BodyPump 77 Review

BodyPump 77 is here! This release takes place in the 2nd quarter of this year at certified Les Mills gyms. The game, which targets all muscle areas in an hour, is the oldest class in the book. The question is: is this release the perfect start to summer? Or will it cast a shadow on the taps all spring?

Warm Up: Commander-Spacegliderz

Song 1 definitely inspires me and puts me in the moment. The rhythm is more satisfying as the instructor’s voice guides us through all the moves of the class. The choreography is a bit difficult (compared to 76) but it’s definitely warm and introduces BodyPump 77 in a perfect way.

Squats: Swade is my life

This Bon Jovi song remix is perfect for the classroom. The choreography goes well with the song but is not amazing by any means. 4-lows, and one squat is carried over from the BodyPump 76, and there is no stinger in the tail. So these squats are a little (just a little!) easier than last time. But I like the song so it’s fine.

Chest: DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love – Usher ft. Pitbull

The danger that Les Mills faces when implementing the top 40 song is that it will be out of date when the workout hits gyms around the world, this time it is not. This groovy tune makes me tap my feet every time and makes chest workouts my favorite. The moves are on par with those found in U2’s heyday, nothing spectacular. Instead simple movements are repeated until the end of the song with just one break, a very effective exercise.

Back: Catch Me Tonight – Manian

Track 4 is the first track that clearly deviates from the formula laid out in BodyPump 76. The choreography includes a new movement that requires the pumps to push the weights above the shoulder line 3 times, with 4 repetitions. (Darn, forget the common name given by Les Mills…)

Most people will find this song more difficult compared to the previous one but for me personally it is not that difficult. Also consider that technique is very important, do it improperly and it won’t backfire at all!

Triceps: I love it – Tokyo Haze

I hate this song! Its background (by Enrique Iglesias) is not inspiring at all and its rhythm lacks energy. The movements are more repetitive than last time and about the same weight. A simple movement with a bar, including presses and overheads, is repeated until the end.

Biceps: Diamond Eyes (boom-lay boom-lay boom) – Shinedown

This song is hard! The main combo includes 8 (!) halves and 4 full bicep curls. It’s a very heavy combo and takes everything out of the biceps. There is a break in between and a few simple movements that make a perfect recovery towards the last set including 8 halves and 8 full curls. The first two times I did this song my arms hurt the next day so the work paid dividends. Don’t like the music though.

Lunges: Only Girl in the World – Nick Skitz vs DJ Lotus

BodyPump 77 includes dynamic lunges, static lunges and squats to complete it. The song is more aimed at girls in the class, mostly I believe. The changing lungs are very fun and go well with the music; A great way to create creativity and stability. The kicker is two sets of 8 low squats; certainly the hand is full.

Shoulder: Ti Sento – Scooter

In difficulty this song compares to BodyPump’s previous releases. It starts with a set of push-ups followed by flyes (straight arms). The song marks four sets, accompanied by quick breaks in between. Overall it sounds satisfying and fits well with the music. By the time the opera starts you will feel like a hero flying outside looking for crime.

Abs: We’re talking about Americano – Yolanda be cool vs DCUP

Remember when I said that the delay between production and release can sometimes reduce the appeal of a popular song? Well song 9 of BodyPump 77 seems to be an example of that statement. I personally like it and think the choreography fits well, but some people I’ve talked to get the song from “last year” and they absolutely hate it. The fun track (no controversy here!) captures two major movements: the hover and sit-ups. The abs are definitely hot after this one.

Cooldown: One last chance – girlfriend

A simple indie pop song always works for me and it does again. It’s very similar to BodyPump’s previous cool song (Kris Allen) and this might mark the trend I’m looking for.

BodyPump 77 conveys many of the musical genres and movements found in the last quarter. A few tracks are good (chest, abs) while others go down from the previous output (triceps). Overall the release is decent but nothing special.

Rating: 7/10 – A decent release but not great by any means.
