Sizing the Exhaust Fan and Evaporative Cooler in Dry Cleaning Plants

Almost all Dry Cleaners use Evaporative Coolers, or Swamp Coolers as some call them, in their dry cleaners. Using refrigerated air conditioners will be more expensive. Their steam boilers release hundreds of thousands of BTUs of heat into the work area. Removing this excess heat using air conditioning will cost thousands of dollars per month. For this reason, the Dry Cleaner’s workplace should have an Exhaust Fan capable of doing a full air exchange in about 1 1/2 minutes. Let me give you an example to help you find the right size exhaust fan for your Cleaner.

Let’s say you rent a space in a shopping center that is 25 feet wide and 80 feet deep. The total square feet of this rental property is 2,000 sq. ft. Usually the front sales area is heated and ventilated. Then, remove from 2,000 sq. ft. Your sales area is 25 feet wide and 15 feet deep for a total of 375 sq. ft. This leaves you with 1,625sq. The boiler room is 10 feet x 10 feet (100 sq. ft.) and the toilet is 6 feet by 6 feet (36 sq. ft.) for a total of 136 sq. ft. .. This gives you a final total of 1,489 sq. ft. of floor space in the work area to ventilate and cool. To find the cubic feet of work space you need to measure from floor to ceiling. I say roof deck because I have never suggested installing a ceiling in a work area. This only keeps the temperature low in the room and makes the work area too hot. Multiply 1,489 sq. ft. with 15 ft from floor to ceiling and you get 22,335 cubic feet of exhaust space. Divide 22,335 by 1 ½ (the number of minute changes per air) and get the total number of cubic feet of air to remove every minute, or CFM. Under these conditions, I would install an exhaust fan rated at about 15,000 CFM. The most common exhaust fans used in Dry Cleaners are Grainger fans. There are Grainger stores in most major cities in the United States, making it easy to buy fans and parts. I have bought exhaust fans from Grainger for years. After that, you will need to dehumidify with an Evaporative Cooler. These work well in dry climates. But even in humid areas they provide cooling. You may only get a 10 degree temperature drop in a humid environment, but in 95 days, a cool 85 degree breeze can feel great while working on a hot press. At a Dry Cleaner plant you will find them using a large commercial Evaporative Cooler. For the workspace I estimated above you would need to install a 15,000 CFM Cooler. Keep in mind when looking at coolers, they often give CFM ratings for free air. Because you will probably have a pipe system for cooling the workplace, there is a constant pressure or a restriction of air flow from the cooler. If you are using a 15,000 to 16,000 CFM Evaporative Cooler, you will probably have a good match with a 15,000 CFM exhaust fan. The constant pressure of the pipe will drop the CFM rating by two thousand CFM. The reason this game is good is that it requires a small amount of negative pressure in the working area, in other words less air is coming out of the room than is being supplied to the room. The most common Evaporative Cooler used in Dry Cleaning applications is the Champion 14/21 SD or the Essick 14/21 SD. These are the most common because they are the cheapest models on sale. If you are willing to spend a little money, I recommend going for a cooler that will last longer. Champion AS150 or Champion AS15012 are better built and longer lasting coolers.
