Cure an Aggressive Pet Rat

Is your rat aggressive?

Do your mice often start fights with other mice? Does it bite, or scratch you, or other rats? If you do, I may be able to help you. Whether it’s angry at you or other rats, it’s important to take action to prevent anyone from getting hurt.

Why is your mouse aggressive?

There are many reasons why your rat may be aggressive. May be down to hormones All rats go through a “puberty” stage at about 6 months to a year of age. At this stage your rat hormones can overwhelm him and this can lead to violence. You may also be under stress, perhaps you have lost a friend, or you have experienced a change in environment. It may be due to illness. If your rat is in pain, or unwell it may be aggressive. It may be due to your past mouse experience. If he has been bullied by people before, or maybe he hasn’t been bullied enough to know that we won’t hurt him, he may bite as a form of self-defense. Some mice are genetically more vulnerable to attack.

All rats release pheromones in their urine and these pheromones in males, mark their territory and can cause aggression in other rats. Both male and female rats can be aggressive, but males tend to eat.

What can you do about it?

Fortunately, there are many things you can try to treat your rats.

My secret weapon

Vanilla essence. If your rats are fighting, or you have trouble introducing them, this is the way to go. You can buy vanilla essence online or at your local grocery store. Simply rub a few drops on the base of both mice’s tails and their backs. It won’t hurt them to lick it, in fact they will love the taste.

The smell of vanilla essence (very sweet) will mask their natural smell, which may offend other mice (as mice use smell as a means of communication). Taste can encourage mice to mate and grooming will start a natural mating process. That’s all I have to do to stop any violence from my rats.

If your mouse is aggressive towards you, rub vanilla essence on your mouse and some on your wrist. This way you will both smell the same and won’t scare and offend your mouse.

Secret weapon 2

Vanilla essence was a temporary solution to stop my boys from fighting, but when I finally figured out what was causing the fights, it was easy to solve permanently:

I gave them 2 different bowls of food!

Well, it really was that simple. I placed 2 food bowls on opposite sides of the mice cage and placed a mouse in each food bowl. They never had to share again and all fighting stopped after that. It was surprisingly easy. They used to fight even when it was not time to eat, but that stopped.

Patience

When dealing with aggression, or any other negative behavior in your pet, you need to use a lot of patience and understanding. Changing behavior takes time and while vanilla essence will help, you have to deal with the problem at the source. If your rat bites out of fear, your main task will be to build a relationship of trust. Sit next to the cage and relax or read a book and let your rat come to you to feed you. Give him a treat when he comes to your lap. Building a relationship of trust can take time, but it’s worth it in the end. To deal with the fight between your rats have a plant manager dealing with water. Spray your mice if they fight and if this doesn’t work throw a towel over them.

Homeopathy:

Homeopathy is a wonderful tool when dealing with behavioral and health problems in your rats. It is completely natural, so there are no side effects, but it really works.

PetAlive’s aggressive formula is the best for rodents. It comes in a granule form, so you can dissolve it in soy milk, yogurt or your favorite rat drink and they will break down. The product is marketed to cats and dogs, but has worked wonders on rats.

The granules have an immediate calming effect and will generally help to stop the aggression within a few days. The formula won’t change your pets personality, but it can change their lives, if that means time out of the cage, enjoying the company of other mice and people.

Relieving Stress

Is your rat stressed or sick? Please check your mouse for signs of illness. Your rat may be aggressive because it is sick. See my mouse health check page for more information and take your mouse to the vet if necessary.

If your rat has changed its environment, or lost a mate this may be the cause of the aggression. Keep an eye on him, make sure he’s not too hot or too cold. If your rat is kept alone, find a companion. Mice are very social animals and love to have another mouse to sleep with, ride with and play with. Having a human partner is not enough. Female mice are easier to bring, but males can be a little more difficult. Check out the mice page for tips on how to get things going.

The Ultimate Resort

If you’ve tried everything and nothing works it may be time to think about fighting your pet. in men aggression can be caused by hormones and stepping will stop the rest of the hormones flooding your little rats body. There are many reports that neutering has completely stopped violence in pets and made their lives happier.

Of course the anesthetic is more dangerous to rats than, say, cats and dogs, so it’s something you have to consider carefully. You need to find a vet who cares for rats and respects you and your rat. Simply calling the surgery and asking a few questions will help you determine if the vet is right for you.

After surgery the rat will need to nurse you for a few days and then you can start to build a trusting relationship and take the aggression out.
