Figuring Candle Burn Time and How Much Scent is Needed

To indicate how much fragrance is needed in your wax.

First let me explain some things and maybe spill some secrets of candle makers.

TWICE AHEAD!

THREE IN THE MIDDLE!

These are marketing principles designed to help sell candles.

In fact they are not true. Most candle waxes hold one ounce of fragrance per pound of wax. That’s why, they don’t exist anymore. That would be like putting 16 ounces in a 12-ounce container but with the smell and wax not coming out.

What happens if I put on three times more fragrance than the acne can hold?

Excess scent can seep into the bottom and sides of the candle. This can cause serious problems because many fragrances are so concentrated that they can burn or irritate your skin. We don’t want that to happen.

The scent will chemically bond with the wax, you cannot force more scent atoms to bind to the wax. At least not with the tools we use.

So here is the formula I stick to. You can try it yourself but be warned.

Let’s try a simple example. I have one pound of wax. All right, I need one ounce of fragrance. That’s easy enough but what if I have a candle that uses 1 pound 5 ounces of wax? That’s where the fun comes in.

I need to convert those 5 ounces into a fraction. It’s actually 5 parts out of 16 in total because there are 16 ounces in a pound.

So that would give us a fraction of 5/16

Now I have something to work with. I take that fraction and turn it into a whole number by dividing the bottom number 16 by the top number 5. This gives us .3125. I will say .3

So now we know 5 ounces equals .3, so we can say we have 1.3 pounds of wax. Now using the formula 1 ounce per pound we get 1.3 ounces of fragrance!

How to display the candle burn time

Figuring out how long your candle will burn is a simple task. You will have to do some simple tests. First, measure your candle. Note the difficulty.

Next light it and let it burn for an hour. When the hour is up, measure again. This will tell you how much wax was used in that hour.

For example, if we have a candle that weighs five ounces before it is lit, we light the candle and let it burn for one hour. The candle now weighs 4 ounces. So we use one ounce of that candle in one hour. If it burns 1 ounce per hour and there are 5 ounces in the candle, then the candle will last about 5 hours.
