Getting Perfume Through Security – Is Perfume Allowed Through Airport Security?

Preparing for a trip can be a time-consuming and stressful endeavor. With so many rules and regulations about what you can and can’t bring on board, you want to make sure you pack correctly before you leave the airport. You don’t want to risk being stopped by airport security for something like a bottle of perfume, and miss your flight. Keeping up to date with the latest airline security regulations on perfume will allow you to pack wisely before heading to the airport. Below are the Travel Security Administration’s regulations regarding perfume.

There is a very simple formula for carry-on baggage established by the TSA. It’s called the 3-1-1 rule. This rule allows you to carry only liquids, gels and aerosols in a 3 ounce container. It should be stored in a one quart (one liter) plastic zip-lock bag. This includes aromatic oils, creams and perfumes. The quantity is 100 ml per container. So if your bottle of perfume or cologne is less than that, you shouldn’t have a problem. Calvin Klein’s CKOne perfume, for example, is 3.4 ounces. You probably won’t be able to get away with this type of bottle.

In general, most aerosols are prohibited, however, unless they are personal products, such as deodorant or perfume spray. The TSA rules that aerosols are not allowed except for personal hygiene items. You can also bring water or coffee or any other beverage on the plane as long as it fits in your zip-lock bag. The truth is that you can get away with having a slightly larger bottle of something – they won’t look for the correct size written on the bottle. Most standard perfume bottles are much smaller than one quart. With other toiletries, however, you’re better off getting travel-sized items like shampoo and toothpaste or packing them in a carry-on bag, if you have one. Otherwise, you will have to buy them at your destination. I personally don’t even use a zip-lock bag. I just put all my laundry in a small plastic shopping bag and tied it up tight. But if you want to be safe, put your perfume and other toiletries in a freezer bag and wrap it in a t-shirt or a small towel so it doesn’t break your luggage.

It may depend on the flight you are taking. Different airlines may vary slightly in their safety regulations. It would be wise to call your airline ahead of time and ask about their policies regarding perfumes and other small bottles, check their policy on their website. If you use a travel agent, you will be aware of different airline rules.

Always leave yourself plenty of time to check in. The TSA advises those traveling domestically to arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure. Allow yourself more time for international travel.
