Venom & RipTide: A Guide to Aftermarket Longboard Bushings
It can be difficult to find a bushing setup that works best for you as a rider. With so many different brands to choose from, it can be difficult to distinguish the quality products from the poor quality products. Here is a brief overview of the bushing formulas offered by the two leading brands in the industry: Venom and RipTide. Between these two features, it’s a pretty good guarantee that you’ll find the right combination of aftermarket bushings to make your setup feel perfect. Both are leading brands of aftermarket urethane products, and have something unique to offer in each formula and shape.
Venom bushings are undoubtedly the most widely used brand on the market due to their quality and reliability. Between the HPF and SHR formulas in all the different shapes they offer, there is something for every rider from beginners to advanced.
HPF for Venom: HPF formula bushings are one of the most common choices for beginner to intermediate riders. While these bushings are the undisputed favorite of the “advanced” downhill community, their ratio of rebound (or center back) versus lean (squishiness) gives them a predictable edge that makes learning the basics of turning, carving, and blasting. the hills are very accessible. At the same time, they are the go-to option for advanced skill level ski trails around the world.
Venom SHR: While often overlooked, the Venom SHR bushings are an excellent choice for very low riders who want more responsiveness in their setup, or for cruisers / carvers / slalom riders who want their turns and carves to “explode”. With a high rebound formula, the SHRs can rebound aggressively in the center, while also having a “soft” and “hard” feel. With the Venom SHR’s, what durometer does the rider normally ride in the HPF formula feel about the soft one durometer option (eg 91a SHR feels just as soft as 87a HPF).
RipTide is a company with a loyal following. They offer a wide range of urethane formulas and bushing styles that can be used for many riding styles and ability levels. While there are plenty of options to choose from, any avid RipTide rider will tell you that it’s worth finding out which one is right for you. RipTide is widely sought after because of its quality and high quality.
RipTide APS: The APS formula offers a fun alternative in terms of rebound to the Riptide formula options. While these bushings provide the same center return and stability as the Venom FPS formula, they provide a “softer”, more “turny” feel perfect for riders who enjoy these features. The APS formula is one of the net options for beginner riders because of its happy balance between rebound and compression. However, the APS formula is very popular with advanced riders, indicating that APS bushings are very versatile.
RipTide WFB: This formula features a self-lubricating compound, which is why there is some kind of residue outside of the bush. This lubrication creates less resistance, and therefore provides a thinner depth and faster shifting. The WFB offers a lower rebound than the APS, making it ideal for riders who want deep wet turns. For this reason, the WFB is a good choice for intermediate to advanced riders who want to have more control over their bushes.
RipTide Krank: This is the ultimate formula of RipTide. Compared to APS and WFB, this formula will convert less and have a faster, more responsive center return. When mounted free for cruising and carving, their high rebound formula will compress easily but return to center quickly, making the formula ideal for pumping and high power carving. When pressed down firmly for downhill applications, this formula provides great stability and a quick transition from turn to tuck. Generally, these bushings are best suited for advanced riders or those who like to carve/turn.
On Mixing and Matching Brands/Formulas:
A bushing connoisseur who wants to dial in each setting as precisely as possible may decide to explore a mix of bushings brands and formulas to find the perfect amount of lean to bind them. This can be a very rewarding process if you try it right, but it can also be a difficult process. If you decide to go this route, it is recommended to always place the top bushing board, and the direction side of the rebound bushing. This will allow the turn to initiate more easily at the beginning of the turn, and provide more resistance as the rider leans deeper into the turn.
From low rebound to high rebound, the above bushings options are as follows: RipTide WFB, RipTide APS, Venom HPF, Venom SHR, Riptide Krank.
Good luck Testing is the best way to find out if a plan is working!
