Skeletal Structure Chemistry – How to Draw Skeletal Structures in Organic Chemistry

Skeletal structure chemistry is an important part of working with reactions and methods when studying organic chemistry. In this article I will show you a number of reasons why you need to know and understand how to draw skeletons.

As an organic chemistry student you will study many different types of molecules. You will learn how to name and identify functional groups, followed by learning specific answers and ways to do each of the above.

As you study the different sections you will find yourself writing molecules over and over again. And while you may choose to represent your structures in Lewis Structure or reverse molecular formula, I would advise against it for the following reasons:

  1. The chemistry of the bone structure is clean compared to other formats
  2. Bone structures are faster to draw compared to other structures
  3. Bone structures are easy to see and identify

Let’s look at each reason individually, remembering that skeletal structures, bond-line-notation, or line-structure all refer to the same type of molecular diagrams.

Bond-Line-Notation is better than other formats

when labeling molecules in reactions, speed is important. The faster you write the faster you can finish the problem at hand and move on to the next example. As you write faster you will find yourself writing sloppier and sloppier. When you draw detailed structures with each atom shown you will find yourself sacrificing the neatness of your drawings for the sake of time. The skeletal structure or line is fast and therefore does not need to be ‘rushed’ to completion. This will ensure a clean and tidy page.

Bone structures are faster to draw compared to other structures

As I wrote above, lines are faster to draw compared to each carbon and hydrogen atom in your structure. When using a skeletal or linear structure you can omit carbon atoms by simply drawing lines. Hydrogen atoms are defined and therefore omitted as well. This reduces your drawing time significantly.

Bone structures are easy to see and identify

Last, but certainly not least, the lines are clean and easy to identify quickly. Let’s face it, as a science student you probably don’t have the cleanest handwriting. When you draw a molecule with each atom and the bond angle shown, it is likely that the atoms are too ‘dirty’ on the paper. However, when you simplify the line structure you will find your drawings organized, clean, concise, and therefore easily visible at a glance.
