Lotus 1-2-3 Vs Excel Vs Google Docs & Spreadsheets?

At their release in the early 80’s Microsoft Excel and Lotus 1-2-3 offered similar products rated both for quality and efficiency. Each of them associated themselves with different systems that determined their place in the market for the next two decades. It seems we may be starting another turn of events with the availability of free web-hosted applications such as Google Docs & Spreadsheets and Zoho Office.

Lotus was not the only spreadsheet program in the early 80’s but it was the most effective. Following its release in 1983 Lotus became an innovator in the use of television consumer advertising. Things have looked great in Lotus for many years because of its speed and its similarity to the VisiCalc model, including the A1 number and letter cells, and the slash-menu structure. It had no bugs and bypassed the slow DOS screen input/output. In addition to being a spreadsheet it also features integrated charting/graphing and data functions. Hence, its name 1-2-3 which refers to its three main abilities.

The data is sorted for each rectangle defined within the data command in one or two columns per rectangle. One can justify the text in a specific list of paragraphs allowing it to function as a primitive word processor. It contained easy-to-use features such as keyboard-driven pop-up menus and command-key commands. Most notable for the Lotus user was the sensitive help menu accessed by the F1 key.

Version 2.0 introduced macros and extensions. This has resulted in third-party vendors being able to sell macros and add-on packages for a variety of complete word processors for dedicated financial worksheets. Version 2.0 contained macros with syntax and commands and a list of variable expressions that were similar in complexity to the advanced BASIC interpreter. In later versions Lotus 1-2-3 also supports multiple worksheets. Lotus also made a 1-2-3 version of the HP 200LX, a palmtop released by Hewlett-Packard.

Excel was first released for Mac in 1985 and then for Windows in 1987. Compared to Lotus, Excel’s introduction provided all the power of number crunching and collapsing menus and WYSIWYG formatting. These two features make Excel very easy to use. In 1988 Excel sold 1-2-3 and began to solidify its position as a leading developer of PC software. Microsoft has proven to be an ambitious competitor, maintaining valuable products and releasing new versions almost every two years. Excel also retained its Mac release. The current version for Windows is Excel 12 or Microsoft Office Excel 2007. The current version for Mac OS X is Microsoft Excel 2008.

Looking back, it seems that in 1982 when Microsoft released a spreadsheet program titled Multiplan it was popular with CP/M programs but MS-DOS programs loved Lotus 1-2-3. MS-DOS clearly succeeded as the main operating system, therefore, Lotus 1-2-3 as the most important spreadsheet program. In the late 80’s Microsoft introduced Excel, the first spreadsheet for Windows graphical interface. Lotus focused on IBM OS/2. Windows usage increased with Windows 3.0 but Lotus had already lost its lead. Excel has been the industry leader in computer spreadsheet software [http://www.thesoftwarespot.com]. IBM continues to sell 1-2-3 as part of the Lotus SmartSuite office suite.

Trends are also changing with the availability of free hosted web applications such as Google Docs & Spreadsheets and Zoho Office. This will certainly provide a challenge for Excel to maintain its prestigious position however; it will not be a clear comparison as internet applications are a different product. They don’t mimic Excel and 1-2-3 but expand on them. They use the power of web collaboration, instant response, mashups, live data and content search. No one will be interested to see what Microsoft’s doing in the future!
