An Herbal Approach to H1N1 Virus (Swine Flu)

Over the past few days, I’ve watched the media rush to tell us about a possible shortage of the H1N1 Swine Flu vaccine. We are being warned that the H1N1 virus will hit this winter on epidemic proportions. Many of us are frankly confused about how to prevent/treat ourselves and our family members. As a herbalist, I was asked my opinion on this vexing topic.

Vaccination is sometimes necessary. The elderly, people with weakened immune systems and very young children should be protected. Caregivers are needed and often not enough. Therefore, caregivers and teachers should consider vaccination. That being said, the decision to vaccinate should be weighed carefully. Are there sensible and simple ways to protect yourself and your family without vaccination, while the choice is still ours? Of course there is, and one option is to go the vegetarian route.

The use of roots as a deterrent, is about personal responsibility, responsibility to yourself and others. If you are sick, prevent others from becoming so by isolating yourself. Most employers view the H1N1 virus as a serious enough threat to encourage their employees to use their sick days when they are sick. Some have allowed employees to take days off even if you have exhausted your sick time.

Prevention in this case and all other health concerns, is the most important consideration. Especially during flu season, building your immune system should be your top concern.

Medicines that build the immune system and can be taken before feeling sick are:

Astragulus (Astragalus Membranaceus) – A powerful immune booster. The best thing to do before the cold and flu season comes is to build up the body’s resistance.

Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus Senticos) – Has anti-viral and immune-boosting properties.

Codonopsis root (Codonopis pilosulae) – Immunity and frequent infections

Schizandra berries (Schizandra chinensis) – To increase the function of the body’s immune system

Reishi Mushroom – (Ganoderma lucidum) It stimulates the immune system

All the herbs listed above can be taken as a tea or tincture during the flu season on a preventative basis.

What to do if you feel sick:

Know your body and notice the signs of illness. Everyone starts feeling sick differently; fatigue, sore throat, headache, nausea, chills, etc. The herbal method of treating fever includes all of the following: clearing toxins and excesses by increasing sweating, killing germs and reducing fever, pain, stiffness and congestion.

His is accomplished by stimulating the body’s natural immune response.

At the first symptoms of flu – diaphoretic medicine such as Osha Root (Ligusticum porteri) which can be taken, will promote sweating and help eliminate toxins. Osha Root was first used by Native Americans to treat colds, flu and upper respiratory infections. It is a powerful, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic herb. Osha tea or tincture can be taken in small doses every half hour to an hour.

If your cold symptoms become inflammatory, take an herbal antibiotic or anti-microbial such as Golden Seal (Hydrastis canadensis) or Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea) in tea or tincture for up to 7 days. Both of these are powerful plants and should be treated as such.

If you are congested, have a cough or cough – use an expectorant, astringent, and antispasmodic herb. Echinacea can disinfect and dry up phlegm. Echinacea can be a drying herb, so you should not take it if you have a dry cough. Use herbal peppermint steam (Baby Piperita) and Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus bulbs) to help with congestion. Other herbs that may help include: Yarrow (Achillea millefoliumMullein (Verbascum thapsusand Wild Cherry (Prunus serotina), Elecampane (It lacks heleniumand Thyme (Thymus vulagris).

With a sore throat – use a soothing demulcent (moisturizing herb) such as Marshmallow Root (Althaea officinalis) and Slippery Elm (Ulmus rubra). Osha can also be taken to reduce inflammation, it will reduce and anesthezie. A gargle can be made with Yarrow, Sage (Salvia officinales) and or Echinacea.

Ear Infections – Ear infections usually start in the throat and move to the inner ear through the Eustachian tube. Use an anti-microbial such as Garlic, Echinacea, Mullein or/and Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) because of pain.

For Fever use such a plant febrifuge (reduces fever) and diaphoretic (promotes sweating), such as Ginger, Boneset – to relieve aches and pains, Peppermint, flowers for the elderly, Catnip (especially for young children) and Yarrow.

Shake well and spray on surfaces, air and hands.

Above all, use common sense when you feel sick; avoid cold, raw food, dairy products, dress warmly, and get the rest your body needs. Eat more garlic in your diet, miso soup, and organic vegetable broths. Take care of yourselves and each other this flu season!
