## The Physics of Angry Birds

How does physics relate to the Angry Birds game? Well, physics is about a broad field of science that deals with the nature and properties of matter and energy. It is based on seven branches which are mechanics, thermodynamics, waves and vibrations, optics, electromagnetism, relativity, and quantum mechanics. Technology focuses on movement and interaction between things. Thermodynamics is based on the study of temperature, heat and energy. Waves and motions are based on observations from sound, electromagnetic waves, x-rays, and light. Optics focuses on light, lenses, mirrors. Electromagnetism is about electricity and magnetism. Correlation is the relationship between speed, time, and mass in extreme cases. Quantum mechanics is the behavior of subatomic particles, especially electrons. Angry Birds is the most addictive app that was launched in 2009 by a guy named Rovio Entertainment in the Apple company.

The entire concept of the game was created by Jaakko Lisalo from Finland and the design was by Markus Tupperainen and Peter Urbanics. The main story is that the pigs steal the bird’s eggs causing them to become very angry and turn the wingless birds into the pig’s building to tear them down. During development, there was an outbreak of swine flu. There are many different versions of angry birds and they can be found on computers, tablets, smartphones and iPhones.

Angry birds play a role in physics because of the math of finding speed and distance. Velocity is the speed at which an object changes when it is moved from one position and describes the magnitude and direction in which the object is moving. When the bird leaves the catapult, it has a velocity at a certain angle. When it comes to speed, there are two things vertical and horizontal. The vertical component is based on the speed due to gravity which always pulls the bird down close to the Earth. The horizontal section remains constant which means there is no force to repel the bird and no friction due to wind resistance. Gravity will eventually slow the vertical velocity to zero and become negative. This means that the bird’s vertical speed will decrease from v to 0 and up. Then increase from 0 down. Distance is the total distance between two objects with motion independent of motion.

Now, there are two sections with vertical and horizontal distance. Distance travels in a straight line which means time repeats at a constant rate. To understand the vertical distance traveled, the kinematics formula is needed which is w = v + e.
