Amla: The New King of Vitamin C

There is a lesson to be learned from our history of technological progress. Think about it. When personal computers became widely used, we quickly abandoned our typewriters. The introduction of DVDs saw the end of VHS and all types of videocassette. And perhaps most impressively, the big wave of cell phones and mobile communications has largely disrupted the generation of pay phones. So, in the spirit of nutritional progress, it should come as no surprise that today’s vitamin C offerings are light years ahead of what we had just a few years ago.

Well, this doesn’t mean that the Vitamin C we’ve been taking all these years isn’t somehow ineffective. Traditional Vitamin C supplements have been in business for over 70 years and will always have their place in human health. But, as with any type of science-based health product, it would be difficult (and wrong) to ignore the power of a similar product that shows strong promise in improving the quality of our lives. We have proven this before; first in 1957 with the introduction of CoQ10, and again in 1970 with fish oil and omega-3 fatty acids. Fast forward to the beginning of this 2nd century, once again we find ourselves on the cusp of a revelation that will surely pave the way for good health in the decades to come.

So without further ado, let’s take a closer look at Amla — the new king of vitamin C.

Uses of Amla fruit (Emblica officinalis, Phyllanthus emblica) has been an important part of Indian Ayurvedic Medicine for centuries, and is one of the most concentrated sources of vitamin C.1 and despite centuries of use in Ayurvedic medicine, most health-conscious consumers still do not realize how concentrated it is. it really is. So to help put things into perspective, let’s do a simple comparison.

It is estimated that, gram for gram, Amla fruit extracts contain 35 times more vitamin C than limes, 30 times more than oranges, and an astonishing 160 times more than apples. That being said, 100 grams of Amla will produce over 500 mg of vitamin C.2 What is even more impressive, the vitamin C found naturally in Amla is not acidic and therefore will not cause the discomfort that many have experienced when taking the ritual. vitamin C supplements.3

This helps to illustrate two very interesting points. First, Amla appears to be a very powerful antioxidant that uses a natural source of vitamin C. The vitamin C in Amla combines with tannins, thus protecting it from being destroyed by light and heat. This helps ensure better utilization in the body. Next, adding Amla enables people with different stomachs and digestive disorders to reap the life-enhancing benefits of the compound that they might not otherwise be able to absorb.4

As mentioned earlier, this high concentration of vitamin C has made Amla a common ingredient among Ayurvedic practitioners. And while much of this can be attributed to the powerful antioxidant properties of the extract, Amla’s power extends beyond healthy cells. Research continues to show that, based on its unique profile of active ingredients, Amla appears to provide a number of beneficial effects that cannot be achieved with synthesized natural vitamin C. We now know that Amla contains significant amounts of cytokine-like substances. , like zeatin, z. nucleotide and z. riboside, among the rich minerals and amino acids.5

Based on its cooling, antipyretic, antiseptic and rejuvenating properties, Amla has been equally respected for the role it plays in food. So much so in fact, that it is one of the three main fruits that include Triphala, a digestive tonic that contains the fruits of Amla, Harada and Behada. Long before it caused the interest of vitamin C researchers, the use of Amla was considered by many Ayurvedic practitioners to be very successful in stimulating the digestive system. , moderates immune function, facilitates the elimination of toxins, strengthens the liver, supports normal cholesterol balance and prevents lipid peroxidation. And because of its powerful antioxidant properties, Amla can help fight free radicals within the GI tract.7,8

No matter how you choose to look at it, Amla’s complex profile of naturally occurring compounds makes it one of the best extracts available to hit the consumer market. Be sure to check the formula it contains Phyllanthus emblica extracts that produce at least 50% natural ascorbic acid, by weight.
