Excel Tip – Copy A VLOOKUP Formula Across Multiple Columns
It can be really frustrating if you set up your VLOOKUP formula in Excel, your formula works as expected looking at the first range of values and then you have to adjust the formula manually if you want to copy it to multiple columns.
I want to check the monthly sales of two types of Beanie hats in my sales data. So, I set up my VLOOKUP to look at monthly volumes for both Beanie hats Beanie_JL and Style Beanie_JP.
The normal VLOOKUP works perfectly fine starting from my first column which returns the value from January 2015, but if I drag the formula right to continue with the following months from February 2015 onwards then I don’t get the desired results.
Even using absolute references in my formula, the INDEX COLUMN NUMBER does not persist when I pull the formula. This is where most users can adjust this to get the results they need. However you don’t need to do this as we can add help to another formula with VLOOKUP. Let’s use the COLUMN formula to help us.
The COLUMN function is really straightforward. Converts a column number to a cell address. For example C1 would return 3 as C is the third column in our worksheet, so you can see how we can use this VLOOKUP formula.
Let’s go through the VLOOKUP formula statement
VLOOKUP (lookup_value, table_list, index_number, [range_lookup])
Check the price. The price you want to look up. The value you want to check must be in the first column of the range of cells you specifiedarray_table
List_table. This is the range of cells that VLOOKUP will search for check_value and return value.
index_number. This is the column number (starting with 1 in the left column of the table list) containing the return value.
List_Browse.
A logical value that specifies whether you want to VLOOKUP to find the correct or approximate match of the game:
- It’s true takes the first column in a table arranged numerically or alphabetically, and will search for the closest value. This is the default method if you do not specify one.
- IT IS A LIE looks for the actual value in the first column
The first COLUMN INDEX NUMBER in VLOOKUP that I want to return is in the SECOND column of our data set, so instead of using 2 as the COLUMN INDEX NUMBER I can replace it with B1. The formula looks like this.
=IVLOOKUP($L$7,$B$3:$J$25,INLAMN(B1),FALSE)
Once I do this the formula will automatically update itself as it is drawn.
