## Handicap Horse Races Using Speed Adjusted by Class and Pace

Horse racing handicaps use speed numbers alone and you will soon learn that speed figures are the main reason to bet and bet on horse racing. Thanks to standardization and accuracy, speed numbers do the job of evaluating horses and anything else, but that doesn’t mean you can make a profit from them. On the other hand, if you know how to use them, it’s a good place to start.

Let’s say you’re looking at a $20,000 race and you’re trying to figure out which horse is the fastest based on its figure. At first glance it looks like 1 has the highest speed because adding his speed numbers from his last three races gives the highest number for the race. He is the favorite in the morning line and seems like a logical choice to win.

However, if you take the time to dig deeper into the race and make adjustments to those ratings, you can find a winner with good value. For example, 2 is a horse that goes down in class. Although the 2 has a slower pace, he faced stiff competition and early pace in each of his races. The question is, does his overall speed over the last three races clearly reflect his ability compared to 1?

If you are facing tough competition, how should you adjust the speed numbers? To the best of my knowledge, there is no easy-to-use, well-defined way to adjust speed by speed numbers. That may seem like bad news at first, but it actually works for you. Because no one has found a simple formula, handicappers who use speed numbers don’t try to adjust them to class or speed.

You can, however, select the races you wish to develop your numbers for and then start charging them. Let’s say you’re going to develop your own way to fix these speed numbers and SFs. First you need to disable each race to claim and then download the charts. Check out each winner and compare SF’s overall pace numbers from its last three races. After 20 or so races you will begin to understand that speed and speed numbers work together and how to spot a horse that may not seem very strong, based on its SF totals, but will be surprised by its speed advantage.
