Formation Integrity Test (FIT)
Fractional Integrity Test (FIT) is a method of testing the strength of the formation and casing shoe by increasing the Bottom Hole Pressure (BHP) to the design pressure. FIT is usually carried out to ensure that the underlying structure of the casing will not be breached while drilling the next section with high pressure downhole. Typically, local drilling engineers will determine how much test integrity testing is required and the FIT unit is typically pounds per liter.
Method of Calculating Stresses Required for Structural Integrity Testing.
Before performing a structural integrity test, you need to know the stress required for a Fractional Integrity Test. The formula below shows how to calculate the required FIT pressure.
Required Pressure for FIT (psi) = (Required FIT in ppg – Current mud weight in ppg) x 0.052 x Actual vertical depth of shoe in feet
The example below shows how to use the formula to calculate the pressure required for testing:
FIT Needed (ppg) = 14.5
Current mud density (ppg) = 9.2
True Vertical Depth of Shoe (ft) = 4000 TVD
Required pressure at FIT = (14.5-9.2) x 0.052 x 4000 = 1102 psi
Note: Acronyms are listed below;
psi = pounds per inch
ppg = pounds per pound
ft = feet
The Building Integrity Testing (FIT) procedures are as follows;
1. Drill the new formation a few feet, drill down to the top and collect formation samples to ensure the new formation is excavated and then pull the drill string from the casing shoe.
2. Close the annular preventer or pipe clamps, adjust the cement pump, and cycle through the open choke line to ensure that the surface line is completely filled with drilling fluid.
3. Stop the pump and close the choke valve.
4. Slowly pump a small amount of drilling fluid into the well with constant pump strokes and the recommended pump strokes are 5 to 10 strokes per minute. Record total pump strokes, drill pipe pressure and casing pressure. Pump until the casing pressure reaches the pressure required for the formation integrity test. Stop pumping and hold the pressure for a few minutes to ensure pressure stability.
5. Bleed the pressure and open the well. Then start recruiting.
