What ‘Fear’ Has To Do With Time Management?

Let’s say, for example, that we are walking down the street. And suddenly a big truck comes towards us with no intention of stopping. You can just sit there and think, well let’s see, maybe the driver doesn’t see me? Do we calculate the distance between you and the truck so that you can safely walk away from the accident? We certainly don’t do that…

We experience an automatic response or a feeling of alertness that makes our body move automatically to prevent danger, without us having anything to do with it. We do not think in such cases. We simply act to avoid bad things, based on our motivation.

How does it relate to time management?

Well, we have 4-5 major roadblocks associated with fear. They prevent us from the success we want, lead us to mismanagement and not getting work as a result.

Why are you doing this to yourself?

Fear is designed to protect us from dangerous things. It’s just a feeling that keeps us alive. However, many times, it starts at the most inopportune times which prevents us from getting the results we want. Poor time management leads us to disaster down the road, not being able to complete projects and tasks. If we don’t complete any tasks that are important to us to move things forward, there is no progress.

Here are five fear-related roadblocks that keep us from gaining control of our time:

1) Fear of Failure (perfection forever) – we can’t stand the idea of failure, and we make things perfect at the beginning, before starting a job, project or task. It takes a lot of time to do something simple. However, because we are afraid of failure, we do hours of research, unnecessary tweaks from the beginning. This is a huge waste.

2) Fear of Success (seeking approval) – this is always an internal conflict we face. We want to succeed, but somehow, we are afraid of a new lifestyle or way of life. It is not fair that we succeed while others suffer, so we need approval and validation in order to succeed. This wastes a lot of time, not completing your work and procrastinating on important things.

3) Fear of rejection (not to start, because others will not like it) – this corresponds to the fear of success. However, we are finding reasons why we are not starting yet. It often involves other people we love and trust, and we are faced with a dilemma between losing two friends or having a successful business. No one will love us, if we succeed.

Example: “If you want enemies, excel others; if you want friends, let others succeed.” – Charles Caleb Colton

4) Fear of Power (I’m not good) – this is the opposite of empowerment and confidence. We don’t feel good enough to take the journey and be more successful. We often feel that we need more training, or that we need more time to handle this. This causes us to procrastinate from a time management standpoint, resulting in countless hours of learning new things, but avoiding actually taking any action. Learning without doing is the cause of all failure.

5) Fear of Responsibility (a lot of responsibility, a lot of work) – we like to listen, and not get our hands dirty, take the fastest way to success. We want to have systems in place or someone else to do the work for us, without taking responsibility for our actions and mistakes. We often blame others for our mistakes, pointing fingers, instead of finding the problems within ourselves. This alone will waste a lot of time by going through a lot of arguments and drama. Time-wasting conflicts between you and your subordinates can completely destroy your business.
