Interstitial Cystitis, Plumb Square And Level
There are many articles that explain what Interstitial Cystitis (IC) is and the treatment. If you are reading this article you know what it is; I will simply describe it as chronic inflammation of the wall of the bladder, with rupture of the bladder, and sometimes excruciating pain; no definitive cure has been found. It affects both men and women.
There are many other treatments that have been discovered by people with this disease themselves and they are working for them and they are getting relief. You try and there is no relief. Basically they ‘work for themselves’. It may be because everyone’s chemistry is different. This may be why not everyone has the same symptoms.
Seven years ago I was walking and suddenly I was seized with severe abdominal pain in my pelvic/groin area. I couldn’t even walk back home I was in pain. I got into the hot tub and felt a little relaxed. A few days later the pain struck again and for a long time; I went back to the hot tub, again temporary relief.
It was 2 years before I was diagnosed with IC. I was first diagnosed with Colon Cancer and a ruptured uterus, bladder, and rectum. We actually thought the pain was from Human Cancer. I had surgery, the cancer is gone, the pain is still there.
I did some research and decided that the IC might be the problem. My urologist said it was an ‘outdated diagnosis’ and didn’t believe it. After doing the Cystoscopy, he calmly told me that my bladder was swollen and rotten in many places. He also took biopsies to make sure it wasn’t cancer.
Conventional medicine did not work. I tried other treatments, and a strict diet. What helped me the most was a hot bath and getting adjustments from a chiropractor. I couldn’t go to the gym every day because of the pain. Cranberry juice that worked for urinary tract infections made IC worse.
Another option is Botox injections into the bladder. It paralyzes the bladder to prevent bladder rupture, a source of pain. I didn’t think of it this way, not me.
Plumb Square and Level as the Best Aid for Pain Relief
My husband was a contractor and was disabled due to a back injury. He often refers to the local Plumb Square and Level as the best pain reliever.
I thought about what he had said and looked at my stance, it was definitely not what he would call Plumb Square and Level. I straightened up and returned to my old military posture, head up, shoulders back, stomach and buttocks tucked in. I couldn’t believe the difference, not the cure but the difference.
I started noticing what work seemed to help, what made it worse, what I was eating, and what my system was doing.
My biggest relief is staying in the Plumb Square and Staircase area when I’m standing, walking, or sitting. I also take B6 and Magnesium every morning. During flare-ups I would take it every 4 hours. If I am going to do heavy work I will take it before engaging in the work as a preventative measure.
Keep a Journal: write everything down
- Any other medical problems you have
- Food and drink
- The work you do
- What makes it worse
- What makes it better
- When and how often you urinate
- When you are in pain it explodes
Aloe Vera juice
Aloe Vera soothes and softens the mucous membranes. It seems to bring the body into balance and helps reduce bladder inflammation and calm bladder spasms.
Reduce Salt and Acids
Salt and vinegar are the ones that cause problems. If your bladder is swollen and inflamed, salt and vinegar won’t help. Think of it as pouring salt into an open wound. OH!
An acidic body causes many health problems. Try to reduce the number of acidic products you use. Try reducing or cutting out different foods and see if it makes a difference.
An emergency measure I will do when nothing else helps is to take ½ teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in a glass of water, sit for a minute and then drink. This usually starts to loosen the bladder lock after 20 minutes.
Sodium baking soda, salt, I stopped using it. Plumb Square and Level works in its place. I still go back to my old self sometimes and will notice the onset of spasms. I go to Plumb Square and Level and the pain subsides.
Kegel for men and women
Kegel exercises also help, men, for you too, as they strengthen the bladder.
Plain constipation or IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) can cause IC; if the rectum descends or prolapses, this can cause IC. Uterine prolapse or if the uterus lies in the bladder can cause it.
I had surgery every few months to make sure the cancer had not returned as I refused chemo and radiation. Surgery causes rupture of the IC. After surgery I go to the chiropractor for adjustments and cold laser therapy. Cold laser therapy helps quickly as it heals the inflammation and helps the entire area to heal faster. The cold laser also helps with IC inflammation and reduces bladder spasms.
I have a farm and ride around (bounce) on a big tractor and lift over 25 lbs. These two things will cause pain in the back, and the IC is inflamed. Sometimes it hurts enough that I have to go in to fix it. My L3-4 and S1-2 are out of place, even if it’s just a little bit out of place, the IC kicks in. These bones house the nerve roots to the bladder.
When this happens I freeze it until I can go in and see my chiropractor; change and remove the ice every 30 minutes until the pain subsides.
If I put ice on my lower back and the pain doesn’t stop and my back doesn’t feel anywhere, the next step is heat. I’m going to put a heating pad to sit on and put it on my lower back. I have another hot spot above my lower abdomen and pelvic/groin area. Relief comes anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours depending on how severe the pain is. Another option is to get into a hot tub if you have one.
Whether you’re driving a car, riding a motorcycle, riding a lawnmower, or anything else, try to stay in the Plumb Square and Level area to minimize problems.
Research shows that lifting weights can cause bladder spasms. Find out what your weight limit is.

- Find your ideal weight and stick to it
- Apply ice to the lower back for 30 minutes and continue until it hurts
- Heating pads to sit on, lower back and lower abdomen or soak in a hot tub

Remember that we all have different chemical makeups, not all of these may work for you. The Plumb Square and Level seems to work for everyone I know who has tried it.
You should try different treatments, record what you took and what worked, and what didn’t. Ultimately you have to figure out what works best for your system.
