This PMS Has Nothing to Do With a Time of the Month

Over the years, I’ve found myself at a loss when talking to clients, especially women, about PMS symptoms. Most people hear the letters PMS and think (should I say?) Premenstrual syndrome, although a natural biological activity, is still a kind of taboo. This blog though has nothing to do with that type of PMS, but it is related to the colors used in print.

In the 1950s, a commercial printer hired Lawrence Herbert, a fresh chemical graduate who simplified and changed ink colors and pigments. He eventually bought a division of the company, renamed it Pantone and began developing the PMS, or Pantone Matching System. The idea behind the system is to allow anyone to match a specific color by calculating each color in their guide and providing the ink mix used to match the specific color. Certain ink colors, of which there are 1,114, are created by mixing specific percentages of the 14 common ink colors.

For example, if your company has chosen baby blue as their corporate color you can choose PMS 3975C from the color fan chart which is updated every year. To ensure that this color is consistent across your printed materials, marketing materials and signage the formula mix for this color is 32 parts Pantone yellow, ¼ part blue and 1 part black; kind of like a cake recipe. If mixed correctly, the resulting color should always match the swatch on the fan chart.

Be aware though that printed colors may not always look like the colors you see on your computer monitor. The reason is that all computer monitors are different and most are not calibrated so the shades you see on the screen are very different than the actual color. Additionally, monitors only use red, blue and green light (RBG colors) to give you the colors you see on screen, but that doesn’t translate the same on paper.

Also note that colors look different when printed on different types of paper or materials. Inks printed on coated stock will be stronger and more true to life compared to the same ink printed on newsprint or uncoated paper. The PMS guide takes this into account and has a C after the number for coated or U for uncoated so you can see what the color will look like using any type of stock.

You may also hear the term CMYK which stands for four colors used to create a four color printing process. The colors are cyan, magenta, yellow and key (black) and are used in the order of their abbreviation and are usually printed on a white or light background. These colors, when combined, will provide a full color print that reproduces the look of a color photo.

This article is a very basic introduction to the colors used to print marketing products and other marketing materials. Most customers don’t understand how ink colors come about and my hope is that this provides a basic understanding of PMS colors and how to ensure that your company’s colors stay consistent every time you use them.

By the way, if you’re wondering, the 2011 PMS color is Honeysuckle, PMS 18-2120. The pantone site says “honeysuckle inspires us to face everyday problems with verve and energy and lifts our spirits beyond flight.” Oh, I remember a long time ago it was said that real men don’t wear pink. Guess I need to buy honeysuckle shirts and pants so I can “meet the challenges that have become part of everyday life.”

I’m glad I missed last year’s color which was a shade of turquoise. I’m not sure how I would look in turquoise pants!
