## Excel Tip – Using Names To Quickly Navigate Your Excel Work Book

By naming a range of cells, a function, a constant, or a table in Excel we can make life easier for ourselves in many ways.

By naming the cells we can give formula context and meaning, for example – let’s take a simple formula

= AMOUNT(A2:A13) which would mean more to us if it was written as

=SUM(sumofmonthlysales). By simply calling the monthly sales cells we can make this formula more understandable.

We can also name cells or ranges to allow us to quickly move around the workbook, especially if it is large with many worksheets. Just hit the drop down arrow in the word box to jump directly to the specified areas in our worksheets.

We can create two types of words, the first is a A defined name that applies to a cell, a range of cells, a formula, or a constant value, the second type is The name of the table.

Excel creates a default Excel table name of Table1, Table2, and so on, each time you insert an Excel table, but you can change the table name to make it more meaningful to you.

Let’s go ahead and create a formula name and a table and see how we can easily view our Excel workbook.

First let’s set the table. In my Excel worksheet I have a reference table with types of building blocks. Excel named this table Table1 by default, but to make it more descriptive I want to call it structure house.

By default Excel names this Table4. Changing the Name – there are 2x ways, using a name manager or a name box. For the table we will use the Name Manager-

• Formulas tab

• Name holder

• Select the table

• Click Edit

• Rename the Table. I decided to name it houseconstructiontypetl

Let’s move on to the cell reference name. We name the cell Tax Rate which is in another area of our workbook. To name this cell we will use the second method which uses a text box. All we have to do to call this list is to type the name in the box and press enter which automatically assigns the name to the cell.

The cell is now named. So we can take a quick look at the workbook. Just hit the down arrow in the word box to jump directly to the named field.
