Painting Business – 13 Point Checklist of Essential Tools Most Needed to Start a Painting Business

If you are thinking of starting a commercial or residential painting business you will only need basic and inexpensive equipment to get started. You can buy more equipment as more functions come with your lower payments. Here is a list of the most important painting business tools needed to get started.

.) Standard Cage Frame – Also known as a paint roller. Wooster and Purdy both have sturdy, commercial-grade cage frames that are sold at most professional paint stores.

.) Extension Pole – Get yourself a good medium fiberglass extension pole to roll up walls and ceilings.

.) Wall-Sander – I always sand the walls and ceilings before I roll them. Cleans cable ducts and anything else that needs to be dismantled to smooth walls and ceilings.

.) Roller Bucket – I use a Wooster’s roller bucket. It is long, square and has a lid. It is made of durable plastic and has a much better balance than a paint tray and washes easily. You must have it.

). They will last for years.

.) Step Ladder – A standard 5 foot wooden ladder works perfectly for most homes. If I need a 6-foot ladder I have an aluminum one for that. Most of the time I need my 5-footer and I’m only 5’6″ so there you go.

.) 16′ Extension Ladder – Great for stairwells or ranch-style outdoor activities. I use my 16 foot extension ladder more than any other size. I also have 20′ and 24′ extension ladders, but I can’t go without a small 16-footer. 8.) Drop cloths – I like to use the runner type the most. They are inexpensive, easy to carry and can be easily moved around the room. I also have 9 x 12’s on hand.

.) Fluorescent Light – Interior painting without fluorescent light is almost impossible, especially on a cloudy day. Fluorescent light is a nice white light that is great for painting and shows the colors in their true form.

.) Tool Bucket – An empty 5-gallon bucket makes a great tool bucket. I keep my pliers, hammer, razor blades, caulk gun, etc., in my tool bucket.

.) Small Fan – I bought a $30 small fan made by Stanley Tools from Walmart. It dries walls and ceilings quickly so you can get back to work cutting and moving around the room without getting wet.

.) Drywall compound – I hate Spackle. It shines under the paint jobs. I use the Sheetrock brand of 90 minute dry cleaner available at Lowes or other hardware stores for about $11 a bag. It will last me a year. It is a powder formula and is easy to mix right at work with water and a small bucket. This way you don’t have to carry a heavy 5-gallon pail around with you that can freeze during the winter and you can get more pieces out of it over time.

.) Caulk Gun – I use painters caulk all the time to fill small gaps between wood, trim and walls. Most paint stores have it on hand. I use the 35 year old indoor/outdoor model.

So there you have it. If you are thinking of starting your own painting business and want to know how much it will cost to start this list will help you. I think everything on this list is under $300. If you already have a stepladder and a small extension ladder, this will cut startup costs down significantly.
