Oral Thrush Caused by Yeast Overgrowth

When you get a yeast infection in the mouth, it’s called thrush, which appears as red and white bumps and can be painful. Newborns, infants, and the elderly are most affected, but it can happen to anyone at any age. In healthy babies a yeast infection is usually not a serious issue and can be easily treated and treated naturally.

In a mild case of thrush, the only thing you can do is to clean / clean the nipples of the baby’s bottle and pacifiers regularly and give the inside of the mouth a gentle massage with a clean, damp cloth.

If you are breastfeeding, you should also cover your nipples to avoid passing yeast infections back and forth between you and your baby. There are antifungal medications available, but then your child gets to eat those chemicals, so we prefer the natural way. You can also apply lanolin to help relieve sore nipples.

If you wear dentures and develop thrush it is very important to clean your dentures every night and take care of your mouth, here are the steps you should take:

– Remove dentures before going to bed.

– Use a clean toothbrush and water to scrub well.

– Soak them overnight in Chlorhexidine Gluconate, which you can get from a pharmacist. You can also use a denture cleaner (such as Polident or Efferdent) that is sold at most drug or grocery stores.

– If you use Chlorhexidine Gluconate to clean your dentures, you should rinse them thoroughly in the morning. Do not use fluoridated toothpaste for at least 30 minutes as Fluoride has a weak effect on Chlorhexidine Gluconate.

There is a dye called Gentian Violet (1%). This dye will kill bacteria and fungus. Reversal should only be used once. If you don’t get rid of all the fungi you should try another medicine. It is available without a prescription, but should only be used by adults. Here are some prevention tips that may help:

– You must have good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing twice a day, gargling once a day and using an antiseptic mouthwash. If this is your second round of thrush you should change your toothbrush.

– Practice washing your hands well.

– If you want to take a liquid antibiotic, you must rinse your mouth within a few minutes of taking it.

– If you have health problems such as diabetes, HIV, or cancer, you are at a higher risk of developing thrush.

– You should wash your mouth with mouthwash after inhaling corticosteroids

– If you have AIDS, Listerine can be especially helpful in preventing thrush.

Here’s how to help reduce the risk of spreading thrush to children:

-During the last 3 months of pregnancy treat female yeast infection. This reduces the chances of the baby having thrush during delivery. Treating vaginal yeast infection also helps prevent the spread of thrush during oral sex.

– Wash all nipples and pacifiers daily, if you prepare bottles and nipples ahead of time keep them in the fridge to reduce the chance of yeast growth.

– Yeast can start to grow in the nipple after an hour, so if the baby drinks from it you should not continue to let the baby drink from it.

-Anything that a child puts in his mouth should be run in the dishwasher or boiled for 20 min.

– When your baby is wet his diaper needs to be changed. Warm, moist areas are the perfect environment for the yeast that causes thrush to grow.

– If possible, breastfeeding your baby is the best thing you can do for your baby’s health. There are antibodies in breast milk that will help your baby’s immune system fight off the infection itself.

– If you breastfeed and develop sore and red nipples or have pain while breastfeeding it is possible that your baby can pass the thrush infection to you.

If your child has an infection elsewhere and needs antibiotics after each dose you should rinse their mouth with water. Taking antibiotics by mouth can cause an imbalance of bacteria in the mouth which can allow the yeast to overgrow which causes thrush. A simple water rinse can go a long way in helping prevent oral antibiotics from irritating the oral cavity.

If you must give your child medicine through a dropper, try to avoid putting the dropper in his mouth. You can put the medicine on a cotton swab and then on the affected area. Then discard the swab.

Do not put anything back into the medicine bottle to avoid cross contamination with yeast.

There are things you can do to reduce the discomfort like drinking cold drinks (avoid sugary drinks really), try water or iced tea.

Also flavored ice creams or frozen juices and gelatin, ice cream and easy-to-swallow custard. If it causes pain to swallow, try to gently suck with a straw. Rinsing with warm salt water several times a day can also make you feel better. (1 tsp-5ml, salt in 8 oz- 240 ml warm water).
