Kirby Super Star – Dream Land Is Under Siege Again!
Dreamland is under siege again! Our hero, Kirby, is back to revive the rescue. King Dedede steals the Dream Food, but he’s not the only one! Dyna Blade, Meta Knight and a slew of other evil baddies are free and destroying the world.
Use any of Kirby’s awesome powers to create a “helper” to help you in battle. Or have a friend join you in two-player action by taking control of Kirby’s assistant. Help Kirby work through EIGHT challenging games filled with action and adventure. Enter the Spring Breeze Race, enter a foot race against King Dedede in the Gourmet Race and battle the winged warrior Dyna Blade.
Transfer your reaction skills to Megaton Punch and Samurai Kirby, then fight your way through the Great Cave Offensive, Meta Knight’s Revenge and Milky Way Wishes. Each game is unique AND some amazing extras are in store for you!
It’s a classic Kirby game and more in 8 fun games! The gameplay is fun and challenging at times. Everyone will enjoy controlling Kirby around Dreamland and beyond. You make your way by swallowing Kirby’s enemies and then using them as projectiles or you can power them if the swallowed enemy has one. There are a lot of powerful enemies, so you won’t be having the same old powers over and over again.
The power you get does more than one thing, for example: if you get a beam ability, you can shoot a beam every time, charge it with a powerful blast, grab an enemy and shoot them and make these green dots come out of them. the staff injures enemies. When you have power, you can also create an assistant based on the power you have. A companion will then help you in your quest and you can be controlled by the AI or your friend can control instead.
You can also regain energy and touch it to find it in other areas instead of absorbing and swallowing enemies. Kirby can fly, if you didn’t know that and if you want you can fly over things. When you’re underwater you can use some powers but otherwise you have special attacks underwater.
The levels are fun and the enemies are well thought out. The big bosses range from easy to very difficult and offer a good challenge while being fun at the same time. When Kirby stops flying he spits out a cloud of dust, which can damage enemies. Kirby can slide when running to hurt enemies.
Here’s a rundown of the games in Kirby Superstar featured in the instruction manual…
Spring Breeze – King DeDeDe has stolen all the food in Dreamland and once again it’s up to Kirby to stop him. Spring Breeze is a simple yet fun way to introduce new players to the world of Kirby. With the classic Kirby formula of swallowing enemies and stealing their energy, you make your way through 4 stages. Each has a boss you must fight. It’s not a challenge for most players but it’s a good way to sit back and have some classic Kirby fun.
Dyna Blade – A giant bird called Dyna Blade is threatening the world and guess who can do the work to stop it. Yes, that’s Kirby! Offering more levels, which will provide a greater challenge to players than Spring Breeze, Dyna Blade is a great Kirby game that is included in Kirby Superstar. There are also secrets, which I will let you discover for yourself.
Gourmet Race – After climbing a really long mountain to find valuable food lying at the top, Kirby discovers that King DeDeDe is on the mountain with him and is looking to take all the food. Kirby and King DeDeDe decide to have a scavenger hunt to see who can get it all. Basically you race King DeDeDe to the end of the stages and collect food while you’re at it. You can replay the time attack to try to beat your best times.
Big Cave Offensive – While on a picnic, Kirby falls into a hole and finds a big cave that is said to contain millions of dollars in treasure. Kirby must go out into the cave and collect all the treasures. Well you don’t have to collect them all but if you want 100% in your game file you should collect them all. The Great Cave Offensive poses a challenge to even the most skilled players because some treasures can be difficult to find and find.
Return of MetaKnight – The evil MetaKnight and his team are determined to conquer the dream world with their giant flying ship. Naturally Kirby jumps into the warpstar and the action heads. MetaKnight’s Revenge can be challenging for humans and has a great story. It still uses the classic Kirby formula but more surprises and challenges await you.
Milky Way Wishes – The sun and moon have a fight that causes day and night in Dreamland to mix. Guide Kirby to many different planets in an attempt to return things to normal. Instead of power swallowing and copying, Milky Way Wishes is different. You get powers and you get them permanently. You can then switch between different powers any time you want and this idea puts a new fun twist on Kirby action. Milky Way Wishes is a lot of fun and a lot of fun at times.
Megaton Punch – This mini game is fun but very simple. You can play 1 or 2 players and choose your level. First you set Kirby’s energy meter by pressing any button when the energy meter is full, then you press any button again when two flying cursors meet directly to form one and finally you press any button when the hanging pendulum is inside the ring. Now you have your score and if it is greater than your opponents you win. It’s that simple.
Samurai Kirby – As another mini game you choose the number of players and difficulty level in Samurai Kirby. This game is a test of reflexes and requires you to press any button as soon as you see “!”. Whoever presses it first wins. Don’t press any button too early because you will be kicked out if you do it too soon. Samurai Kirby offers plenty of challenge and fun.
Some of the best on the SNES, Kirby has never looked better. Most of the enemies look good and are well detailed. The food you use to restore Kirby’s health is also very good. The background is amazing and shows the exciting world of Dreamland well. All the movements on the screen look great; Kirby and enemies. The cropped images are near perfect and well defined. Kirby Superstar is one of the most graphically outstanding games on the SNES.
Everyone loves listening to Kirby music, right? It is pleasant to the ears and goes well with the game. Some levels may have mediocre music but most of it is much better. The sounds are also great and match the actions cleanly and near perfectly. If you hit something with a certain force the sound you think will be heard will be heard. When you’re invincible, you get fast paced music and who can forget Kirby’s dance music. Everyone loves a Kirby dance, or at least I would think so.
The controls in Kirby Superstar are really good and easy to learn. You use the D-Pad to move Kirby and you can double tap the D-Pad right or left to dash. You can also press on the D-Pad to enter the door and press down to make Kirby land/dive. While pressing down and B at the same time will cause the star hero to slide. Pressing the B button will make Kirby jump while pressing it continuously will cause Kirby to fly.
Your flying time is unlimited so don’t worry about falling. The Y button is probably the most important in the entire game as it causes Kirby to swallow enemies, which he can then spit out at other enemies or use to get an ability. The Y button can be used to fire air bullets while flying and use a water gun while underwater. When you have power you can use the A button to make an assistant and if you don’t have power you can use the A button to drop the assistant.
The L and R buttons cause Kirby to defend himself against most but not all enemies and obstacles. First stop the game and if you want to reset it you have to press Start, Select, L and R buttons at the same time. You can also use the A button to turn towards Kirby or self-destruct if you’re a helper and you can’t get too far away from Kirby but this isn’t too much of a problem.
With eight games in one and mini-games, you’ll be playing Kirby Superstar for a long time. Collecting all the treasures in the Great Cave Offensive and all the power in the Milky Way Wishes will take time. If you have a second player to help out, you’ll beat these games over and over again for the fun of the multiplayer feature.
So that’s Kirby Super Star in a nutshell. I highly recommend this game to anyone with a SNES, and I’m really disappointed that we didn’t see a GBA port or something, but oh well. They took what was good about the original Kirby game, added some mini games, made it about finding all the secrets to find the true ending, and made it two player. What more could you want?
Despite the release of Kirby Crystal Shards for the N64, I think this is the best Kirby game ever. This one did everything perfectly, but the first one was even more innovative. If anyone has a chance, they should try this game, they definitely won’t regret it!
