Five More Things Youth Baseball Coaches Should Practice But Don’t

In my first book The Chronicles of Baseball, one of my most famous articles was “Four Things Coaches Should Practice But Don’t.”

The four things I mentioned are: Pitchers who aren’t used to pitching on the mound, catch the foul ball near the fence, players who don’t slide and practice throwing wild balls or passed balls. Reading some of the feedback I received, most of the readers were misunderstanding about my article. There should be hundreds of things that we have to train coaches, but no. I just picked four of the ones that I see coming out every year. So always have the spirit of training rather than just telling your players, here are five more things that are repeated several times by many coaches who do not train or go through them.

1) Call ended. About once every few years I see a runner go into second place and get up without calling a time or call a time and the referee doesn’t approve. A smart fielder will place his glove with the ball on the baserunner as he rises from his slide. And he gets called when he gets off base if it’s just for a moment or he thinks he has time. We need to teach our young players that calling a timeout in organized games is very different than calling a timeout on a personal pitch. Coaches should practice having their players slide on base, then call a “time out” with the coach playing the umpire. A coach should not intentionally call time out immediately after keeping the baserunner on the ground. Each player must go through this once.

It is the same situation when the batter asks for time. Coaches should practice teaching players not to leave the batter’s box until time is given by the umpire.

2) Rundowns with too many throws. This confuses me. We practice rundowns almost once a week. Many youth baseball coaches teach the runner to run back to the starting base. I take the practical approach that rundowns are a gift to the defending team and you have to get out. There is no ideal number of throws. And then, I teach my players that the ball should not be thrown more than once. I use the term “sprint mode” and teach my players that once you find a runner in this sprint mode, it’s difficult for him to stop and change directions and that’s when we take one of ours and throw only. This must be done.

3) Baserunners Stopping Early. We see it all the time. A player will hit a slow grounder and run to first base only to land directly on the base as the base is a wall so he is too slow to be called out when he runs on the base he would have hit the base. We tell our team to run to first base but how many of us take the time to practice? This is one of the easiest things to do and once you get used to it, it will stick in the player’s head. Set up a cone ten feet behind first base and have your team line up. On the command “go” they drive one at a time and run past the base to the cone. It’s simple but effective and should be run by even your best baserunners.

4) Covering the 1st Grounder to the right side. One of my problems. Did you see a youth baseball game when the ball is hit to the right side of the infield and the pitcher stays frozen on the mound? This can have the boss going gray during the day. We practice by giving each pitcher a chance to get off the mound. You measure the pitch and I’m going to throw the base between the first and second baseman. The barrel must run off the hill to cover first. The key here is to make sure the pitcher hits the first base line about 6-10 feet in front of the base and then lifts it to the base. Anyone who plays baseball must guide the first baseman with the baseball. This should be practiced with the baserunner measuring the conditions of the game.

5) Hitting high places. Every player who plays for me in our league knows that we play hard. Every player should be a skilled bunter during the season. We even practice bunting with a double-hitting baseball strategy that we can look at. We constantly change our bunt signals to make sure opponents don’t pick them up. Even with all this practice, it annoys me when a player is flagged for a bunt and on the next pitch, it’s over his shoulders and he gives it up. So now the batsman is putting himself in a hole with one hit to the ball outside the strike zone and the other team knows we are covering. Coaches need to tell these young footballers that when they are given a sign, it doesn’t mean they have to commit at all costs. We want them to cover the balls in the strike zone. This should be communicated to the players and they should practice. We take a lot of batting practice and whatever the pitching coach is, I tell them to throw balls out of the strike zone. So we practice that my players can spot balls that might break and pull their bats if the ball is out of the strike zone. Coaches should practice this.

I mentioned in my first Baseball Chronicles that practice is a place to teach and games are a place to reinforce what is taught. I don’t know about the most effective method for most young baseball players. Even if we get used to the frequency of these errors, we must always remind ourselves that these players are still children twelve years old and younger.
