I often talk to young people who like energy drinks, trying to get their perspective. I try to advise them on healthier options than the sugar and caffeine-filled energy drinks they usually consume. I get the feeling that they don’t hear me.

Children develop a sweet tooth with the help of everything from baby formula to birthday cakes. Sugar is associated with gifts, parties, and happiness — so, is it any wonder they turn to sweets when things go wrong?
Compounding our problem of overindulgence in sweets, processed food manufacturers know how we feel about sweets and they know that including even small amounts of sugar in the formula of any food or drink will make us tend to overeat. As a result, sugar — unless you’re very careful — is everywhere.
(Substituting aspartame or other artificial sweeteners does not change the fact that the sweet taste is an invitation to overdrink these drinks. Aspartame has been found to have health risks in its own right.)
When a child develops a taste for foods and drinks with a lot of sugar, it is natural that they tend to overuse these things. If you have allowed this to happen, then you may have set them on a collision course with a strong alcoholic drink.

It’s not my intention to demonize energy drinks, right away. I believe there are unique benefits to those made intelligently, that is, avoiding high sugar and caffeine content.
My point is to warn parents about the interest that many young people seem to have in seeking a powerful energy drink, without realizing the dangers (and unpleasant consequences) of excessive caffeine consumption. Surprisingly, the “gateway drug” here appears to be harmless sugar.
