What is the best time of day to water your lawn? This is a very common question that just about everybody with a lawn wants to know. I have heard of and seen many practices regarding this topic, and I have come to the conclusion that many people have it wrong. Even people who have done research and combine the research with their common sense often get it wrong.

Your lawn needs about one inch of water per week. Too much water or too little water is not healthy for your lawn. The best way to accomplish this is with one really thorough soaking at the right time. Watering every day a little bit, or walking around your lawn spraying your hose every day may actually spray your lawn with the required inch per week, but your lawn still most probably will not be getting the required inch per week. This explains why daily watering is pointless. Your lawn does not require that much water anyway. Watering your lawn a thorough inch every day will only be detrimental to your lawn, and spraying it every day a little bit is completely pointless, since it will just evaporate when the sun comes up.

The best time of day to water your lawn is at about three or four in the morning when the water pressure is the highest. This way you will accomplish two vital things:

This will allow the water to soak into the topsoil properly. However, the leftover water will lay around all night long until the sun comes out and evaporates it. This can cause various fungi and molds to grow in your lawn, but it is still better than nothing.

The worst time of day to water your lawn is in the afternoon when the sun is beating down at full strength. The water will evaporate almost as quickly as it lands on your lawn, making this watering completely worthless. I see automatic sprinklers going on in the middle of the day all the time, but let me assure you that this accomplishes nothing unless the sprinklers stay on for hours at a time. Watering your lawn in the afternoon in such a way that will provide an ample amount of water to soak into the topsoil takes significantly more time and water than watering in the early morning, and is therefore almost always completely pointless. For this same reason, walking around with a hose and spraying your lawn is also basically pointless, since your lawn will not get anything close to the inch of water that it requires. The water will instead evaporate almost instantly.

The best way to figure out if you lawn is getting the required inch per week is to put out a few empty cans next to your garden or lawn and to see if it fills up an inch high of water. If you have a sprinkler system, this is a good way to see how long it takes for the sprinklers to soak your lawn with an inch of water. However long it takes to fill up the cans with an inch of water is a pretty good indicator of how long it takes to soak your lawn with an inch of water.

One of the most important actions you can take to facilitate your success as a cyclist is to stay properly hydrated during all of your workouts and events. You can do this by following 3 simple steps:

1. Determine your hydration needs. Generally speaking, you should drink 4-8 oz of fluid every 15 minutes, depending upon your sweat rate. For most people, this adds up to about one bottle per hour (more on a hot, humid day). This is perhaps the most important step you can take to ensure a successful ride. Dehydration has a dramatic, negative effect on cycling performance. For instance, dehydration of only 2% of your total body weight can impair performance. Dehydration of 5% can reduce work output by as much as 10%. As a general rule of thumb, bring two full bottles on every ride, especially if it is a hot day. For high temperature rides of more than an hour, consider using a hydration system. This serves a dual purpose. First, it allows you to conveniently carry a large volume of liquid. Second, by freezing the water (or filling it with ice), the hydration pack can help lower your core temperature. Remember, it is very important to practice using the hydration pack prior to an important event or competition. They can be a bit cumbersome.

2. Weigh-in before and after workouts. Get in the habit of weighing yourself before and after every workout. This serves two purposes. First, it helps you determine your sweat rate. A 60-minute workout is a good indicator. If you weigh two pounds less after a workout, then you are down about 32 ounces of water. Second, it helps determine how much fluid you need to drink per hour. In this instance, the goal for future workouts (in similar heat and humidity conditions) is to drink 32 ounces of fluid per hour. Frankly, not everyone will drink this much so drink lots of fluid before and immediately after your workouts. Remember, your goal should be to weigh the same after post-workout hydration and nutrition as you did before the workout.

3. Decide what to drink for a particular workout or competition. For events or workouts that will last an hour or less, water is sufficient. For endurance exercise that lasts over an hour, use a sports drink to replace carbohydrates and electrolytes. There are many to choose from and most of them work effectively. Just make sure they contain about 6% to 8% carbohydrate and some sodium for electrolyte replacement. To determine which drinks work best, select three and try each one in a similar type of workout or event (e.g., same intensity and duration). First, determine if any of the drinks cause gastrointestinal distress (e.g., bloating). If one of them does, eliminate it from consideration (note: drinks with more that 8% carbohydrate may be more likely to cause stomach distress). Second, you should consider taste. You are more likely to use a drink if it tastes good.

Most refrigerators and walk-ins seem virtually indestructible and problem free, but you’ll get longer life out of yours by following these safety and maintenance tips. Clean the door gaskets and hinges regularly. The door gaskets, made of rubber, can rot more easily if they are caked with food or grime, which weakens their sealing properties. They can be safely cleaned with a solution of baking soda and warm water. Hinges can be rubbed with a bit of petroleum jelly to keep them working well. Dirty coils force the refrigerator to run hotter, which shortens the life of the compressor motor. They should be cleaned every 90 days, preferably with an industrial-strength vacuum cleaner.

Walk-in floors can be damp-mopped but should never be hosed out. Too much water can get into the seals between the floor panels and damage the insulation. A refrigerator only works as well as the air that’s allowed to circulate around its contents. Cramming food containers together so there’s not a spare inch of space around them doesn’t help. Also try to keep containers (especially cardboard ones) from touching the walls of the cabinet. They may freeze and stick to the walls, damaging both product and wall. Use a good rotation system: First in, first out (FIFO) is preferable. Or put colored dots on food packages, a different color for each day of the week, so everyone in your kitchen knows how long each item has been in the fridge.

WALK-IN COOLERS AND FREEZERS

A walk-in cooler is just what its name implies: a cooler big enough to walk into. It can be as small as a closet or as large as a good-size room, but its primary purpose is to provide refrigerated storage for large quantities of food in a central area. Experts suggest that your operation needs a walk-in when its refrigeration needs exceed 80 cubic feet, or if you serve more than 250 meals per day. Once again, you’ll need to determine how much you need to store, what sizes of containers the storage space must accommodate, and the maximum quantity of goods you’ll want to have on hand. The only way to use walk-in space wisely is to equip it with shelves, organized in sections. Exactly how much square footage do you need? The easiest formula is to calculate 1 to 1.5 cubic feet of walk-in storage for every meal you serve per day. Another basic calculation: Take the total number of linear feet of shelving you’ve decided you will need (A), and divide it by the number of shelves (B) you can put in each section.

This will give you the number of linear feet per section (C). To this number (C), add 40 to 50 percent (1.40 or 1.50) to cover “overflow”-volume increases, wasted space, and bulky items or loose product. This will give you an estimate of the total linear footage (D) needed. However, linear footage is not enough. Because shelves are three dimensional, you must calculate square footage. So multiply (D) by the depth of each shelf (E) to obtain the total square footage amount (F). Finally, double the (F) figure, to compensate for aisle space. Roughly half of walk-in cooler space is aisle space. Another popular formula is to calculate that, for every 28 to 30 pounds of food you’ll store, you will need 1 cubic foot of space. When you get that figure, multiply it by 2.5. (The factor 2.5 means only 40 percent of your walk-in will be used as storage space; the other 60 percent is aisles and space between products.)

The result is the size of the refrigerated storage area you will need. For a walk-in freezer, simply divide your walk-in refrigerator space by two. Larger kitchens, which serve more than 400 meals a day, may need as many as three walk-in refrigerators for different temperature needs: one for produce (41 degrees Fahrenheit), one for meats and fish (33 to 38 degrees Fahrenheit), and one for dairy products (32 to 41 degrees Fahrenheit). The walk-in is used most often to store bulk foods. Because this often means wheeling carts or dollies in and out, the floor should be level with the kitchen floor.

This leveling is achieved by the use of strips (called screeds) that are applied to the floor. Coolers don’t come as a single unit; they are constructed on-site. The walls, ceilings, and floors are made of individual panels. Wall panels should be insulated to a rating of R-30, which means a 4-inch thickness. They come in various lengths and widths, with 12-by-12-inch corner panels at 90-degree angles. They can be as short as 71?2 feet or as tall as 131?2 feet. The most common type of insulation inside the panels is polyurethane, and the outside walls of the panels can be made of stainless steel, vinyl, or aluminum. Stainless steel is the most expensive, and aluminum-because it’s the least expensive-is the most popular choice. If the walk-in is an outdoor installation, aluminum is the most weather resistant.

The installer will be sure the unit has interior lighting. The floor panels for walk-ins are similar to the wall panels. Load capacities of 600 pounds per square foot are the norm, but if you plan to store very heavy items (like beer kegs), a reinforced floor can be purchased with a load capacity of up to 1000 pounds per square foot. The refrigeration system of a walk-in is a more complex installation than a standard refrigerator, primarily because it’s so much bigger. Matching the system (and its power requirements) with the dimensions of the walk-in and its projected use is best left to professionals, but it’s important to note that a walk-in accessed frequently throughout the day will require a compressor with greater horsepower to maintain its interior temperature than one that is accessed seldom.

A 9-foot-square walk-in would need at least a 2-horsepower compressor. The condenser unit is located either on top of the walk-in (directly above the evaporator) or up to 25 feet away, with lines connecting it to the walk-in. The latter, for obvious reasons, is known as a remote system, and is necessary for larger-than-normal condensing units with capacities of up to 7.5 horsepower. In a remote system, the refrigerant must be added at the time of installation. For smaller walk-ins, there’s also a plumbing configuration called a quick-couple system, which is shipped from the factory fully charged with refrigerant. This definitely simplifies installation. However, you may need the added power of a remote system if your kitchen has any of these drains on the walk-in’s cooling ability: frequent door opening, glass display doors, multiple doors per compartment, or an ambient kitchen temperature that’s near 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Modern walk-ins sometimes offer a frozen-food section in addition to the regular cooler space. There are pros and cons to this concept. It may ease the load on the freezer, because it’s already located inside a chilled airspace; but it also can’t help but reduce overall usable space, because it requires a separate door. The doors should open out, not into the cooler itself. The standard door opening is 34 by 78 inches. Several door features are important for proper walk-in operation. These include: A heavy-duty door closer. Self-closing, cam-lift door hinges. If the door can be opened past a 90-degree angle, the cam will hold it open. A heavy-duty stainless steel threshold. This is installed over the galvanized channel of the door frame. A pull-type door handle, with both a cylinder door lock and room to use a separate padlock if necessary. Pressure-sensitive vents, which prevent vacuum buildup when opening and closing the door. An interior safety release so no one can be (accidentally or otherwise) locked inside the cooler.

Other smart features that can be ordered for walk-ins are: A thermometer (designed for outdoor use, but mounted inside the cooler) with a range of 40 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. A monitoring and recording system that keeps a printout of refrigeration temperature or downloads to a computer. Glass, full-length door panels (like those in supermarkets and convenience stores), sometimes called merchandising doors, either hinged or sliding. Heavy-duty plastic strip curtains inside the door. (One manufacturer claims a 40 percent energy savings with this feature.)

A foot treadle, which enables you to open the door by pressing on a pedal or lever with your foot when both hands are full. Three-way interior lighting, which can be turned on from outside or inside the cooler, with a light-on indicator light outside. Inside, the light itself should be a vapor-proof bulb with an unbreakable globe and shield. When space is at a premium, think about whether it is practical to install an outdoor walk-in unit. This is an economical way to add space without increasing the size of your kitchen, and you can purchase ready-to-use, stand-alone structures with electricity and refrigeration systems in place. They come in standard sizes from 8 to 12 feet wide and up to 50 feet in length, in 1-foot increments.

They range in height from 7.5 to 9.5 feet. Look for a unit with a slanted, weatherproof roof, a weather hood, and a fully insulated floor. Outdoor walk-ins cost about half of the price of installing an indoor kitchen walk-in, so this is a money-saving idea if it works in your location. If your demands for walk-in space are seasonal, consider leasing a refrigerated trailer, available in most metropolitan areas on a weekly or monthly basis. They can provide an instant 2000 cubic feet of additional storage space, which can be kept at any temperature from 40 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. They use basic 60-amp, 230-volt, three-phase electricity. Ask if the lease agreement includes hookup at your site and service if anything goes wrong.

We have all heard it since we were kids — drink your eight glasses of water per day. When you get dehydrated, your skin starts to look mottled and dry; the elasticity appears to go away and your overall tone looks unhealthy. By drinking plenty of water, you’ll look more alive, your skin will look healthier, and again, the appearance of wrinkles or sagging skin will diminish.

Third pro: Drinking plenty of water will help you when you’re trying to lose weight. Water helps to breakdown toxins, carbs, even proteins, then helps flush them away. Since our bodies are mostly water anyway, the more you keep flowing through it, the more opportunities you have to rid it of unwanted substances, including those that keep extra weight on.

When it comes to the cons of drinking water, that’s a little more difficult. One problem may be frequent urination, especially if you’re not used to drinking very much water; that subsides after you get used it though, so it should not be a long term concern. The only other possible con would be drinking excessive amounts of water. It is rare, but we’ve heard the horror stories where kids (or adults) died from too much water intake.

Remember, as adults, not to drink too much water after you have over exerted yourself (such as run a marathon) or you’re over heated; instead, take in fluids slowly and build your hydration levels back up over time (or even consult a doctor); and finally, never force kids too drink large amounts of water at one time.

Geometry For Beginners – How To Use SOHCAHTOA To Find Missing Measurements In A Right Triangle

As has been discussed in several articles in this series, the primary focus of Geometry is to find missing measurements–both side lengths and angle measures–in geometric figures. We have already shown how the 36-60 right and 45-right special triangles can help. In addition, we started looking at another potential shortcut, SOHCAHTOA. This is a mnemonic device for remembering the trigonometric ratios; and in a previous article, we discussed this device at length from the standpoint of what the letters stand for and what the trig ratios actually represent. In this article, we will put this information to work as a tool to find the missing measurements in any right triangle.

Remember that SOHCAHTOA is telling us which two sides of a right triangle form the ratio of each trig function. It stands for: sine = opposite side/ hypotenuse, cosine = adjacent side/ hypotenuse, and tangent = opposite side/ adjacent side. You must remember how to spell and pronounce this “word” correctly. SOHCAHTOA is pronounced sew-ka-toa; and you must emphasize to yourself out loud the ‘o’ sound of SOH and the ‘ah’ sound of CAH.

To begin working with SOHCAHTOA to find missing measurements–usually angles–let’s draw our visual image. Draw a backwards capital “L” and then draw in the segment connecting the endpoints of the legs. Label the lower left corner as angle X. Let’s also pretend we have a 3, 4, 5 right triangle. Thus, the hypotenuse has to be the 5 side, and let’s make the base leg the 3 leg and the vertical leg the 4 leg. There is nothing special about this triangle. It just helps if we are all picturing the same thing. I chose to use a Pythagorean triple of 3, 4, 5 because everyone already knows the sides really do form a right triangle. I also chose it because so many students make an assumption they shouldn’t! For some unknown reason, many Geometry students believe that a 3, 4, 5 right triangle is also a 30-60 right triangle. Of course, this can’t be since in a 30-60 right triangle, one side is half the hypotenuse, and we don’t have that. But we are going to use SOHCAHTOA to find the actual angle measures and, hopefully, convince people the angles are not 30 and 60.

If we only knew two sides of the triangle, then we would have to use whichever trig function uses those two sides. For example, if we only knew the adjacent side and the hypotenuse for angle X, then we would be forced to used the CAH part of SOHCAHTOA. Fortunately, we know all three sides of the triangle, so we can choose whichever trig function we prefer. Over time and with practice, you will develop favorites.

In order to find the angles these trig ratios will determine, we need either a scientific or graphing calculator; and we will be using the “second” on “inverse” key. My personal preference is to use the tangent function when possible, and since we know both the opposite and adjacent sides, the tangent function can be used. We can now write the equation tan X = 4/3. However, to solve this equation we need to use that inverse key on our calculator. This key basically instructs the calculator to tell us what angle produces that 4/3 ratio of sides. Type into your calculator the following sequence, including the parentheses: 2nd tan (4/3) ENTER. Your calculator should produce the answer 53.1 degrees. If, instead, you got 0.927, your calculator is set to give you answers in radian measure and not degrees. Reset your angle settings.

Now, let’s see what happens if we use different sides. Using the SOH part of the formula gives use the equation sin X = 4/5 or X = inverse sin (4/5). Surprise! We still find out that X = 53.1 degrees. Doing likewise with the CAH part, gives use cos X = 3/5 or X = inv cos (3/5), and…TA DAH…53.1 degrees again. I hope you get the point here, that if you are given all three sides, which trig function you use makes no difference.

As you can see, SOHCAHTOA is a very powerful tool for finding missing angles in right triangles. It can also be used to find a missing side if an angle and one side are known. In the practice problem we have used, we knew we had sides 3, 4, and 5, and a right angle. We just used SOHCAHTOA to find ONE of our missing angles. How do we find the other missing angle? By far the quickest way to find the missing angle is to use the fact that the total of the angles of a triangle must be 180 degrees. We can find the missing angle by subtracting the 53.1 degrees from 90 degrees for 36.9 degrees.

Caution! Using this simple method seems like a good idea, but because it is dependent on our work for another answer, if we made a mistake on the first answer, the second is guaranteed to be wrong as well. When accuracy is more important than speed, it is best to use SOHCAHTOA again for the second angle, and then check your answers by verifying the three angles total 180 degrees. This method guarantees your answers are correct.

I also hope you understand that a 3, 4, 5 right triangle is NOT a 30-60 right triangle. It is close, with angles of 36.9 and 53.1 degrees, but definitely not the same!
