Be sure to use this only homeopathically, not in herbal form.

Breast milk jaundice is very rare and its symptoms include yellow skin and eyes, a bilirubin level of up to 20, and an active, breastfeeding baby. It is thought that steroids in breast milk sometimes inhibit the enzymes that break down red blood cells. This type of jaundice can last for up to two months.

As long as your baby is still active and breastfeeding strongly there is no need to worry too much, and there is certainly NO need to stop breastfeeding. This condition will resolve itself without switching to formula milk and removing close breastfeeding can make it difficult for the baby to have jaundice.

If you suspect breast milk jaundice you can stop breastfeeding for a short time (no more than 48 hours) to see if the bilirubin level decreases without breast milk. This is not a recommended treatment for infant jaundice, but a test to determine if this is what you are dealing with.

Treat breast milk with the infant jaundice treatment described above or try increasing the enzymatic activity in your baby’s liver and intestines with fresh wheat grass juice. Give the baby 20 drops daily or supplement with your milk by drinking up to two ounces daily.

So, if your baby shows the usual symptoms of yellow eyes and skin, first rule out pathological jaundice and then take a deep breath and relax, knowing that the only real treatment for baby jaundice is the measures you choose to support your baby while he/she breaks down and activate those red blood cells.
