Do You Really Want to Reduce Cooking Time?
Cooking is probably one of the oldest or perhaps most man-made jobs. My guess is that someone would have brought in something to cook when they were hunters and had to eat meat. In my mind, thousands of years ago, a caveman would have spent days hunting and trying to find food to survive. His life would have revolved around thinking of ways to support himself. As he appeared, the exchange system must have entered where he could exchange and find time to do other things. Nowadays, food is taken for granted and is a small part of human life. The way it is today, I’m not sure it’s considered an important part of life. I think we’ve taken the idea of takeout and bartering too far where we expect someone to almost prepare our food and finish or finish, just burn it. We found so many other things to do and lost focus on the most important aspect of life – food. Well, I’m not a foodie but the reason I believe that food is the most important thing in a person’s life is because it determines the state of your mental and physical health. As they say, health is wealth, and this is highly valued when it is not worth it!
Going back to the cooking style of the old days, I am reminded of one of those TV shows that featured a celebrity chef visiting India and cooking local food in a traditional way. He cooked the meat in the pit where the fire was full. The meat was nicely wrapped in a banana leaf with all the spices loaded onto the meat. The banana leaf should keep the meat moist. My trip to my hometown reminded me of another traditional cooking method – the clay pot! The sight of the ladies cooking with clay pots over the fire outside the house enticed me to join them. Another common practice involved boiling certain foods. For example, in South Indian cooking, certain berries were allowed to ferment overnight and the microbes that fermented the food aided digestion. I could go on with this custom process but have you seen what they have in common? Time! They all take time to cook but what is even more amazing is that my ancestors who followed traditional cooking methods lived a long and healthy life. As our way of life has changed, so has our way of cooking. There is probably no home without a microwave oven and few homes without food for reheating or food stored in the refrigerator. A microwave oven I’m sure is considered a blessing by many people who are busy with work and family. It’s a challenge and so am I. I struggle to find enough time to cook good food and buy a big microwave. And what do I think about it now? Well, here’s a summary of the claims I’ve seen on other websites:
1. The general advice is not to heat the baby’s milk (breast or formula) in the microwave. The obvious reason is that uneven heating can burn the baby’s mouth but also the milk is changed and some important parts of the milk such as vitamins are lost.
2. Scientists named Hertel and Blanc are said to have discovered that microwaved food causes a decrease in hemoglobin levels. They are said to have discovered that large amounts of radiolytic compounds are produced by microwaved food and that these cause a breakdown of the blood and immune system. They were stopped from publishing their results by certain powerful organizations.
3. Russian scientists are said to have discovered that microwave energy causes changes in the cells of food, be it vegetables or meat or milk, and creates carcinogenic structures. It also suppresses the immune system and makes it harder for the body to fight cancer cells.
4 Who would have thought that if it was that bad for people, it would have been banned. But it is said that regulatory bodies such as the FDA, insist on more or microwave power that does not leak and harm people nearby and one of the popular benefits of using it is that it is less oil and no water so it is healthy and many nutrients are preserved.
After reading these alarming findings, I think it is suicidal to continue eating microwaved food. Better to be safe than sorry. So, as I finish this article, I have decided to sell my microwave oven. Instead here are a few things I plan to do…
1. Plan my meals for the week so I have all the ingredients. Wherever possible prepare in advance such as chopping vegetables, preparing and refrigerating garlic paste, making a basic gravy sauce and refrigerating.
2. Cook large batches over the weekend and freeze a few portions for my husband and I. Thaw it in the fridge in the morning I need it and heat it on the stove in the evening.
3. Use my clean oven whenever possible and try to reduce fatty foods by baking instead of frying.
4. Use traditional methods like cooking in a clay pot which tends to add flavor as well.
While it’s entirely up to you to decide if you want to cut down on cooking time and go the modern route, I refuse to put microwave recipes on my food blog.
