Real Solutions for Your New Year’s Resolutions
The older we get, the faster time seems to pass. New Year’s Eve has always been an exciting time of year. It’s when friends gather to celebrate, when we reflect on the past year, and ponder the possibilities of “what could have been” in the next 12 months. This is the time when many people are forced to make New Year’s resolutions which often turn out to be empty promises. The question is, do you take your goals seriously or do you create them because society says you should?
Many times we set goals, but don’t think enough about how to achieve them. Sometimes a goal seems so big or scary that we avoid looking at it. Sometimes we don’t have a clear idea of what we want and avoid getting started. Whatever the reason for procrastination, making the same goals every year that you never finish affects your confidence and self-esteem. So let’s make a pact this year that our goals will be realistic, achievable, and realistic.
Identify Your Vision
So how do we make goals? We start with a vision that focuses on the big picture. What do you want? If you could do or be anything in the world what would it be? Look within and develop a list of areas in your life that you would like to change, such as personal relationships, work, weight, or self-image. This list will guide you to your goals. Write them down in a place you can return to often.
Make a Smart Plan
Keep in mind that a goal without a plan is just a dream. Goal setting is key to your success. Now that you know what you want, test it and see what realistically you can achieve in a month, 6 months, a year, 5 years. Break your goals down into small, achievable steps so they don’t become overwhelming. Write them down as your mini goals. Determine what it will take to achieve each step of the goal. Remember to make your goals SMART, Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely. What should you do? What should you be? How will you accomplish that? Yes, write everything down. Finally, put a due date next to each step. This is to hold you accountable and help you be realistic. Plan what you will do, when you will do it and how you will do it. Well, every time you meet your goal, reward yourself. In fact, part of your goal setting is to write down what your reward will be for each sub-goal when (not if) you achieve it.
Find Support Resources
Find a partner who will hold you accountable. The best partner can be someone who has the same goal as you to motivate each other or a coach who has no other goals than to see you succeed. Friends and family members may not be the best choice. Although they love you, seeing you achieve your goals may make you different now. People who have known you for a long time may be uncomfortable with change and may try to stand in your way.
Create a NOTICE BOARD
Have fun with it. Use your creativity. Yes, you have. Buy poster board. Get out all your magazines. Cut out the pictures and words. Browse through your photo albums; bring out images that are meaningful to you. Paste all the pictures and words on the board. What you need here are images and words that will inspire you and remind you of your goals. An inspiration board helps visually strengthen your vision and keep you on track.
Write down each of your steps. When you set your goals, write them down and create an action plan. Although that was a great first step, it is not enough. It also helps to keep a daily journal. Keep track of what you did, how you did it, and how it worked or didn’t work. What did you learn? What has been your daily success? What are your proudest moments? Also, don’t forget to write down how you feel. By the way, you can use this journal not only to read from it, but also to review your achievements. Go back to your journal when you feel stressed, stuck, or unmotivated and read it again. This is a great way to build your confidence and see how far you can go.
Finally, wear a rubber band around your wrist. This is not a game. Every morning review your goal journal and assess where you need to be and what you need to do. During the day if you find yourself drifting away from your goals, rip the rubber band. Yes, it will sting a little. That’s the point. Use a rubber band as a simple reminder to keep you on track.
Now that you have all these tricks it’s time to get started. The New Year promises to be inspiring, exciting, and productive. Don’t forget, you are not alone. If you’re having trouble, you can always seek expert advice to get you started or to help you along the way.
