Travel to Bhutan

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to travel to Bhutan? My husband and I left in 2008, with our two-year-old son at the time. Bhutan is a small country between Nepal and China. When we left, they were completing a widened highway connecting the two cities of Bhutan, Thimphu and Paro, making travel between the two easier and safer.

Paro is the smaller of the two cities and is where you fly into Bhutan. It has a typical village atmosphere, with a small street full of shops and hotels. The flight from Kathmandu to Paro is amazing with the most amazing view of the Himalayan mountain range. Even the airport has architectural beauty, operated by commercial airline Druk Air. Paro Airport is listed as one of the 10 busiest airports in the world, known for its dramatic descent into the valley and short runway. The flight is really smooth, you make a circle and get off the airport quickly, but to be honest, I didn’t feel nervous. It’s like arriving in a fairy tale valley – breathtaking views and ancient settlements in the hills.

We were visiting family so we stayed at our family resort which was lovely with all the scenery and traditional Bhutanese architecture. For a few days we spent time in a hut directly across the hills from Taktsang Monastery. You can see the monastery up in the mountains, it looks very far away with the clouds dancing around it most of the time. There is a day trip you can take to visit it, half of the trip is on horseback, the other on foot. We went with our baby, and it was worth the effort.

We spent most of our time in Timphu, which is about an hour from Paro. Thimphu has a population of about 80,000, excluding the surrounding areas. It reminded me of Vail, Colorado, it’s like a small town on a mountain with high peaks protecting it. We went in May, and the weather was beautiful; cool at night, sunny during the day, and showers that never last long – like Colorado in May.

As a mother with a young child my first concern was, where can I find the things I need for my child? Fortunately they have grocery stores that are comparable to ours, some with different names, but disposable diapers are available. The only thing I highly recommend bringing from home is Children’s Tylenol, and bug repellent. Those are easy to come by for adults in Bhutan, not so much for children’s doses. There were no buggies where we stayed, but there are hot spots in Bhutan and if you go to one of those places you will need bug protection. They have safe boxed milk, formula, and baby food.

Thimphu town has a main street filled with interesting shops and all kinds of vendors. There are restaurants and bars, and several hotels in the town centre. It’s a warm and friendly town where the locals are used to having tourists around and helping you when they can. You quickly notice children wearing their school uniforms, or Bhutan’s official dress code, as large numbers gather in the main square after school or on weekends. There is a main Dzong (Fort) in Thimphu called Tashichoed Dzong, built during the early 1200’s.

I was able to visit some of the historical sites of Thimphu, the ancient medical school/library, the return caves, and the great Dzong in Thimphu. They were all magical places filled with so much energy that it really was like stepping back in time. I am a nurse so I wanted to see the hospital in Thimphu and see how they do things. The main hospital was a little overcrowded, but relatively clean and organized. My main interest was in the NICU (Intensive Intensive Care Unit). The nurses were very kind and allowed me to sneak into their unit quickly. It’s very small, but it has brand new equipment (medical equipment, incubators) that are very clean and amazing for the care of premature babies, I was very impressed.

We also went on a 4 day trip to central Bhutan. The guide takes you on a minibus to different towns, stopping at nice lodgings along the way. Beautifully designed, the gardens are unlike anything you’ve ever seen – brightly colored flowers and ancient trees. From small farm houses to large Dzongs dotting the hills and valleys, everything was a feast for the eyes, surrounded by hundreds of rhododendron trees that seemed to have existed before. The wildlife I saw was amazing – colorful birds, gray faced Langur monkeys, and yaks. The south-central region of Bhutan is cool and warm with some of the most unique forest foliage I’ve ever seen, purple-flowered trees, and lush grassy hills. Punakha Dzong was impressive, walking around you feel like you’ve stepped into some kind of time portal.

The people we met on our trip were very friendly and interesting, and we went home with great stories and warm memories. People always ask if I could live there, I would, but I’m a small town person. Bhutan is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to, I hope you get a chance to visit, it is truly an amazing trip.
