Making Your Purpose Your Business Step #1 – Discovering Your Purpose
There is no such thing as a “small” job. Every activity in our community contributes to our professional lifestyles and wellness. From the store clerk to the business manager, each position is a complex part of our world. We rely on these activities without realizing their value or contribution to our daily activities. Each person has a place there and each person has their own purpose. The key is to find out and take the time to find out what exactly you can do to contribute to the world.
Even more challenging is that many times we are shown serving multiple roles in our lives outside of our “purpose”. We are parents, workers, spouses, and children. All of this requires time and effort in our daily lives. What is important however is that we balance our time and our roles to maximize our inner purpose and potential. It takes time and effort to find your goals and ambitions, but it’s a desire that shouldn’t be ignored.
A common excuse for neglecting our talents is that we are too busy with other things. When in fact we have probably overextended our time and possessions. Take a moment to sit down and notice what is taking up your time in your life. And after you have made this list, make a column and note what is the most important thing, what exactly is “must do”. Be sure to note how much personal time you get outside of all your other responsibilities. Start small and see if you can allocate at least half an hour or an hour of your time in a day dedicated to you without distractions. Use this time to evaluate the direction of your life. Are you doing what you want to do now? If so, what can you do to further your progress? If not, what do you want to do?
Use free thinking in your assessment. Free thinking means there are no limits. You can dream to be whatever you want to be. Think about what you would like to do whether you were paid or not. Think about what makes you feel good as a person. Maybe you like art or you like to work outside. Compare your desire with your current life situation. Are you close to your goals or far away?
Once you have fulfilled your wishes, write notes in a special notebook dedicated only to you. It’s great to see your ideas take shape when they hit the page and it’s a great way to check your progress on days when you might feel like you’re not there. And you’ll need a notebook for the other steps too. Feel free to customize this notebook and make it your own.
Don’t feel guilty about taking this special time for yourself. Understand that your commitment to yourself will affect others. By improving yourself, you become better at all your roles and commitments. It is when we stop listening to our reality and the nature of our lives that we are able to create abundance in our environment and those around us. What you are doing is investing in someone’s foundation.
If you only have half an hour or an hour a day, make a list of the things you want to accomplish in that time. So when the clock starts ticking you are ready to be productive and work towards your goals. Time management is a good practice from the start. So when you find out what your purpose is, you will be ready to make the most of every moment you have.
After you’ve figured out where you want to go or what direction you want to take in your life, then take the time to research… research… research. Research is an important part of developing your career plan. Go to the library or do some online research on a topic you are interested in pursuing. Find out what tools you will need to start your mission. Will you need additional education or training? Will you need a business loan? Or will you use your personal equipment to get started? Don’t let financial issues stop your progress. Remember that knowledge is money here. There are ways to achieve your goal for little to no money.
Remember real life goals take real life work. Sure some people get lucky, but often others have to really dedicate themselves to their success. Keep an open mind during this self-evaluation and the rest will follow. Most importantly, be patient with yourself as you would be with anyone else. Second, persistence is key to the formula for success. You have to be willing to make a deep commitment from day one to yourself. Your opinions may change direction along the way, but at least you continue to reach satisfaction.
To summarize the task of this step, write it down, take a pen and paper and make a list of your ambitions or things you are good at and enjoy. What do you feel passionate about? What would you like to do even if you weren’t paid? Second, be honest with yourself. Don’t feel ashamed or guilty about recognizing your talents…after all, they are there to be recognized. It is up to you to release them and share them with others. Create your purpose, your business.
