Formula 1 Flashback: Memorable Moments From Monte Carlo

20 May 2014

The Monaco Grand Prix is the most famous and spectacular race on the Formula 1 calendar. Over the years the street circuit has delivered jaw-dropping, non-stop action against the breathtaking backdrop of the streets of Monte Carlo. Without fail the race moves upwards year after year; and just when you think Monaco has shown you all its tricks, this Grand Prix manages to surprise and amaze you again. As we head into the 72nd weekend of the Principal’s Drunken Race, we’re taking a look back at some of the race’s most memorable moments.

Memorable moments from Monte Carlo

1929

The first Monaco Grand Prix was held, organized by Antony Noghès under the “Automobile Club de Monaco”. William Grover-Williams of France won.

1931

Louis Chiron became the first and only Monegasque to win in Monaco. Starting from the 11th position on the grid, the local hero showed his power in the Bugatti, finishing around four minutes ahead of the second Luigi Fagioli.

1949

The event was canceled due to the death of Prince Louis II of Monaco.

1950

This race is included in the calendar for the first FIA World Championship for Drivers. It was a notable race as it was the first time the Grand Chelem (or Grand Slam) was achieved in Formula 1. Juan-Manual Fangio achieved this by taking pole position, setting the fastest lap, leading each lap and winning the Grand Prix. .

1955

Louis Chiron scored in his last home race, finishing sixth. At 55 years and 292 days, he was the oldest driver to compete in a Formula 1 Grand Prix and still holds that record today.

1963-1969

Graham Hill’s reign saw him crowned “King of Monaco” after winning five times in seven years (1963-1965 and 1968-1969).

1970

Jack Brabham suffered a dramatic loss at the last corner on the final lap when he crashed into the barrier, handing victory to Jochen Rindt.

1982

Arguably the most eventful race in Formula 1 history at Monaco was the 1982 Grand Prix. After qualifying quickly, Rene Arnoux led the pack before losing control of his Renault and spinning on Lap 15. Teammate Alain Prost led for only two laps, when he lost control exiting the front chicane and crashed into the barrier. During the final lap, the lead changed six times until Ricardo Patrese took the victory after restarting his car in the second last lap.

1984-1993

This season saw what is considered the greatest rivalry in Formula 1 history between Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna, and the pair ruled Monaco for ten years. Perhaps the most competitive race in the sport, the rain-soaked 1984 Grand Prix was red flagged at the end of lap 32 with Senna overtaking Prost before the finish line. But Senna’s “victory” was short-lived; positions were taken on the previous lap where Prost led, giving the Frenchman his first of four wins in Monaco. Sena would eventually win a record six times; including the heart-stopping 1992 Grand Prix battle with Nigel Mansell where he crossed the line first by half a second.

1996

The wet weather caused chaos on the track, and a new Formula 1 record was set when only three cars finished the race (Olivier Panis, David Coulthard and Johnny Herbert).

2006

Michael Schumacher, sitting on the temporary pole as he reached the finish line, stopped his car in the middle of the Rascasse hairpin. The poor trick now forced all drivers to slow down, including his rival Fernando Alonso who was going faster than the German, and was looking to catch up. Schumacher claimed it was dangerous but race officials disagreed and started the race at the back of the grid. Alonso won comfortably.

2013

Nico Rosberg wins on home soil for the first time (a German driver who was born and raised in Monaco and now lives in the Principality), thirty years after the first victory of his father Keke and the only victory here. Nico’s win makes them the first and now only father and son to both win in Monaco.
