The Breeding Formula For Chinchilla Colors
One of the many things that make chinchillas so interesting, is the variety of chinchilla colors. As a pet owner, you have the right to choose more than a dozen colors. If you have your own pair, you can breed chinchillas, with full control over the color they will have. With enough knowledge of chinchilla breeding and care, you can have chinchillas of your children and their colors exactly as you want.
Standard is the color that refers to the original or natural color of the chinchillas. Common chinchillas are usually difficult to find, as most of the breeds sold in stores have been bred in one way or another. Most of the standard varieties have already been mutated and are therefore produced by mutated parents.
To produce a normal color, breeding is not the answer. There are still shops that sell regular chinchillas. This will require a fair amount of research in your field.
Ebony chinchillas are characterized by a gray color ranging from light gray to solid black. There are two ways to reproduce: heterozygous and homozygous. In order to have a heterozygous ebony chinchilla, one parent must have the ebony gene. Kitties will have a gray hue of coat and a lighter color of its belly.
A homozygous ebony chinchilla can be produced by breeding two homozygous ebony chinchillas. Compared to the heterozygous type, the coat of the kitten will carry the same shade of gray, including its belly.
Ebony chinchillas are often mistaken for a charcoal hue. What defines the difference between ebony and charcoal hues is that the former has a matte texture, while the matte texture has a glossy sheen texture. Charcoal chinchillas have a wavy texture and an uneven color tone around their coat.
To produce a charcoal chinchilla, both parents must have the charcoal gene. Heterozygous chinchillas come from one or two heterozygous charcoal chinchillas, while homozygous chinchillas come from homozygous charcoal chinchillas.
Charcoal chinchillas can be bred with other colors to produce chinchillas with black velvet and red color. Black velvet chinchillas have full charcoal coats and a clear white belly with shades of blue. Charbrown chinchillas, on the other hand, are a combination of charcoal and brown parents.
Another chinchilla color that can be filled both in heterozygous and homozygous is the beige color. For a homozygous beige chinchilla, two unmutated beige parents are required. It differs from the heterozygous beige because it has bright eyes and pink ears. A heterozygous beige chinchilla similarly needs one type of beige. This breed has red eyes and pointed ears. Both of these beige species have a white belly with blue hues across.
If it is crossbred with a black velvet chinchilla, a brown velvet type will be produced. Crossbreeding with a violet chinchilla will result in a pearl variety.
There are many other unusual colors – sullivan, tan and pastel, bard gold, diamond blue, white to name a few. If you are about to start the hobby of breeding chinchillas, it is best to start with basic chinchilla colors.
